True Treasure

Good morning! We are having rainy season like days recently. So, we have abundant lush greenery and beautiful flowers. A recent “Meet the Legend” program on TV Japan featured a biologist who became an environmentalist, heading an organization. He said, “Animals struggle for survival, even killing others. Humans are exceptional among living beings in that they change the natural world. Human actions cause natural world reactions. Then, humans react. Thus, environmental problems arise. We must solve this spiral problem.”   Humans have developed their heads and hands, sciences and technologies, changing the world to the sixth mass extinction with global warming, nuclear disaster, etc. These problems arise from human karmas driven by the triple poisons of craving, hatred, and delusion, which have originated from karmas. The artificial pyramidal civilization craving for matter and power, bought by money, must be changed to the natural cyclical culture of cultivating mind and life, brought by awakening in nirvana, windless of karma conditioning.   Recently in our class we came across this verse in the Dhammapada, on the fragrance of morality:    Sandal, tagara, lotus, or even jasmine, of these kinds of fragrance, the fragrance of morality is the highest.                                       … Continue reading

Triple Treasures

Good morning! Yesterday a big telecommunication company serviceman came to fix my very slow Internet connection problem. He said it was a simple mistake to put the net gear too far from the modem. He also fixed the poor function of my computer to get better connections (handshakes) with internet launchers.   Our life is like this, with a simple, but salient, mistake of having the net gear (extender, Dharma) too far from the modem of the Awakened One (Buddha). We must fix the poor function of individual computing systems to get better connections (handshakes) with the Internet (Indra-net) launchers.   The Buddha (supra-mundane) mode is completely new and good (wholly wholesome), compared to the old and poor one (karma kinesis). The Dharma is the net gear (extender) of unconditioned peace (nirvana) and unsurpassed awakening (bodhi), where all systems are as clear crystals in the Sangha-net.   The karma mode is at a dead end, with the global problematique of human global pyramidal system; global, individual, social, and ecological problems; mass extinction caused by the triple poisons. The solution lies in the triple learning, sīla,  samādhi, and prajñā, of the triple treasures or refuges.   12/14/14

Sitting in Stillness, Silence, and Serenity

Good morning!   Dogen said, “When we walk through mist, we become unwittingly wet.” I got up without my alarm clock.   When we make it a rule to wake up or work out something at a certain time, our body clocks ring.   I have been trying to make our safety light, detecting motion, not turn on, but it is difficult to do so. Just a slight movement brings it on.   That is why silence is golden. Sitting is golden. It brings on the triple treasures for anyone in stillness, silence, and serenity.   1/18/13
