Sesshin Settles in Supramundane

Good morning!   Early morning is cool, especially after sitting, even in summer. We have been in sesshin. Sesshin is touching and embracing the heart, core. Sitting, stilling karma, settling in nirvana and bodhi, awakening. Touching the core is … Continue reading

Complete Conqueror

Good morning!   Suddenly the air turned cool, almost chilly, as if out of the hot dry weather the height of autumn has already arrived, though abnormal climate incidents – typhoon, flooding, drought, etc. – rage in other places. Soon we will be able to see the renowned full moon shining in the clear sky. We say “autumn of high sky with horses fattening,” because of the dry air. The Sino-Japanese character for aki (autumn, 秋) shows plants with fire(禾+火).   Just a couple of days of dry hot weather without watering has caused plants with shallow roots or a poor root system to die. Dry weather and a busy schedule without watering made me lose germination of sown seeds and sprouted veggies. With the irrigation system, however, I am harvesting veggies and fruits – sometimes a tiny fig or pears, but very sweet. I found a lot of radishes, self seeding and propagating naturally unlike failing artificial sowing and transplanting.   I have been posting Dogen’s Doei, Poems in the Way, which I shared with friends in a couple of groups for peace, etc. The poems received a good reception with “Beautiful!” “I’ve never thought of waka, Japanese poems, having such profound impact.” The Doei’s first poem was on Dogen parting with his disciples and this world, followed by one on the renowned moon, composed just a fortnight before his death. His last verse left to the world is:   Illuminating the First Heaven for fifty four years, (I) suddenly springing up, break through The Great Thousand (Worlds). IIh! Entire body, seeking nothing, falls into the Yellow Spring (Nadir) alive.   He lived constantly illuminating the First Heaven, the Buddha World, the Supramundane Realm, with prime pristine peace and prognosis like the full moon in the autumn sky. He lived it breaking through the Great Thousand Worlds dead, seeking nothing, and he died alive, seeing all. He saw and severed me-ism, materialism, and militarism of all kinds in all places rooted in delusion, desire, and divisiveness. … Continue reading

Buddha Heart

Good morning!   Congratulations on your coming here to practice Zazen just after your overnight work. Usually, we would like to go to bed as soon as we finish such work. However, you came and sat through sittings and service. So, now you are refreshed, recreated, and rejuvenated by upright, solid, and serene sitting with deep breathing. The vital function of deep breathing replaces the old air and blood with new fresh air and blood, pumping pure blood, delivering to every part of the body and brain, making metabolism the best, and the separated small self and world wholly wholesome – from a bubble-like being to an ocean-like organism. This is the Buddha world, awakened world.   Only when we completely sit and stop all karmas, can we witness it. Otherwise we always remain caught in the body sense and sensation, in the “body-existing view” (sak-kāya ditṭthi, sat-kāya dṛṣṭi, ushhinken, 有身見). Thus, we become tired, get sick, fearful of death, etc., and much troubled by it. It is the karma-conditioned perception and conception, which disappear in solid serene sitting in the Buddha Mind Seal as substanceless (suñña, śūnya) not worrying about falling down, hitting against, etc., coming back to the original state before the origination of perceptions, conceptions, emotions, and volitions. This is the very way to stop karma and enter into the Truth Domain (Dharma Dhātu).   Now, we have a lot of green around us. Because of the sun melting the snow and ice into water which permeates throughout the world – earth, air, plants, and animals. Water, essence of life, fresh air, and the sun light and warmth, the source of life, gives us a kind of spring season scene full of abundant life. We are permeated by light and warmth, soaked with moisture, and especially fresh air. So, we become one with space, which is said to be eternal along with only nirvana, even though all things change. So, we also become one with the world of nirvana, windless of karmas, as modern sciences revealed – space sparse with simple seemly substance or just a field.   We go back to the original state and find that our perceptions, conceptions, etc. are only our mental creations. The uncreated state (a-sankhata, a-samskṛta) is nirvana. I forwarded an introduction of a NHK program, “Darwin’s Coming” in Japanese, “Grand Nature Land” in English, to our e-list last night. The latest feature was the “Revival Project of Birds Migration in Italy. The first birds to start were gray geese (Anser Anser). The project created Cona Island Natural Preservation Park in northern Italy ten years ago, preserving now 200 water birds species from the … Continue reading

Supramundane Spring and Singing

Good evening!   Now we can see daffodils blooming everywhere. The news from Japan reported cherry blossoms blooming ten days earlier than usual time due to warm weather in March. Flowers bloom in the same way year after year, but humans change year after year. Individual karmas and shared karmas effect things differently.   When we come and sit here, we can see beautiful flowers and smell good  incense, and even witness supramundane spring of flowers blossoming on withered trees and withered tree’s dragon singing beyond the mundane realms and karma kens. So enjoy nirvana without wind of karmas in beatitude beyond the mundane.   3/19/13   Note: The supramundane spring of lowers blossoming on withered trees (枯木花開劫外春: koboku-kakai kougai-no haru) and the withered tree’s dragon singing (枯木龍吟: koboku-ryūgin) are witnessed beyond the mundane realm.

Supramundane Sitting

Good morning!   Now we have spring rain moistening the air, wetting the ground, giving life to plants, animals, and everything. We used to say, “It’s spring rain: let’s go walking in the rain.” After the radiation rain started, we could not so easily suggest going into the rain, and we must even keep inside our houses.   This morning I watched a special TV program from Japan about the Great East Japan Earthquake, with the tsunami and nuclear disaster. Today’s special was the fifteenth of the series, featuring Katsurao (葛尾) village, with more than a thousand people at the 20km border from the nuclear plants.   The villagers had to leave their homes after the nuclear plant explosions, with the government extending evacuation zones from 5km to 10km to 20km, etc. They left their village before the government’s evacuation order, but the farmers had to remain behind in order to take care of their cattle.   One farmer who let his cattle graze freely outside decided to put them to a quick death rather than let them starve slowly. He tied them up without access to water. When he returned home after one month, he found all had died. One got freed and tried to reach the drinking place, but could not.   Maybe we are like them, with our thirst. Gotama (Best Cow) Siddhatta (Obtaining Objective) wanted to save all beings from sufferings: birth, aging, sickness, and death. This diagram of the Twelvefold Dependent Origination shows how thirst (tańhā/tṛṣņā) with delusion leads to actions/appropriations and suffering (called sandō).   All living beings feel thirst for water, food, etc., trying to do anything for their survival. Appropriation of body/mind or identification as an American, etc., makes us to go through birth and death, transmigrating through all kinds of ways as hungry ghosts, fighting devils, etc, exploiting and exterminating.   Possession is possessedness. Whatever we possess, we are possessed by it – self, state, species, civilization, and so forth. Possessions become the triple poisons of delusion, desire, and divisiveness, and these then make the triple … Continue reading

Sitting and Seeing Mountain Peaks

Good evening!   I heard from Japan that the plum flowers at Kairaku-en, Co-enjoying-garden, are now in full bloom, though late due to the deep cold snow season.   Dogen loved plum flowers blooming in the chill with strong scent. He said that we have the time to see all the peaks.   For that we must strive step by step in continuous concentrated effort, free from all other concerns, and fully, with our total power.   Then we can see all the peaks as if sitting alone at the peak of the Great Courageous One, the Buddha, enjoying the scent of amrita, immortality.   3/15/13   Note: A monk asked Hyakujo (Bai-zhang:百丈), “What is an unusual thing?” Hyakujo said, “Sitting alone at the peak of the Great Courageous One (大雄).”   Hyakujo Ekai (百丈懐海:Baizhan Huaihai) lived at the peak of Mt. Hyakujo (hundred feet) or Mt. Great Hero/Great Courageous One (大雄), thus … Continue reading
