Seed Sowing Season
Good morning! We can still see the full moon of the spring equinox. The small song (小唄) of Gion sings, “The moon is in the mist at Higashiyama, East Mountain,…” Spring snow seeps into the air and the earth making mist and moistened ground. So, this is the good time to sow seeds of spring season, pulling down broken branches, pulling out plants and putting them into grounds. The famous opening passage of the Tale of Heike tells, “The bell sound of Gion Monastery sends the sound of all created things being impermanent.” This is the good time to sow seeds of saving sentient beings, cultivating the fertile ground of the awakened way and world, weeding and watering, so that we may witness unconditioned peace and unsurpassed awakening. 3/29/13 Note: Gion (祇園) is the famous “Flower Town” in Kyoto named after the Jeta Vana, Grove (Monastery), donated to the Buddha by Anāthapindada, Food Feeder for the Deprived, first in exchange for the equal area of coins to the ground, but then given by the Prince Jeta, who recognized the sincere wish of him. When I visited there, there were beautiful flowers blossoming and many butterflies flying … Continue reading

Good evening! Just before I came here, I watched the news from Japan, which reported on a father who lost all six of his family members in the Tsunami two years ago. Bringing photos of his family, he attended the local primary school graduation ceremony to receive his youngest daughter’s graduation diploma. School graduation ceremonies are taking place all over Japan now. We say graduation rather than commencement, because students are graduating from many years of studious studies with “the light of fireflies and that of the windows’ snow,” as the Japanese song set to the tuen of the Auld Lang Syne says. Auld Lang Syne in Japan is the farewell song at schools and ships’ departures, etc. … Continue reading
Maintaining Mirror Moon Mind
Good morning! Because of the overcast sky we couldn’t see the full moon late last night and early this morning. But, beyond the clouds and behind the apparent changing phases of the moon, there is always the full moon – the Buddha mind with unconditioned peace and unsurpassed awakening. The unseasonable spring snow caused broken branches, even trunks truncated, and trees tumbling down with heavy wet snow. So, we must take care of them before they break and tumble down. We need dharma care and karma cure through the cultivation and verification of the Buddha mind. Like the king Mirror, seeing the whole picture of the elephant, we must see the whole picture and the whole process to the end, taking care and providing cure. We must maintain sitting calm and clear, stop karmas, settle steadfast and serene in ultimate truth and unconditioned peace, and see and save all. 3/28/13
Bright Moon, Buddha Mind
Good evening! It is a little overcast, but we hope we can see the full moon, which represents the Buddha mind, the round, beautiful, bright moon. On the ground we still see some stored snow, but daffodils are reblooming and forsythias are just budding. The Buddha mind is free from stored-snow-like stored consciousness of karma, and the full-moon-like full function of dharma, beyond the apparent changing phases, functioning like the great round mirror in the great round ball of the clear crystal world. Dogen said, “Awakening is not attained by the mind, but by the body.” It means that we must put our whole beings, body and brain, and the whole world, the true body, into free, full function, neither bubble-begotten nor boundary-bound, neither biased nor unbalanced. The Buddha mind is “the exquisite mind of nirvana storing the right dharma eye” (shōbōgenzō-nehanmyōshin: 正法眼蔵涅槃妙心). That is why we must sit solid, still, and serene, stop our karmas, see the dharmas, and serve and save all beings in the unified wholly wholesome world. 3/27/13
Mind Mirror Moon
Good morning! We could see the beautiful bright full moon this morning. Seven hundred sixty years ago, Dogen made the following poem just before passing away: Even in the autumn, when I’d expect to see it again, I could not have slept With the moon of tonight. He made the following poem also, meaning that his poems were really on the Buddha mind and its ways and worlds: In the spring wind My words were strewn – People may consider Them as poems on flowers. Even though we can seldom see the full moon in the clear sky, we can see the Buddha mind always, if only we sit in this Buddha mind seal. We hope we can see the beautiful brilliant full moon tonight again in the clear calm spring sky with our Buddha mind seals. 3/27/13
Cultivation and Verification
Good evening! We had heavy snow at the spring equinox. Two days later snow on tall trees has gone as they enjoy the spring sunshine. The ground grass, however, is still under the stored snow. So too lotus flowers enjoy the sunlight, storing its fruit inside themselves when they are above muddy water. When they are in mud or muddy water, they can not do so. We usually have heavy storage of karmas. Now in still serene sitting our karmas disappear and we enjoy the spring sunlight. Our daily duties, however, are still under the stored consciousness. Continuous cultivation allows us to enjoy unconditioned peace and amrita, the ambrosia of immortality, verifying its fruit inside ourselves. When well cultivated, we can always be so. 3/26/13 Daffodils Surviving Stored Snow for Spring Sunshine: picture taken by Rick Fisher
Witness Wonderful Way and World
Good morning! On the way here I listened to an NPR program about solitude and separation and how to solve such problems. It advised answering phone calls and meeting friends. When we pick up the phone, it is often a robocall. We may meet friends and make more foes. Essentially our small separated selves make small separated worlds. So, we need to stop it by solid serene sitting and sustained steadfast sesshin. Then, we wake up and witness the wonderful way and world, which makes it worthwhile being born as humans. We can enjoy limitless, beautiful world, tasting awakening and amrita, ambrosia of immortality. Thus, we can find and foster the holy home and host. 3/26/13

Holy Host Home
Good evening! The equinox is called higan (彼岸), the other shore, and it is compared to equanimity, nirvana, holy oneness. In the holy oneness, all things are one – our minds and worlds, holy host and home, the triple magnanimous, mature, and mudita (joyful) minds, and their holy truth, goodness, and beauty. So, the truth of the equinox spring sphere has melted even the heavy spring snow greatly and quickly. The goodness of the Bodhisattva’s beneficial mind has made a passage through the still lingering snow. The beauty of the incense burner ash has arisen joy and even beatitude. The holy host and home come from the Bodhisattva way – host and guest in holy oneness, unlike emperor and minister, much less master and slave, separated. They became the cultivation and verification of the culture of all the “ways” (dō: 道) – tea way, garden way, calligraphy way, etc. The tea way’s four mottoes of harmony, respect, purity, and serenity (wa-kei-sei-jaku: 和敬清寂) come from the Bodhisattvas’ Brahma-vihāra, or limitlessness of friendship, compassion, joy, and equanimity – the exquisite mind of nirvana storing the right dharma eye (shōbōgenzō-nehanmyōshin: 正法眼蔵涅槃妙心). This solid and serene sitting and sustained steadfast sesshin are the cultivation and verification of holy host and home, actualizing and appreciating unconditioned peace and unsurpassed awakening, like the spring sphere meeting and melting spring snow for free and full function. 3/25/13 Homey Holy Host Home, picture taken by Erin when snowflakes started … Continue reading

Snow-dharma
Good morning! We now have snow falling and accumulating. Children are called the “children of wind” (kaze-no ko: 風の子), so they go outdoors and play even with the wind and chill. When they have snow they make snowmen. We call them yuki-daruma (雪だるま), snow-dharma, because they look like Bodhidharma with all limbs assembled, mouth closed, and white-clad. Let us make yuki-darumas here now, enjoying limitless snowflake worlds and limitless life. 3/24/13 (family sitting)
