Dogen’s Doei (道元道詠): Poems in the Way, 30

Thirty casual poems at my grass hut (10):

The long, long night

Like draping tail

Of a mountain fowl

Has dawned at last.

Sōan-no gū-ei sanjisshu (10):

Ashibiki-no

Yamadori-no o-no

Shidari-o-no

Naganagashi-yo-mo

Akete keru-kana

草庵之偶詠三十首 (10):

足びきの

山鳥の尾の

しだり尾の

長長し夜も

明けてける哉

Note: This is the dawning of long, long night of nescience, as Dogen intended

(cf. Doei, 26). It becomes more distinctive and deep, when compared with the poem,

famous and popular through the Hyakunin Isshu (One Poem Each by One Hundred

Poetsby a famous poet Hitomaro Kakinomoto (~709 C.E.?):

The long, long night

Like draping tail

Of a mountain fowl

I’m to sleep alone, alas!

Ashibiki-no

Yamadori-no o-no

Shidari-o-no

Naganagashi-yo-wo

Hitori-kamo nemu

足びきの

山鳥の尾の

しだり尾の

長長し夜を

ひとりかも寝む
