Ecuador, 3:Week 2, The Oriente

The Oriente, the area of the rain forest in Euador, is located east of the Andean

mountains and covers nearly half of Ecuador’s land mass. It is characterized by it’s

extremely rich biodiversity.  We stayed in a remote area close to Rio Napo. In order

to get to the Lodge, we had to take a plane from Quito to Coca. From there, we went

on the Rio Napo downstream for more than two hours.   After a half an hour walk

through the jungle, we came to lake Pilchicocha. A canoe brought us to the Sacha

Lodge.

Oil and Timber are the major exploited  resources of the rainforest.  Because of oil,

rivers are toxic and many species of  plants and animals are threatened.
