Fare in Familiarity and Freedom

Good morning!

After warm wet days the temperature went down below the freezing point, so we have the thick fog this morning. It is beautiful to walk in it, but very dangerous to drive, especially in unfamiliar places or highways unable to see signs and not knowing merging roads.

Dogen said, “Walking through fog, one gets unwittingly wet.” When we walk in fog long enough, we become wet with it. So, we had better walk on the well-walked well-tested way since of old, rather than rushing into the unknown dangerous  realms.

In this way we safely fare in the familiarity (priya-dhaman, lit. beloved domain) and freedom (philia-domos) rather than rushing into the perilous domain and fear-doom. We can enjoy holy (wholly wholesome) beauty, truth, goodness, harmony, and happiness.
