Good morning! The polar vortex is causing extreme cold weather with snow. Fortunately it is without snow today. Our sitting is like today, clear and cool without difficulty and danger of coverings and cloudiness. The equator vortex causes hurricanes, El Niños, etc., and in between these vortexes we have typhoon, tornadoes, etc. Our ordinary life has karma vortexes causing stormy skies and snowy streets. The Buddha taught the Four Holy Truths and the Eightfold Holy Way at his first Dharma Wheel turning. At the end of his career, he made sure that the Four Holy Truths were understood, and he gave the Eightfold Great Person’s Wakefulness. The Eightfold Holy Way are the introduction of principle to anyone to live the Awakened Way, and the Eightfold Great Person’s Wakefulness is the conclusion of practice of great persons to abide by in the Awakened Way. Dogen intended his recompilation of his Storage of the True Dharma Eyes to consist of 100 volumes, but he had to stop it at the twelfth volume, reiterating the Eightfold Great Person’s Wakefulness as his last words. He lamented that only one or two persons out of a thousand learners know of them and stressed that without knowing and practicing them none can be said to be the genuine disciples of the Buddha. He said that the Eightfold Great Person’s Wakefulness is the True Dharma Eye Stored in the Exquisite Heart of Nirvana and that by learning, attaining, and delivering them one becomes awakened as Shakya-muni Buddha. The first is “small or no desire” (appiccha). The Buddha taught that craving (taṅhā) is the cause of suffering and its cessation is nirvana, which gives unsurpassed awakening to assure one in Nirvana-dhātu and Dharma-dhātu (root/domain). The second one is “satisfaction” (santuṭṭhi) or contentment. Happiness consists in contentment. One is rich and happy even lying in the streets, possessing nothing. … Continue reading

Unlimited Views: Unlimited Values
Good morning! We can still see the bright round moon high in the clear, cool, wintry sky. We had a clear calm world to drive through. Sitting like great old sequoias, we have the serene, still, single world. Heavy snow falling and piling makes even going out difficult, and it’s much more difficult and dangerous driving through a snow storm with the windshield not well wiped by frozen wipers. Limited views and values make all limited. The Four Perverted Views of permanence, pleasure, self, and purity are against impermanence, suffering, no-self, and impurity in Dependent Origination Dharma and karma. Unlimited views are limitless values with holy truth, beauty, and goodness. This can make us shift the paradigm from ego (bubble) to eco (ocean), Dharma-dhātu, saving the world from destruction and demise. 1/19/14 Note: 1. Perverted Views or Inverted Views (vi-pari-ita, means un-pervaded, dis-integrated, prefix vi: separation, prefix pari: perfection or perimeter, ita: gone or reached, thus pari-ita: surrounded, pervaded, integrated, integral) are listed as Two (sentients and environment), Three (minds, views, and ideas), and Four (as above), seeing them not right or holy (wholly wholesome in wider perspective), but inverted or perverted. 2. Cp. The Four Dharma Marks of impermanence, suffering, no-self, and nirvana (in place of “impurity” in the above list coming from karma, to be replace by Dharma through cultivation in the Awakened Way). … Continue reading
Clear Calm Complete Cosmos
Good evening! High in the sky we can see the bright beautiful moon. The clear calm full moon represents the Buddha heart/mind. It seems to appear only once a month, but it is always there, if we see it in the right way. Far in the sky we can see the brilliant bountiful sun. It goes around in the Milky Way Galaxy. The earth goes around the sun. The moon goes around the earth. Our life goes around them and farther in space and time. Please enjoy the clear calm complete moon and appreciate the timeless truth and harmony penetrating through and going around throughout the universe. Settle in sitting and see the clear calm complete cosmos beyond small sights. 1/14/14

Samsara Suffering or Amrita Ambrosia
Good morning! We have a nice day today with the warmer Sun and almost without snow! This Sunday and last Sunday have “the difference of clouds and mud.” Even clouds would make rain melting snow rather than snow mounting snow. The roads are dry and without the danger of cars colliding out of control. Last Sunday the local roads and highways were several inches deep in snow without being plowed. So, it was very difficult and dangerous to drive without clear vision due to the ice-coated wipers not wiping well. Cars and trucks tried to maneuver or pass through piled snow covering the lane lines. In the cold weather and world we tend to move through severe states without clear vision, a cloudy shield making dangerous maneuvering. The Buddha, seeing deep laya (layers of karma) like the Himalayas’ snow-storage (hima-ālaya), was rather reluctant to come out into such a world with its Triple Poisons. In the warmer weather and world we can see and drive through the familiar and friendly world with intimate feeling and safe sailing. The Buddha saw some lotus flowers blooming above and untouched by muddy water and decided to come out into the world to save it from destruction. A cold world or society and a warm world and society are made by nature and nurtured by people. Depending on different temperatures and temperaments we experience hardship or happiness, as in mundane and supramundane realms with different seasons and senses in the same place. Even though it is easier to see and drive through a warm world, we have to strive and suffer through some stresses and suffering. “Coming home and sitting in comfort” is totally safe and satisfying. “Come and see” nirvana and bodhi beyond samsara suffering, tasting amrita, ambrosia of immortality. 1/12/14 … Continue reading

From Ego-karma (Ego-maker: Ego-conceit) to Dharma-dhātu
Good morning! The first Sunday of the year turned out to be a Snow-day or, rather, Storm-day, causing thousands of flight cancellations, car accidents, blackouts, etc. As global warming advances, the atmosphere can contain more moisture, which makes more turbulence in the air, storms, hurricanes, tornadoes, flooding, droughts, wildfire, extreme weather, etc. Humans are causing the Sixth Mass Extinction, polluting air, water, earth, etc., destroying habitats, environments, species, etc., devastating individuals, societies, and life systems, etc. We must make a paradigm shift from Ego to Eco, from Sin (Separation) to Holiness (Wholesome Whole), from artificial Pyramidal System to natural Cyclical System. Ego and its Economy are within and draw their life from Ecology, not the other way around, like a bubble, foam from the ocean. Ego-maker (aham-kāra, ego conceit) is karma, creating the Triple Poisons of delusion, craving, and anger and the Triple Maladies of me-ism, materialism, and militarism (enslaved by them and all by money-ism), constructing an artificial unidirectional Pyramidal System. Sitting and stopping karmas clarify this and confer solutions to the problems of the Ego Economy of Craving and Greed, shifting to an Egoless Economy of Contentment and Gift, contributing to the Triple Learning of sīla, samādhi, and prajñā (morality, concentration, and prognosis), contributing to the Triple Treasures of awakened ones, truth (Dharma), and true community. Sitting still and serene endows anyone with peace and truth (awakening and nirvana) in contentment and the gift of all in Dependent Origination (on … Continue reading

Dream in Dream
What was your first dream this year? For Japanese people, auspicious dreams are said to be Mt. Fuji, a hawk, an eggplant, and a funeral ceremony. Mt. Fuji is the most beloved beautiful mountain, sitting solid and serene, standing alone in a streaming line out of the plain. A hawk soars free and far high in the heavens, able anytime to swiftly sweep down to the domain as it likes. An eggplant is an elegant delicacy, but discouraged for brides to eat, probably suggesting birth, especially if a funeral is considered. A funeral is considered ominous and even avoided to think about, but auspicious, if it brings one to awaken to dream life and realize limitless life. Dreams express our concerns, present and past, and relate to our dreams, small and great, for our future, private and public in both kinds of dreams. 1/3/14 From http://fujisan.ne.jp/fugaku/

One with World
Good morning! When we get out into the snow world with the five degree air temperature, we become one with it. When we climb a mountain, we become one with it, surrounded by the air and environment. When we walk up the Awakened Way mountain, we become one with it, with the air and environment of unconditioned peace and unsurpassed awakening. 1/3/14
