April 8 is celebrated as the Buddha’s birthday or Flower Festival in northern Buddhist countries. Let us think about its significance. Civilization (urbanization, from Latin civitas) started 5,000 yrs. ago with the rise of city states with walls, wars, colonialism, slavery, class system, etc.
Around 2,500 yrs. ago there was a great spiritual revolution by the Buddha, Socrates, Confucius, et al, called Axial Age, turning the value axis – great paradigm shift from civilization to culture (cultivation of mind/body, society/eco), from war for matter/might to peace of self/society.
Human civilization, i.e., artificial pyramidal system, has now global problems: dictatorship, war, nuke, climate change, species extinction, eco pollution, etc. with the doomsday clock at 89 second before the global doom. Civilization is for consumption and convenience with delusion, discrimination, depletion, destruction, doom.
We can now awaken to the higher value of truth, goodness, beauty, and holiness, and act accordingly, cultivating ourselves in the Dharma (universal truth/ethic) and nirvana (no wind, of karma: unconditioned peace). We must observe global ethic and make a paradigm shift from civilization to culture in coexistence and cooperation.

4月8日は、北方仏教国において「仏誕会（お釈迦様の誕生日集会）」または「花まつり」として祝われています。その意義をともに考えてみましょう。
文明（都市化、ラテン語の civitas に由来）は約5000年前に城壁、戦争、植民地主義、奴隷制度、階級制度などを伴う都市国家の誕生によって始まりました。
それから約2500年前、仏陀、ソクラテス、孔子などによって精神大革命が起こりました。これは「軸時代」と呼ばれ、文明から文化（心身・社会・生態系の修養）への価値軸の転換、すなわち物質・力を巡る戦争から自己と社会の平和へと向かう枠組転換（パラダイム・シフト）でした。
人間の文明（すなわち人工的な金字塔組織）は今や、独裁、戦争、核、気候変動、種の絶滅、生態系の汚染などの地球的な諸問題を抱え、「終末時計」は世界滅亡まで残り89秒と迫っています。文明は消費と利便を求めるものですが、そこには妄想・差別・枯渇・破壊・終末が伴います。
私たちは今こそ、真・善・美・聖というより高い価値に目覚め、それに従って行動し、法（普遍的真理・倫理）と涅槃（無風、業：無条件平和）において自己を修養するべき時です。私たちは地球倫理（グローバル・エシック）を遵守し、文明から共生と協力の文化への枠組転換を遂げなければなりません。
