From Karma to Dharma

  Good morning!   I had a rather long, busy trip to Japan. I joined the Soto Pilgrimage, visiting Sojiji for the 650th Anniversary of its second abbot, Gasan Zenji, as well as Sojiji Soin (the original temple), Yokoji, Hokyoji, and Eiheiji. I also attended the annual meeting of the Global System Ethic Association. When Gasan Zenji was abbot of both Yokoji and Sojiji, he rushed 52 kilometers between the two temples, along the mountain path named Gasan Way, so that he could attend services at Sojiji. Ever since, the Great Compassionate Heart Dharani has been chanted slowly to wait for him. His disciples propagated the Awakened Way all over Japan.   Yokoji and Sojiji were built by Keizan Zenji, fourth in Dogen Zenji linage. Dogen Zenji visited China and transmitted Zen to Japan. Bodhidharma transmitted Zen from India to China. Gotama became buddha, awakened, in the Dharma of Dependent Origination and Cessation (nirvana), and transmitted the Awakened Way. For the rest of his life he wandered, staying at a place for only one night before moving on. The Dharma, Truth, was expressed by the bo(dhi) tree, which embodies truth and peace. The Buddha himself was expressed by an engraving of his footprint, representing his itinerant life. The Dharma Wheel expresses his spreading of the Dharma.   The Awakened Way has been spread by wandering, walking over mountains and travelling over the ocean, by the aspiring practitioners of Zen or Zazen, sitting Zen, which is stilling or ceasing karmas, settling in nirvana, and awakening by it. Zazen is returning to the original state (face), reuniting with holiness, the wholesome whole, and reorienting karmas from sinfulness to holiness, from separation to integration, from bad karmas to good karmas. It is not only returning, reuniting, and reconditioning, but unconditioning all karmas, going beyond birth and death, the five aggregates, and six senses, as described in the Heart Sutra.   It is going beyond samsara (the Six Paths of hell beings, hungry ghosts, fighting devils, beastly beings, human beings, and celestial beings) and all its sufferings, which originate from the triple poisons of desire, divisiveness, and delusion. Human beings are now causing the global problematique, the interrelated problems of global warming, wars, weapons, waste, pollution, population explosion, resource depletion, environmental deterioration, ecological devastation, and mass extinction. The paradigm shift from karma to dharma and from nescience to awakening is the only fundamental solution for the karma of selfish samsara suffering and sundering.   … Continue reading →

One-colored Buddha Dharma

  Good morning!   We can now enjoy a cool cloudy quiet Sunday morning after sittings and service. We will have more rain coming. We have been having a lot of rain creating lush green around us and overgrown plants and overladen fruit trees. A few days ago, I took my ladder to pick extra fruit so that selected fruits would grow greater, and to save trees from not bearing next year. I found a peach tree broken at its trunk with overborne fruit and a grape vine spreading some 10 feet square drying its fruit. Micro management is essential for macro management. This is why overstretched empires collapse with mistaken micro management at remote local levels with wrong perspective, priority, prognosis, peace, etc.   I shared my paper on Zen and Science with our members through the mzcmitra listserv several days ago. I mentioned “One Color Buddha Dharma” (Isshiki-no  Buppō: Total or Holy Buddha Dharma) by Dogen. It means that Buddha Dharma penetrates through all activities – “raising a hand and taking a step” (ikkyoshu  ittōsoku), sitting, standing, going, and lying down, here and now, all 24 hours, throughout one’s life. Sitting is settling into the Dharma world like a missed or misplaced jigsaw puzzle piece settled into the proper place or a bubble returning to the ocean. We can see dharmas (bones, muscles, bodies, brains, breathings, behaviors, backgrounds, etc.), serve, and save them.   In this way we can shift our secular karmic behaviors (lokiya vohāra, lokya  vyavahāra) to holy Dharmic ones (ariya vohāra, ārya vyavahāra). The Buddha recommended that we strive in the Fourfold Exertions of decreasing and stopping all existing bad karmas, increasing all existing good karmas, and starting new good karmas. We find how every thing and action is interrelated with other ones more and more – every mickle makes mackle. If we continue the cultivation of sitting, seeing, serving, and saving, we come to the verification of holy, harmonious, healthy, and happy life more and more. The cultivation of stilling karmas is itself the verification of seeing dharmas. Only practice makes perfect.   7/18/15             … Continue reading →

Awakened or Adumbrated

    Good morning!   We are now officially in spring, since February 4, so it is brighter and warmer now. Especially after sittings and service we feel brighter and warmer in harmony and happiness. Wholly wholesomeness depends on our practice in truth and peace. Even being born, we may become wolves or awakened ones depending on environment, education, effort, etc. Dr. Suzuki often told the story of girls fostered by wolves, and taught parents not to make their children wolves.   Villagers in the suburbs of Kolkota (Calcutta) found monsters like wolves with long hair, glaring eyes, etc. in the forest, and caught them. They ran on all fours, could see in the darkness and smell meat more than 200 feet away, howled with other wolves at certain times at night, and were like and liked animals more than human children even after they were caught and put into an orphanage. They were discarded by their parents and saved and raised by wolves.   They seemed to be girls of two and seven when they were found. The younger one was named A-mala and the older one Ka-mala. Amala died one year later, but the older one survived eight more years. Kamala could not understand the death of Amala for a day, but she shed streaks of tears, noticing no more movement in her, after she tried to move her, open her eyes, etc. Kamala gradually adjusted to the human world and behavior, but she never stopped howling with other wolves.   Recently I watched an NHK program titled Science for Everyone, where they discussed the discovery of the mechanism of weather-related pains (pains in bad weather) and our heart ability. They found that weather pains are caused by a disturbance in the nucleus accumbens (NAcc) in the inner ear. It excites air pressure sensor cells, which disturbs the lymph, which contradicts the visual sense, whose perplexity causes sympathetic nerves to excite the pain nerves, causing pain and the nerves around the capillaries to cause swelling.   Another aspect of pain is heart ability. The subject endures up to the endurable amount of electric shock. Then, he is given a special ball made of special material from South America to block the electric shock on his palm. He could then endure up to the maximum test point, where ordinary people cannot endure. The ball was, in fact, nothing but an ordinary rubber ball. The relationship between the heart and … Continue reading →

Limitless Light, Liberation, Life, Love

        Good morning!   Today is the winter solstice, the start of a longer and brighter daytime, but it takes time to warm up the earth and air. People have been celebrating the renewing life of trees, representing truth world, with lights in this season.   Today, however, we have more extreme weather with snowstorms, sea surges, forest fires, devastating droughts, horrifying hurricanes, enormous extinctions, and imminent immersing in nuclear catastrophe.   This is caused by the human pyramidal system of disintegration and demise of the natural Indra-net system, with the five calamities of delusion, bondage, discrimination, exploitation, and destruction, coming from karma kinetics.   The sole solution to this is the Awakened Way of sitting and stilling karmas, seeing and serving the Dharma of Dependent Origination: limitless light, liberation, life, and love in holy truth, beauty, goodness, peace, and prosperity.   12/21/14         Photo: http://www.showclix.com/event/SeasonalSalutationWinterSolstice           photo: http://loveyogastudios.com/winter-solstice-celebration    Photo: http://funmozar.com

Season of Stars

Good morning!   We have a beautiful spring Sunday morning with lilacs in front of us, red buds, cherry blossoms, magnolias, daffodils – all kinds of flowers surrounding us as if we are in a great ocean of flowers. This is Easter – Ishtar or Aster – the season of stars shining forth brightly. The Buddha was awakened seeing the morning star. We are part and parcel of stars – our bodies and brains are made from stars and our lives are influenced by their movements. We forget the great universe of stars and stick only to a small world of selves.     While sitting I remembered a Chinese poem, which reads:   The spring sleep knows no dawning, Hearing birds singing here and there. From the sound of the wind last night, I know some flowers must have fallen.   This is the season of everything springing up, but soon we will see all flowers and leaves falling. So, it is said,   It is easy for Youth to grow old, But learning is hard to achieve. Never make light of a bit of light and shadow. From Ego-karma (Ego-maker: Ego-conceit) to Dharma-dhātu

    Good morning!   The first Sunday of the year turned out to be a Snow-day or, rather, Storm-day, causing thousands of flight cancellations, car accidents, blackouts, etc. As global warming advances, the atmosphere can contain more moisture, which makes more turbulence in the air, storms, hurricanes, tornadoes, flooding, droughts, wildfire, extreme weather, etc.   Humans are causing the Sixth Mass Extinction, polluting air, water, earth, etc., destroying habitats, environments, species, etc., devastating individuals, societies, and life systems, etc. We must make a paradigm shift from Ego to Eco, from Sin (Separation) to Holiness (Wholesome Whole), from artificial Pyramidal System to natural Cyclical System.   Ego and its Economy are within and draw their life from Ecology, not the other way around, like a bubble, foam from the ocean. Ego-maker (aham-kāra, ego conceit) is karma, creating the Triple Poisons of delusion, craving, and anger and the Triple Maladies of me-ism, materialism, and militarism (enslaved by them and all by money-ism), constructing an artificial unidirectional Pyramidal System.   Sitting and stopping karmas clarify this and confer solutions to the problems of the Ego Economy of Craving and Greed, shifting to an Egoless Economy of Contentment and Gift, contributing to the Triple Learning of sīla, samādhi, and prajñā (morality, concentration, and prognosis), contributing to the Triple Treasures of awakened ones, truth (Dharma), and true community.   Sitting still and serene endows anyone with peace and truth (awakening and nirvana) in contentment and the gift of all in Dependent Origination (on … Continue reading →

Good morning!   Early risers can drive straight shortcuts through winding highways, without other drivers and with good perspective. Everyday drivers know that straight shortcuts may have ups and downs, including other drivers without good views. Expert fliers can reach the goal with perfect perspective and priority without other drivers and obstacles – nirvana and bodhi (awakening).   Late drivers course through winding ways in jammed traffic, meandering at slow speed. So many minds drive so many karma-cars, but there are only two car kinds or gaining goals: fortune and fame. Me-ism drives materialism and militarism, manipulated by money-ism. Mankind makes misfortunes in egoistic entity, economic entrapment, and ecological extinction.   Karma cars, dividing and driving the unified universal Dharma Dhātu (Root, Realm), run politics, economies, societies, and civilizations into a runaway course of extermination, exploitation, exclusion, and extinction with artificial unilateral pyramidal systems. One Dharma Dhātu, like a limitless ocean, comes first, not ego or economy, like a limited bubble.   The Dharma of Dependent Origination of the Dharma Dhātu dictates the total perspective and top priority, deciding them as wholly wholesome ecology, not ego or economy. We must sit, stop karmas, and see limitless liberation, life, light, and love, like the limitless windless sky, waveless sea, bright stars, and warm sun.   12/15/13

Stopping, Surpassing Samsara Suffering

Good morning!   It is a beautiful autumn Sunday morning with sittings and service, the sounds of birds flapping and flying. It is the best season, just after equinox with equal day and night, a cool and clear atmosphere.   Yesterday I posted Dogen’s poem on one mind treading on the Six Paths or transmigrating through them –hell beings path/way/passage/destiny/career, etc. at our website:   1. Hell being path/destiny (niraya-gati) 2. Beastly being path/destiny (tiracchānayoni-gati) 3. Ghostly being path/destiny (pittivisaya-gati) 4. Devilish being path/destiny (asura-gati) 5. Human being path/destiny (manussa-gati) 6. Celestial being path/destiny (deva-gati)   Because of our karmas, we appropriate and identify the body as “I” and act as (if) “an independent, eternal being.” This is the common convention, to get into self- centeredness and self-assertion, creating the triple poisons.   This is the fundamental delusion or nescience (non-witness of nirvana/bodhi, unconditioned peace/unsurpassed awakening), evolved by karmas (actions, habits, heredity, etc., even called the selfish gene) for desire/divisiveness.   The triple poisons lead to the Six Paths with limitless varieties, which is called samsara, and involves suffering due to impermanence (no self-same) and dissatisfaction (no self-sovereign) of dependently originated phenomena.   This has been the case for all beings in all places and at all times, because they are karma heirs, karma relatives, karma machines, in short, karma slaves, not knowing how and thus not acting to put an end to such state.   The Buddha could know and act the right way to solve such a slave state in samsara suffering for the first time in the history of living beings. He sat, stopped karmas, saw the dharma of dependent origination and solved suchness.   He solved the problem of nature and nurture, which Dr. Suzuki called the law of heredity and the law of ability, from the very root of life with body, mind, and the world in the dharma of dependent origination. … Continue reading →

Supramundane Serenity and Satisfaction

Good morning!   Our wisteria flowers have bloomed. “Flowers blooming, the world has arisen.” The world arising, flowers bloom.   Sitting is settling, with selfless serenity and satisfaction, in the wholly wholesome supra-mundane world.   Sitting is stopping the self sense and strife, the source of sufferings for all sentient beings in this super mundane world.   4/25/13   National Geographic _____________________________________________________ KARMA and DHARMA   Good evening!   I saw wisteria blooming which I planted recently in my garden.
