Supramundane Spring and Singing
Good evening! Now we can see daffodils blooming everywhere. The news from Japan reported cherry blossoms blooming ten days earlier than usual time due to warm weather in March. Flowers bloom in the same way year after year, but humans change year after year. Individual karmas and shared karmas effect things differently. When we come and sit here, we can see beautiful flowers and smell good incense, and even witness supramundane spring of flowers blossoming on withered trees and withered tree’s dragon singing beyond the mundane realms and karma kens. So enjoy nirvana without wind of karmas in beatitude beyond the mundane. 3/19/13 Note: The supramundane spring of lowers blossoming on withered trees (枯木花開劫外春: koboku-kakai kougai-no haru) and the withered tree’s dragon singing (枯木龍吟: koboku-ryūgin) are witnessed beyond the mundane realm.
Bodhisattva Bunny
Good morning! On the way here I saw many bunnies scurrying around. Over and around here we see many Buddhas sitting still. There was a bunny who was sent to the moon, saving a suffering servant of this world, and savoring amrita, ambrosia of immortality ever since. Sentient beings are set in self-survival karmas (habits, actions) with short-sight, short-circuit, and short-spark. They live with the triple poisons of delusion, desire, and divisiveness led into the triple maladies of me-ism, materialism, and militarism. Awakened ones are settled in wholly wholesome dharmas (truths, laws) with long-sight, long-circuit, and long-success (saving, serving, sewa, seva). They live with the triple potencies of purity, peace, and prognosis led into the triple minds of magnanimous mind, mature mind, and joyful mind. The boddhisattva bunny, great being, has been ever since enjoying amrita with limitless life, light, liberation, love, and learning. 3/18/13 Note: 1. The story of a bunny saving an apparently old hungry man actually the supreme being of this world was sent to the moon thanks to its selfless action was saved into the moon, as we see the figure now. (Please refer to this blog site posting the poem made by Ryokan, Mind Mirror, posted on August 14, 2011.) 2. Sewa (Japanese, 世話), seva … Continue reading

Flaring Fires
Good morning! Even when the spring sphere is here and flowers are blooming, there may be no or fewer fruits, due to the plants themselves, pollinating plants, or agents. The summer sphere offers more chances for forest fires or finger fires. The Buddha said that the world is on fire – eyes, ears, nose, tongue, and body are on fire. We must see when, where, and how the global fire, hell fire, etc. are starting and ceasing – inside, outside, both or neither. 3/15/13 Note: Finger fire is burning fingernails in place of a candle. Related expressions are skin flint, shave a whetstone, pinch a penny, squeeze blood out of a stone, etc. Friendly fire is to burn friends in place of foes. Figure fire is burning oneself in place of others in protest or prognosis. All these and other human fires with or without consciousnesses and consequences burn the world as the Buddha mentioned.

Store-consciousness Is Salient Starting Stand
Good evening! Now we have brighter and warmer days. The spring sphere gives plants and animals freer and fuller function in their life with more light and warmth. The snow sphere, like Hima-ālaya (Snow-stored), goes against such a way. Storehouse-consciousness inside and out makes us less free, full, bright, and warm. To counter such a severe situation, we must strive hard like making fire by rubbing wood sticks with continuous and concentrated effort. Storehouse-consciousness (ālaya-vijñāna) is the salient starting stand of our life, so we need to transform it to brighter, warmer, fuller, and freer function. 3/14/13 Note: The eighth consciousness, being the substratum or ‘storehouse’ consciousness (core of the brains and base of communities), controls the seventh consciousness (mano-vijñāna, mind-consciousness), the sixth (manas, mind) and the five former consciousnesses (of eyes, ears, nose, tongue, body). The fundamental base shift of it to the great mirror consciousness changes them to equality consciousness, subtlty- observing consciousness, and duty-fulfilling consciousnesses respectively.
Coming Home and Sitting in Complete Comfort (kika-onza, 帰家穏坐)
Good morning! Now we have the very thin new moon. We know that we will soon see the full moon and flowers blooming in the Dharma dhātu, Dharma domain. Flowers in spring, Cuckoo in summer, The moon in Autumn, Snow in winter Cool and clear. This is the poem “The Original Face” made by Dogen. We are very fortunate to be able to sit in complete comfort coming home (kika-onza, 帰家穏坐) every morning and evening together enjoying all things. Colors of peaks and Sounds of valleys are Altogether voices and Forms of my Shakyamuni. This is also his poem among the five poems referencing the Lotus Sutra. We are always at home in pure peace and prognosis in the Dharma dhātu, resting in great comfort in the Buddha’s house. 3/14/13
Karma-created Civilization
Good evening! We say a moment of a spring evening is worth thousands of gold pieces. When we sit, it is priceless. We can sit, stop karmas, and see how we usually act. So, please sit with your best body, brain, and breathing conditions in free and full function. This is one of Dogen’s thirty casual poems, composed at his hut. The path-ends of One foolish mind One seems to tread As the Six Paths. We can sit and see such civilization in sinful (separated, selfish) short-sights, strifes, and sufferings continuously, if we continue our karma kinetics. If we contrive ourselves with the triple poisons of desires, divisivenesses, and delusions, we come to the triple tragedies of discrimination, exploitation, and extermination. So, we need to sit – solid, serene, pure, and peaceful. 3/13/13 Note: The six paths are the paths or ways of hell beings, hungry ghosts, fighting devils, and animal, human, and celestial beings.
