Even Fire Is Cool

Good evening!

We had a temperature of 104 degrees today. “When the heart-head is destroyed and extinct, even fire is cool” are reportedly Kaisen’s (快川) words, as he and many people were set on fire and burnt in his temple Erin-ji.

When we sit in zazen, we become one with the world, not separated from it. A Zen master said, “Heat killing at heat: chill killing at chill” Killing discriminative delusion is becoming the situation itself without separation.

A monk asked Tong-shan, “How can I evade chill, when chill comes?”

Tongshan said, “Why not you go to where there is neither chill nor heat?”

The monk said, “How is where there is neither chill nor heat?”

Tong-shan said, “Chill kills you at chill. Heat kills you at heat.”
