Transmitting Lamp

Good morning!

It is going to be 109 degrees. Already I’ve seen fallen leaves. The Sino-Japanese character for fall is composed of a plant and fire (禾+火=秋). Fire can burn forests and the globe – global warming. Or it can be used for cooking, lighting, striking iron, etc.

In ancient days people needed to make a fire by grinding a stick on a wooden board. They had to completely concentrate and continue grinding until it started a fire. Keeping or transmitting fire or light needs constant and concentrated care.

This year the Soto School celebrates the 90th anniversary of transmitting the lamp to this continent. It is about 25 centuries since the Buddha strived and started it. Each and every one must continuously concentrate on keeping it going without interruption and idleness.
