Vast Visiting

Good morning!

We can still see the beautiful full moon illuminating the whole world. A New York Times op-ed article said, “Go East, Young Man” to find jobs and other new things. On the way here I heard an NPR report about “the crystal frontier” and “justice for all.”

Why do we need to go east? Because the light comes from the east. The light illuminates and penetrates through all, like crystal. Dogen said hensan (偏参), vast visiting, is not wide physical wandering, but total spiritual penetration that illuminates the world.

We must find the Buddha mind like the bright full moon, illuminating and penetrating all. Then we find our true job is to work for the true world, like a ball of clear crystal, as Xuan-sha found: having stubbed his toe into a stone, he stopped his wandering around.
