Constant Concentrated Cultivation Coming to Culmination

Good evening!

In ancient days men made fire by driving a hard stick into hard wood, like driving a gimlet. Describing this Japanese people would say, “Hi-wo kiru.” (Literally “cut fire.”) “Kiru (cut)” sounds strange, but must be used because it is the same action as driving a gimlet (kiri-momu cut-drive in Japanese).

We need constant concentrated action, not on and off in a leisurely way. In this way a water jet can cut a metal sheet and water drips can make a hole in a rock. Our practice must be like these, done in a continuous, concentrated way. Then only can we cut through, break through, come to culmination.
