Human Hubris

Good morning!

We could see the brilliant spring sun light and beautiful blossoming flowers this morning because of high temperatures beyond 90s for some days. Then, these couple of day temperature suddenly fell down to 40s. It went down below freezing point, because I saw ice in small pools.

There is the famous Monkey Story, actually Saiyûki or Xi-you-ji, (西遊記) Journey to the West, adventure of Xuan-zhan to India to seek the Buddha Dharma, but accompanied by a monkey named Goku (悟空), Enlightened in Emptiness, and two other animals. Goku once boasted to Avalokiteshivara Bodhisattva that he could reach very far very quickly with his supersonic cloud. When he reached the five peaked mountain, he wrote on the highest peak that he reached there. When he came back from his trip, Avalokiteshvara showed his palm to the monkey. Goku found his own writing on the Avalokiteshivara’s middle finger.

Human hubris is like this not reaching far enough like its within Avalokiteshvaras palm. Human beings consider things as safe, normalcy bias, until disasters happen like nuclear disasters, global warming, mass extinction. So, we must know that we don’t know and must be careful not to create disasters and the self-inflicted demise.
