Heart to Heart
Good evening! We had a nice sunny spring-like day. I saw that crocuses are just about to bloom. They are the expression of their hearts responding to the very heart of spring. In Zen tradition, we speak of “heart to heart” transmission. It is not just understandings and actions, but a heart to heart blood vein transmission. In full ordination, ordainees write the names of the Buddha Shakyamuni, Makakasho Daiosho, et al., and draw a blood vein connecting each one. The blood vein comes from the master to the disciple and then goes up to the Buddha again, so blood circulates in ceaseless cleanness and clarity. Thus, the blood fully and freely flows without defilement, degradation, or destruction, and all become wholly wholesome throughout time and space. Then, we can bloom like a lotus flower, which already contains fruit. So, our cultivation and verification are one. Let’s breathe fully and become free! 3/6/13
Solid Serene State
Good morning! This morning’s top news from Japan was on the Tokyo High Court’s verdict of the unconstitutionality of unequal vote values – up to 2.43 times the value of a single vote – not voiding last December’s election. The plaintiffs are going to appeal to the Supreme Court to enforce the verdict and void the election. We have problems of manipulating elections by men, monies, machines, manufacturers, media, etc. in many places and at any time. But when we sit solid and serene, we can enjoy the solid and serene state in free full function with pure peace and prognosis here and now, this good place and time. 3/6/13

Triple Thousand Terrae
Good evening! Looking up the deep dark sky with limitless soft snow falling down endlessly, Ryokan made a poem: The Great Triple Thousand Worlds Standing in the soft snow falling, In them also snow falling… Awa-yuki-no nakani tachitaru Michi-auchi mata sono-nakani Awa-yuki-zo furu あは雪の中に たちたる三千大千世界 またその中に 沫雪ぞ降る The Great Triple Thousand Worlds are all composed of the Middle Thousand Worlds, which are all comprised of the Small Thousand Worlds. Such are our worlds. We think of only one world here. Not so. Even in one snowflake are the Great Triple Thousand Terrae. These are our life terrae. 3/5/13 Wishing worlds: Each time, a good time (時々是好時, jiji kore … Continue reading
Buddhas’ Bodhisattvas’ Brahma-vihāra
Good morning! We learned about a father losing his life, but saving his daughter’s life amidst a snowstorm whiteout in Hokkaido. He must have learned from his life the Brahma-vihāra, Holy-living, and enjoyed the Holy-abode or limitlessness of learning, liberation, light, love of friendship, compassion, joy, and equanimity. It is the Buddhas’ and Bodhisattvas’ Brahma-vihāra, based on the Dharma of Dependent Origination, intimately intertwined, selfless, supramundane Dharma-dhātu, which is diametrically opposite to selfishness. What would have been the consequence, if he had cultivated and verified the opposite way world? 3/5/13 Note: Four Brahma-vihāra = Four Limitlessnesses of friendship (mettā:Pali, maitrī:Sanskrit, 慈:Sino-Japanese, ji: Japanese),compassion (karuņā, 悲, hi), joy (mudita, 喜, ki), equanimity (upekhā, upekśā, 捨, sha) Enjoy the soft spring snow falling in the Great Triple Thousand Worlds (1,000 great worlds, each … Continue reading
Whiteout Horror
Good morning! This morning’s news from Japan described the whiteout conditions of a snow storm that took nine lives in Hokkaido. Just one or two hundred meters away from their homes, the people were disoriented or completely lost. … Continue reading

Good morning! Now we have a bright sunny Sunday morning, almost seemingly spring here. In Japan March 3 is celebrated as girls’ day, Peach Period. May 5 is boys’ day with carps flying in the sky over green trees. Now they have peach blossoms and even cherry blossoms. Here we will soon see forsythias and crocuses, etc. I remember we could not see flowers in New York until May. We still see snow here, but the roads are dry and we can drive easily. Those who came here early saw the beautiful moon in the cloudless sky, already the half moon now, since we talked about the full moon last week. The moon is full beyond the new, crescent, half moon phases, if we see well enough. The full moon represents the Buddha mind, perfectly round, clear, and calm. It is always there, bright and brilliant, illuminating the world in the darkness of night, though not seen in the daytime or dark days. Almost eight centuries ago Dogen went to China in a ship, encountered a severe storm, and became sick with diarrhea, but was cured by sitting in Zazen. After the stormy sea stilled he must have seen the beautiful moon over the calm, clear sea. He mentioned the moon in the water in his Genjōkōan, Realizing Universal Truth, which I quoted last Sunday. This is the succeeding part of it: When the dharmas (true forms) have not permeated the body and mind, one feels as if filled with the dharmas. When the dharmas fill the body and mind, one feels partially insufficient. For instance, when one travels on the ocean in a ship, away from the mountains, and looks around in the four directions, the ocean seems to be round. It seems to show no different phases. However, this ocean is not just round or even square, but its characteristics are inexhaustible. It is like a palace, and like a garland. Only to the reach of one’s own eyes, it temporarily looks round. In this way are all things. Inside the dusty mundane world and outside the (conventional) rules (supramundane world), things are provided with many an aspect, but are only seen and grasped up to the reach of one’s own dedicated learning (of sitting meditation) and the power of one’s own vision. To hear each of the family-mode of all dharmas, one must know not only squareness and roundness, … Continue reading
Sitting on Shelling off
Good evening! Whenever we sit in Zazen, we have a good evening, good morning, and good day, going beyond our small stiff ‘selves’ – ‘selves’ of selfishness, like the shells of shellfish. Today, I was caught in a traffic jam until I got off the highway. People in Peking, China are caught, daily, in smog, which especially includes small, particles, like PM2.4. Daily, we are also caught in the shells of our selves, societies, states, and symbols. Thus, constantly, we are caught in the sufferings of birth, death, loss, parting, etc. When we sit in Zazen in solid and serene state, we stop such habits as these – shells made from karmas – and cast off these layers of shells, settling in pure peace and prognosis. 3/1/13 Note: PM2.5 is Particulate Matter up to 2.5 micrometers in size, toxic organic matters breathed into lungs, etc., causing sickness.

Driving through Difficult Danger
Good morning! The snow seems to have continued falling and even started accumulating, so the driving conditions are difficult and dangerous. Only through actually driving and braking, can we cultivate and verify our learning about how to manage the difficult and dangerous conditions. When we sit, we can settle in peace and prognosis, and learn how to deal with and break through birth, becoming, decay, and death in peace and prognosis. 3/1/13
Sit, See, Share, Serve, Save Sentients!
Good evening! We have been having snow falling. So, some people might have been afraid of their dangerous driving and stopped coming here to sit and see its merits. When we do doan duties or attend the Dharma study class, you sit and share the Awakening, Awakened Dharma, serve and save all Awakened Sanghas. There is no other ways to serve and save all beings without sitting, sharing the Awakened Way and World – it depends on one’s own practice and attainment. We must catch all the opportunities to practice Zazen, the Buddha-mind Seal, cultivate and verify the awakening mind and awakened world. 2/28/13
Complete Cultivation-Verification
Good morning! The complete cultivations and verifications of our bodies, minds, and the worlds here now are the entire effects and results of all past cultivations and verifications and the total causes and conditions of all coming cultivations and verifications, either in the samsara and suffering or in the nirvana and nectar (amrita, ambrosia, immortality). 2/28/13
