Surreal Suffering

Good evening!

After hundreds of tornados spread devastation across this country, we now have a quiet world and calm atmosphere, especially when we sit in zazen.

We know that the destruction was so devastating – this episode being the worst in four decades, with over 300 casualties – due to the tornados traveling over many city areas.

We saw surreal scenes and sights of the same kind we continue to see from the record earthquake, tsunami, and nuclear disaster in Japan.

When disasters hit human-created superstructures and substances, the devastation surpasses all human imagination and ingenuities.

When we sit in zazen, we stop all surreal superstructures and substances, all artificial things, and even all things we deem “natural.”

We go beyond all storms of our karma, physical and mental – volitional, emotional, perceptual, and conceptual – in absolute unconditioned peace and ultimate truth.

Thus, we can attain awakening in the ultimate truth, beyond our conventional truth and temporary peace in vicissitudes.

So, this is the way humans can find the solution of samsara suffering in birth and death, and solace within the birth and death of all phenomena.
