SHUSHOGI: The Significance of Cultivation and Verification
SHUSHOGI The Significance of Cultivation and Verification Chapter I General Introduction Clarifying birth and death is the cause and condition of the most important matter for Buddhists. Since Buddha is in life and death, neither birth nor death exists. If only we regard birth and death as nirvana, we find nothing desirable in nirvana, we find nothing disgusting in birth and death. We should exhaustively investigate birth and death as the cause and condition of the most important matter. (1) Hard is it to receive a human body, rare is it to meet the Buddha-dharma. By virtue of previous merits, we not only have received human bodies difficult to receive, but also have met the Buddha-dharma rarely met. We are in the best lives among various births and deaths and in the most blessed lives. We should not leave our dew-like lives to the mercy of the wind of impermanence treating carelessly the most blessed bodies. (2) The impermanent is unreliable. We do not know on which blade of grass of a road our dew-like lives will fall. Our bodies are already not our own. Life shifts in light and shadow, and can hardly be retained even a moment. Where has that rosy face gone? No trace of it can be found. When closely contemplated, the past can hardly be retrieved. When the impermanent overtakes us suddenly, neither kings, ministers, friends, servants, wife, children nor treasures can save us. Alone we pass away to the other world. The things that follow us are only our own action of good and evil. (3) We should not band together with those evil-doing wrong-viewing fellows who, in this world of ours, do not know the law of cause and effect, who do not clarify retributions for actions, who do not know the three times, who do not distinguish the good from the evil. The law of cause and effect is always distinct and impartial. The one who creates evil goes down, and the one who cultivates good goes up. There is not the slightest discrepancy in this. If the law of cause and effect could be nullified and become ineffective, there would not have been births of all the buddhas and the visits of successors. (4) There are Three Times in retribution for good and evil retribution in this birth, retribution in the next birth, retribution in the further births. These are called the … Continue reading

Full Moons
Good morning! We heard strong winds blowing while sitting. This may be the First Spring (Haru Ichiban: 春一番), clearing clouds so that we may see the full moon tonight. With it we start settling into the spring equinox, equal in day and night, chill and heat, thus called hi-gan (彼岸:yonder shore: nirvana). Then all starts to spring up – plants and animals, especially plants with bulbs and buds, leaves and blossoms. Crocuses, cherries, and other flowers bloom. Then, the Flower Festival, the Buddha’s Birthday, comes. The full moon represents the Buddha’s heart fully blown and blooming, clearly and calmly illuminating the whole world. Last night TV Japan aired the program Science Zero, which featured the space station. Satoshi Furukawa said that one can widen one’s views in space. he had thought of his native place as being Japan, but after staying in space for about a month he changed it to being the entire globe. He said there is no war in space lest you are blown back by blowing someone else with the same reaction force. This year the Soto School will hold the Preliminary 650th Anniversary Ceremony for Gasan Zenji, the Second Ancestor of its Head Temple Sojiji, followed by the 650th Anniversary Ceremony next year. It will then hold the 700th Anniversary Ceremony for Keizan Zenji, the Founder of Sojiji, and in between these two events it will have many activities. Their main theme is “Sojo: Can you hear the footsteps?” Sojo (相承) is mutual transmission of the true Dharma, or rather mutual maintenance throughout limitless time and space. The true Dharma of the Buddha has been rightly transmitted to us through so many ancestors with the true awakening and unconditioned peace (nirvana) mutually witnessed and upheld throughout ages and areas, mutually maintained in responsibility for all throughout the cosmos in time and space. Keizan Zenji told Gasan Zenji that if he did not know the two moons, he could not succeed to the Dharma. Gasan Zenji strove hard and at last awakened by hearing the sound of Keizan Zenji’s snapping fingers while sitting with the two moons, beautiful and brilliant. 3/16/14 … Continue reading

Good morning! Today we start summertime, and soon we’ll be expecting the spring equinox. I brought in a branch of star magnolia. Pussy willow buds taken inside have started opening and showing white petals, while outside they are still tightly closed. Soon we will have all kinds of flowers blooming after the spring equinox. After the fall equinox leaves fall and flowers finish blooming. We need a paradigm shift from karma to dharma, ego to eco, to shift the tide from torrential to tranquil, from karma calamity and sin suffering to dharma delight and zen (jhāna) joy. The Awakened Way is to shift the Triple Poisons of delusion, desire, and divisiveness to the Triple Learning of morality (sīla), concentration (samādhi), and prognosis (prajñā). Zen or concentration embraces morality and prognosis, shifting from the Triple Maladies of me-ism, materialism, and militarism to the Triple Treasures of Buddaha (Awakened One), Dharma (Awakened Norm of all forms), and Sangha (Awakened Community), realizing nirvana and awakening (bodhi), attaining amrita (ambrosia, immortality). 3/9/14
