Stopping, Surpassing Samsara Suffering

Good morning!   It is a beautiful autumn Sunday morning with sittings and service, the sounds of birds flapping and flying. It is the best season, just after equinox with equal day and night, a cool and clear atmosphere.   Yesterday I posted Dogen’s poem on one mind treading on the Six Paths or transmigrating through them –hell beings path/way/passage/destiny/career, etc. at our website:   1. Hell being path/destiny (niraya-gati) 2. Beastly being path/destiny (tiracchānayoni-gati) 3. Ghostly being path/destiny (pittivisaya-gati) 4. Devilish being path/destiny (asura-gati) 5. Human being path/destiny (manussa-gati) 6. Celestial being path/destiny (deva-gati)   Because of our karmas, we appropriate and identify the body as “I” and act as (if) “an independent, eternal being.” This is the common convention, to get into self- centeredness and self-assertion, creating the triple poisons.   This is the fundamental delusion or nescience (non-witness of nirvana/bodhi, unconditioned peace/unsurpassed awakening), evolved by karmas (actions, habits, heredity, etc., even called the selfish gene) for desire/divisiveness.   The triple poisons lead to the Six Paths with limitless varieties, which is called samsara, and involves suffering due to impermanence (no self-same) and dissatisfaction (no self-sovereign) of dependently originated phenomena.   This has been the case for all beings in all places and at all times, because they are karma heirs, karma relatives, karma machines, in short, karma slaves, not knowing how and thus not acting to put an end to such state.   The Buddha could know and act the right way to solve such a slave state in samsara suffering for the first time in the history of living beings. He sat, stopped karmas, saw the dharma of dependent origination and solved suchness.   He solved the problem of nature and nurture, which Dr. Suzuki called the law of heredity and the law of ability, from the very root of life with body, mind, and the world in the dharma of dependent origination. … Continue reading →

Spring Sitting

Good morning!   We say, “A moment of a spring evening is worth a thousand pieces of gold.” A spring morning in sitting and stopping karma winds is priceless, devoid of delusion deceased (gari-gari-mōja, 我利我利亡者), dead demons, and deadly devils as in the daytime dealing.   Here is the significance of cultivation and verification. Only practice makes perfect paths, persons, and places. The taste of amrita, ambrosia of immortality, is in actually acting and achieving it here and now.   3/12/13   Note: Delusion deceased (gari-gari-mōja, 我利我利亡者, lit. Self-interest, self-interest deceased) means the one who is deluded by “self,” and possessed by the self-interest and become living dead, not living free and fully with all beings – wholly wholesome living. In the daytime dealing with other humans we are drawn into this state of self- interest dead or deadly dangers, which we avoid in the early morning natural world only with beautiful birds’ singing and bunnies’ scurrying.

Diverse Degrees and Differences

Good evening!   The ice on our pond has melted, but it will take some time for the fish to wake up from hibernation and fully and freely function there.   Even when functioning fully and freely, they cannot experience human life. Even we humans cannot fully understand other cultures and cultivations.   Humans cannot really witness the Buddha’s world. We can understand Dogen’s way world only to the degree that we have cultivated and verified.   The Buddha held some leaves on his palm and said, “This much I have said, but what I have not said is like the leaves in this jungle by comparison.”   We should not think that we have attained Buddha’s world, unless we live Buddha’s ways. There are diverse degrees and differences among them.   3/7/13

Sit, See, Share, Serve, Save Sentients!

Good evening!   We have been having snow falling. So, some people might have been afraid of their dangerous driving and stopped coming here to sit and see its merits.   When we do doan duties or attend the Dharma study class, you sit and share the Awakening, Awakened Dharma, serve and save all Awakened Sanghas.   There is no other ways to serve and save all beings without sitting, sharing the Awakened Way and World – it depends on one’s own practice and attainment.   We must catch all the opportunities to practice Zazen, the Buddha-mind Seal, cultivate and verify the awakening mind and awakened world.   2/28/13
