Means and Ends

Good morning!   We can enjoy relatively good weather surrounded by flowers inside and out with birds’ singing and butterflies’ visiting, while heat waves, wild fires, droughts, etc. are at other places. It is especially good to sit and serve for the buddhas and bodhisattvas together with old-timers, mid-timers, and new-timers, while the world stray and seek matters and powers in disasters.   We offer flowers to the Buddhas, which was the origin of Ikebana (flower arrangement, lit. letting flowers live). I ordered three books on Ikebana for us, two of which seem not quite good for offering the Buddhas. Zen in the Art of  Flower Arrangement by Gustie Herrrigel, consort of Eugen Herrigel who wrote Zen in the Art of Archery, is good to learn its way.   The book says, “Of the ten virtues, the first requisite is union with the flower’s heart (hana-no-kokoro) and the ‘universal heart…by listening to the flower heart and taking into his own heart, he communicates freely…a current of love runs from the flower heart to the human heart, to the universal heart and back again.” We must become flowers’ hearts in the field and the life itself.   I forwarded the video info of the presentations and the presenters’ panel discussion commemorating the 40th anniversary of the Club of Rome’s Limit to Growth at Smithsonian Institution to the Global System Ethic elist, etc. The presenters talked a bout our overshoot of the mass production, consumption, the disasters due to the climate change, mass extinctions, etc.   Lester Brown said that if something like the heat wave that happened in Russia with deaths and fires last year took place in Chicago the consequences would be the global devastation and recommended his Plan B, replacing the business as usual of Plan A. They said that we must redefine ‘security’ from more dangerous militarism … Continue reading

Good morning!   We have abundant beautiful flowers inside and out.  I worked in my garden yesterday enjoying flowers blooming and fruits borne, birds and butterflies – even monarch butterflies. I was amazed at plants growing so fast and flourishing and new things – after more than two decades a hydrangea bloomed, which I thought only to enjoy its patterned leaves.  An apple tree, though dwarf, is growing so big and now blooming and bearing fruit.  An inch thick grape tree is now bearing  fruit densely on a hundred square feet.   This morning I got an email from Teibi, who planted a weeping cherry tree and is going to enjoy its blossoming.  I have a weeping cherry here and at my house with other cherry trees. We missed cherry blossom viewing this spring, but maybe next year.  Today’s Tricycle message was about the pursuit of happiness.  It said that all want happiness but Buddhism tells about suffering so that we may know how to pursue happiness. We must not mistake true happiness from false.   We have been reading Dogen’s Yūji (有時), Possessing Time. We must find the opportune time for the right purpose and good result, and make our careers wholly wholesome.  So, Dogen recommended that we put our whole power in the Way Cycle of aspiration, cultivation, awakening, and unconditioned peace. Last time I talked about the paradigm shift from civilization to cultivation. Civilization is urbanization with city or citadel walls, discriminating inside and out.  It is said, “Before civilization were forests. After civilization are no forests.”   Civilization with its one-directional pyramidal system fights for limited matter and power, and thus forces the five calamities of delusion, bondage, discrimination, exploitation, and extermination. It can not thrive and survive going against the Dharma of Dependent Origination. Cultivation with its multi-dimensional Indra- net system shares a culture of limitless heart and life in truth, goodness, and beauty; and thus strives for the fivefold bliss of awakening, freedom, equality, love, and peace.   Now we must see what kind and what way we are pursuing happiness. True happiness is not in the quantity of matter and power; and much less in selfish, sinful, fighting for them; but in quality of truth, goodness, and beauty – much more in selfless, holy (wholly wholesome) sharing of them.  The more and harder we seek and struggle for matter and power, the severer and stronger we stray and suffer. The harder and more we strive and share in heart and life, the healthier and happier we enjoy and enjoin with all always. … Continue reading

Paradigm Shift from Civilization to Cultivation

Good morning!   Today, July 7, is Tanabata (七夕), celebrated in the East as the day of the Weaver Princess (Vega) and the Cow-herder Prince (Altair) meet across  Ama-no-gawa (天の 川: Heaven River: Milky Way) and people hope their wishes, written on paper strips hung on bamboo trees, are realized. The day is one of the five Sekkus (節句), distinct marks on the calendar like joints on stalks of bamboo; the others are January 1 (New Year’s Day), March 3 (Peach, now Girls’ Day), May 5 (Iris, now Boys’ Day), September 9 (Mum Day). The last one is called Chōyō (重陽): Double Positive or Sun, which falls on the Sun shining forth that formed the solar system according to the Cosmic Calender (with the Big Bang at the start of the New Year’s Day and the present moment at the end of December 31st). The formation of the Milky Way falls on May Day. So far our planet Earth is the only one with water and life going around the sun in a position appropriate for cycling seasons and system flows. … Continue reading
