Return to Restart

Good morning!

The full moon has quickly changed into the half moon. Now we have a nice bright Sunday. In a few days we will have the winter solstice, when the night is the longest and our distance to the sun the farthest. But it takes some time for earth, water, and air to cool down further. Nature, however, will bring us spring with springing flora and fauna.

Nature is now in the troubles due to human activities. Maybe our situation is like the winter solstice, at the farthest from the bright sun and the longest of nights. People are now conscious about our problems. The occupy movements are now world wide with the catch phrase of 99% vs. 1%, succinctly stipulating our pyramidal power system.

It will take some time to really spread among people, even including the 1%. Only when we know this can we change our total system – paradigm shift. Hopefully we can change our global life system before we destroy it. Basically it is due to the three poisons of our delusion, greed, and anger, having developed into me-ism, materialism, and militarism.

So we are having egoistic nuclear meltdown, economic meltdown, and ecological meltdown. The Buddha told us to “mentally orient to the source” (yoniso manasi-kâra). We need to return to the source and see what the problem really is. I’m afraid the occupy movement has really yet to return to the source, our own deep-seated karma problem.

I had my email server problem the day before yesterday. I contacted AT&T, etc., but could not really get the problem fixed. I asked my son, who told me to restart or refresh. I clicked the restart button and could return to the clear screen to read all mails. I, however, experienced more glitches, showing only the blue screen – blue-out!

Once we have our karma glitch, we must restart again and again. Dogen said,

To learn the awakened way is to learn the self. To learn the self is to forget the self. To forget the self is to be verified by all dharmas. To be verified by all dharmas is to drop off the body and mind of the self and of other. The trace of awakening is extinct and at rest. The traceless awakening must further on and on.

He also said, “Cultivation and verification of all dharmas by carrying the self around is delusion. Cultivation and verification of the self by all dharmas coming forward is awakening.”  Only by dropping off body and mind can we return to the source. We must restart constantly and continuously. We must let others drop off their bodies and minds.

Unless the majority changes, we can’t change our world. It is very difficult to change all., However, at least we can restart our life day by day, moment by moment to witness nirvana and awakening, tasting amrita, ambrosia of immortality. This is the true treasure anyone can attain. Please enjoy them like the brilliant sun and the bright moon.
