Telling Dreams in Dreams

Good evening!

Today we had a rather warm winter day. Dogen had a volume in his Shobogenzo, Telling of a Dream within the Dream (muchu-setsumu, 夢中説夢). We all have dreams.

When an awakened one tells the truth, it sounds like a dream. When deluded ones speak of their delusions, they sound like truths.

This sitting is telling of a dream in the dream. All our actions – war and peace, truth and delusion – are dependent on what kinds of dreams we have.

We never stop speaking of our dreams. We are living in the kinds of dreams we dream – the six ways or worlds of hell beings, hungry ghosts, fighting devils, etc., or beyond them.
