Manaslu and Tsum Valley, Day 19: Dharapani – Jagat

A yellow flower (light and spirit) sings by itself For nobody.   A golden spirit (light and emptiness) sings without a word by itself   Thomas Merton   In Dharapani, the Manaslu Trail and the Annapurna circuit merge.  With this, our solitude has an end. Masses of trekkers from all over the world come constantly toward us. In one village, we see a Hindu temple, a Buddhist Chorten and a Christian church. The area of Tibetan culture has ended too.         Picturesque Village         Heavy load         Chicken for the Dashain (Hindu) festival         Powerful waterfall stopping the path     … Continue reading

Manaslu and Tsum Valley, Day 18: Bimtang – Dharapani

An eternity of endless space a day of wind and moon         萬古長空       一朝風月   “One of the most frequently reiterated couplets in Chinese Zen literature” (The Golden Age of Zen, 246, 322, n.2)   In Bimtang, the view to the surrounding snow and ice covered mountains is breathtaking. Bimtang was once a busy trading place between Tibet and Nepal, now it is mostly a resting place for trekkers during the trekking season.           Morning view in Bimtang       Another morning view in the direction of Tibet       Visitor to our hotel room       Leaving Bimtang     … Continue reading

Manaslu and Tsum Valley, Day 17: Dharamshala – Bimtang

The rain has stopped, the clouds have drifted away, and the weather is clear again. If the heart is pure, then all things in the world are pure,… then the moon and the flower will guide you along the way.    雨晴雲晴気復晴 心清遍界物皆清 棄世棄身為閑者 初月与花送余生   The rain has cleared, clouds has cleared, also air has cleared. The heart becoming pure, all things in the world become pure. Becoming leisurely person, discarding the world and the body,  For the first time, the moon and flowers send the rest of my life.   Daigu Ryokan     Today, we get up at 4 am.  The sky is clear and dotted with sparkling stars. The white of surrounding glaciers is illuminating the surroundings. The beauty is overwhelming. This day is the longest day of our trek – 6 miles up to the over 17,000 feet Larkya La (pass) and down to the next village, Bimtang. We are in pure awe the entire day.         Night View     … Continue reading

Manaslu and Tsum Valley, Day 16: Samdo – Dharamshala

When I love mountains, mountains love me    我愛山時山愛我 Dogen     Although the walk from Samdo to Dharamshala is only 5 miles up the mountain, it takes hours to reach Dharamshala.  The place consists  of a few stone houses and several huge tents. Dharamshala was founded as a refugee camp for Tibetans and is now used by trekkers as a last shelter before crossing Larkya La, the pass over the mountain.         Enjoying a balloon       Yaks ready to transport wood to Tibet       Leaving Samdo       Meeting on the path       Alpine Flower       Path in the mist … Continue reading
