Dogen’s Doei (道元道詠): Poems in the Way, 63

Two poems of residing in the mountain (2):

The moon on the peak becomes not

The friend of a mountain resident,

As it is also the one going around

Throughout the flamboyant world.

Sango nishu (2):

Yamazumi-no

Tomo-to-wa naraji

Mine-no tsuki

Kare-mo ukiy-wo

Meguru-mi nareba

山居二首:

山ずみの

友とはならじ

峯の月

かれも浮世を

めぐる身なれば

Note: “Mountain resident” here means Dogen who lives in the mountain renouncing

flamboyant world unlike the moon which goes around throughout it.
