Store-consciousness Is Salient Starting Stand
Good evening! Now we have brighter and warmer days. The spring sphere gives plants and animals freer and fuller function in their life with more light and warmth. The snow sphere, like Hima-ālaya (Snow-stored), goes against such a way. Storehouse-consciousness inside and out makes us less free, full, bright, and warm. To counter such a severe situation, we must strive hard like making fire by rubbing wood sticks with continuous and concentrated effort. Storehouse-consciousness (ālaya-vijñāna) is the salient starting stand of our life, so we need to transform it to brighter, warmer, fuller, and freer function. 3/14/13 Note: The eighth consciousness, being the substratum or ‘storehouse’ consciousness (core of the brains and base of communities), controls the seventh consciousness (mano-vijñāna, mind-consciousness), the sixth (manas, mind) and the five former consciousnesses (of eyes, ears, nose, tongue, body). The fundamental base shift of it to the great mirror consciousness changes them to equality consciousness, subtlty- observing consciousness, and duty-fulfilling consciousnesses respectively.
Cultivation Culture
Good morning! Flowers in spring, Cuckoo in summer, The moon in autumn, Snow in winter, Clear and cool. This is Dogen’s poem titled the original face or original nature. We can “come and see” such culture in holy truth, goodness, and beauty continuously, if we can cultivate constantly and concentratedly. If we cultivate ourselves with the triple learnings of sīla, samādhi, and prajñā (backbone or morality, serene solid state or concentration, insight or prognosis), we can verify the triple treasures of awakening, awakened truth, true community. 3/13/13
Spring Sitting
Good morning! We say, “A moment of a spring evening is worth a thousand pieces of gold.” A spring morning in sitting and stopping karma winds is priceless, devoid of delusion deceased (gari-gari-mōja, 我利我利亡者), dead demons, and deadly devils as in the daytime dealing. Here is the significance of cultivation and verification. Only practice makes perfect paths, persons, and places. The taste of amrita, ambrosia of immortality, is in actually acting and achieving it here and now. 3/12/13 Note: Delusion deceased (gari-gari-mōja, 我利我利亡者, lit. Self-interest, self-interest deceased) means the one who is deluded by “self,” and possessed by the self-interest and become living dead, not living free and fully with all beings – wholly wholesome living. In the daytime dealing with other humans we are drawn into this state of self- interest dead or deadly dangers, which we avoid in the early morning natural world only with beautiful birds’ singing and bunnies’ scurrying.
Verified by All Dharmas, Dharma-dhātu
Good morning! We are very fortunate that we can sit in peace and harmony here, now, with all. This is the way the Buddha and all ancestors lived their whole lives. The news from Japan this morning was all about the second anniversary of the Great East Japan Earthquake, which claimed more than twenty thousand lives and missing. More than 310,000 are still refugees, and more than 160,000 are evacuees from the Fukushima nuclear disasters, many of them leaving homes, jobs, families, etc. We have more disasters and destruction in store; the human race especially is causing the global problematique – nuclear holocaust, global warming, mass extinction, etc. How can we stop and be saved from them? The Buddha showed how we can live in a wholly wholesome way and world with holy harmony, truth, goodness, and beauty. Dogen described the concrete path and process of how we can achieve the Buddha Way, the Awakened Way, in his Genjōkōan, Realizing Universal Truth: To learn the Awakened Way is to learn the self. To learn the self is to forget the self. To forget the self is to be verified by all dharmas. To be verified by all dharmas is to drop off the bodies and minds of the self and others. The trace of awakening is at rest and extinct. The traceless awakening is furthered on and on. “To be verified by all dharmas” means to be verified by all things in the world – the sky, stars, mountains, rivers, plants, animals, etc. How can we be verified by them concretely? We must be verified by the concrete lives and living ways of the Buddha and ancestors with their warm hearts, blood, bones, flesh, and skin. So, we must study their living ways. Our lives and living ways must be warmed, warned, and attested by them right here and now, each moment, every day in our continuous concentrated cultivation and verification. … Continue reading
Spring Sphere Settling
Good morning! This spring sphere turns rain and snow into a life-giver to all plants, then to all animals. When we sit we become truth and peace like trees. Let’s breathe free and fully with the whole body like trees blooming and bearing fruit. So, enjoy your dignified bodies and deep breathing with the spring air, earth, and the whole world. 3/10/13 (family sitting)
Buddha-nature Here Now
Good morning! With this rain most snow has melted away. A phone call from Japan last night informed me of a darkening smog storm there which most likely came from China. This morning we had the second anniversary of the Great East Japan Earthquake, which took place on 3/11 (the exact time is actually several hours later). Twenty thousand people were dead or lost. Still more than 310,000 people are refugees with more than 160,000 evacuees from the nuclear disaster. They are homeless, jobless, hopeless, and lifeless, and yet the present government wants to promote nuclear plants and probably nuclear bombs. When these triple tragedies of earthquake, tsunami, and nuclear disaster came, there was no distinction of young or old, men or women, or anything whatsoever. Suddenly they were swallowed up in these disasters. We have threefold disasters and sufferings, individual, social, and ecological which are all multiplied now. Why do we have these disasters and sufferings? These could have been eliminated or at least ameliorated, except perhaps for the nuclear ones. We forgot the previous earthquakes and tsunamis, and built towns, cities, and nuclear plants on seashores and even on active seismic faults. We believe in civilization, states, success, self, etc., thus making more materialism, militarism, money-ism, and me-ism stronger and more severe. Goebbels, Hitler’s Propaganda Minister, said, “If lies are big enough and repeated, people believe in them.” The bigger the lie, the easier they are believed. So people believe in civilization, convenience, contrivances, control, conceit, etc, resulting in irreparable disasters and sufferings. We are soon going to have the tenth anniversary of the Iraq war arising from the 9/11 disaster, resulting in worse situations with no one taking responsibility. Actually no one can take responsibility for deaths and devastations once done, just as … Continue reading

Diverse Degrees and Differences
Good evening! The ice on our pond has melted, but it will take some time for the fish to wake up from hibernation and fully and freely function there. Even when functioning fully and freely, they cannot experience human life. Even we humans cannot fully understand other cultures and cultivations. Humans cannot really witness the Buddha’s world. We can understand Dogen’s way world only to the degree that we have cultivated and verified. The Buddha held some leaves on his palm and said, “This much I have said, but what I have not said is like the leaves in this jungle by comparison.” We should not think that we have attained Buddha’s world, unless we live Buddha’s ways. There are diverse degrees and differences among them. 3/7/13

Heart to Heart
Good evening! We had a nice sunny spring-like day. I saw that crocuses are just about to bloom. They are the expression of their hearts responding to the very heart of spring. In Zen tradition, we speak of “heart to heart” transmission. It is not just understandings and actions, but a heart to heart blood vein transmission. In full ordination, ordainees write the names of the Buddha Shakyamuni, Makakasho Daiosho, et al., and draw a blood vein connecting each one. The blood vein comes from the master to the disciple and then goes up to the Buddha again, so blood circulates in ceaseless cleanness and clarity. Thus, the blood fully and freely flows without defilement, degradation, or destruction, and all become wholly wholesome throughout time and space. Then, we can bloom like a lotus flower, which already contains fruit. So, our cultivation and verification are one. Let’s breathe fully and become free! 3/6/13
Buddhas’ Bodhisattvas’ Brahma-vihāra
Good morning! We learned about a father losing his life, but saving his daughter’s life amidst a snowstorm whiteout in Hokkaido. He must have learned from his life the Brahma-vihāra, Holy-living, and enjoyed the Holy-abode or limitlessness of learning, liberation, light, love of friendship, compassion, joy, and equanimity. It is the Buddhas’ and Bodhisattvas’ Brahma-vihāra, based on the Dharma of Dependent Origination, intimately intertwined, selfless, supramundane Dharma-dhātu, which is diametrically opposite to selfishness. What would have been the consequence, if he had cultivated and verified the opposite way world? 3/5/13 Note: Four Brahma-vihāra = Four Limitlessnesses of friendship (mettā:Pali, maitrī:Sanskrit, 慈:Sino-Japanese, ji: Japanese),compassion (karuņā, 悲, hi), joy (mudita, 喜, ki), equanimity (upekhā, upekśā, 捨, sha) Enjoy the soft spring snow falling in the Great Triple Thousand Worlds (1,000 great worlds, each … Continue reading
Views Vary
Good morning! Now we have a bright sunny Sunday morning, almost seemingly spring here. In Japan March 3 is celebrated as girls’ day, Peach Period. May 5 is boys’ day with carps flying in the sky over green trees. Now they have peach blossoms and even cherry blossoms. Here we will soon see forsythias and crocuses, etc. I remember we could not see flowers in New York until May. We still see snow here, but the roads are dry and we can drive easily. Those who came here early saw the beautiful moon in the cloudless sky, already the half moon now, since we talked about the full moon last week. The moon is full beyond the new, crescent, half moon phases, if we see well enough. The full moon represents the Buddha mind, perfectly round, clear, and calm. It is always there, bright and brilliant, illuminating the world in the darkness of night, though not seen in the daytime or dark days. Almost eight centuries ago Dogen went to China in a ship, encountered a severe storm, and became sick with diarrhea, but was cured by sitting in Zazen. After the stormy sea stilled he must have seen the beautiful moon over the calm, clear sea. He mentioned the moon in the water in his Genjōkōan, Realizing Universal Truth, which I quoted last Sunday. This is the succeeding part of it: When the dharmas (true forms) have not permeated the body and mind, one feels as if filled with the dharmas. When the dharmas fill the body and mind, one feels partially insufficient. For instance, when one travels on the ocean in a ship, away from the mountains, and looks around in the four directions, the ocean seems to be round. It seems to show no different phases. However, this ocean is not just round or even square, but its characteristics are inexhaustible. It is like a palace, and like a garland. Only to the reach of one’s own eyes, it temporarily looks round. In this way are all things. Inside the dusty mundane world and outside the (conventional) rules (supramundane world), things are provided with many an aspect, but are only seen and grasped up to the reach of one’s own dedicated learning (of sitting meditation) and the power of one’s own vision. To hear each of the family-mode of all dharmas, one must know not only squareness and roundness, … Continue reading
