Holy Harmony Health Happiness
Good morning! Did you see the bright full moon last night and the brilliant beautiful sun this morning in the great glimmering sky? Great, you saw and enjoyed them! We can now enjoy abundant flowers all around us, window-sides and world-wide. Happiness is here now, with them and us, especially after our solid, serene sittings. We can enjoy them in nature, sow seeds, or grow them, but all originally from nature. Carl Busse (1872-1918) made a poem titled “Over the Mountains:” Over the mountains, Far to wander, people say, Lives the Happiness. Aah, so I went, In the swarms of others, Came back with cried out eyes. Over the mountains, Far, far away over there, people say, Lives the Happiness. Everyone wants happiness, but it is rare for us to get happiness. Usually we seek happiness far far away. So, we wander and stray into foreign and others’ realms. Thus, we come back with tearful eyes. We seldom find the true treasures. If happiness is far out somewhere else than where we are now, we will never get it. Even if we get it, we must lose it, if it is outside of us. Because we wander around in the dusty dangerous swarms of others seeking the Happiness, we must come back with swollen eyes weeping, believing in people’s hearsays. It is like moles’ mud-meddling in mundane matters, maladies, and miseries seeking matter, might, and me from the triple poisons of craving, anger, and delusion, only falling into sinkholes. Mundane matters are materialism, militarism, and me-ism epitomized in money- ism, murder-ism, and mole-ism. Economics, politics, and egoistic are piling up a pyramid pointing to the planetary perishing. Politics, either plutocracy or democracy, paves the path to mobocracy by mole-ism, with the triple poisons, driven by karma kinetics. … Continue reading

Juji (Residing in/Holding Dharma)
Good morning! We can see a small weeping cherry tree blooming in our back yard. I have a bigger weeping tree and Yoshino cherry trees in my garden. So, I hope we can have a flower viewing party with these trees. Flowers can bloom because of their trees, seeds, parent trees, all ancestral beings, all environments, and genes evolving and developing ecologically since the origin of life. They flower and fruit depending on all of them. The Awakened Way and its Dharma cannot be without the succession of all our ancestors from the Buddha. If we defile, degrade, and destroy it at our time, the Awakened Way and its Dharma will be defiled, degraded, and die. We receive, maintain, and continue them by receiving, restoring, and recreating the Buddha Dharma with the future generations with the Buddha -mind seal, sitting Zen and samu (作務), physical work (lit. doing duty). We can attain the right Dharma eye stored in the exquisite heart of nirvana, unconditioned peace, shobōgen-zō nehan-myōshin (正法眼蔵涅槃妙心), unsurpassed awakening stored in unconditioned peace. The Dharma is realized by the direct face to face, heart to heart, blood to blood training and transmission. This can be verified only by actually facing, practicing, penetrating the heart, and permeating blood – Buddha-body seal. The Sangha means a community of professionals – guild, brotherhood, etc. It must be wagō-sō (和合僧), harmonious unified community or gathering, like water and milk, not like water and oil. It is realized by the Buddha life seal by receiving ordination of the triple karmas, physical, verbal, and mental by the triple learnings of sīla, samādhi, and prajñā realized with the triple treasures, pure vows, and ten precepts. In ordination we repent all karmas, past, present, and future, then take refuge in the triple treasures, the triple pure vows, and the ten precepts. Pure means holy (wholly wholesome, wholesome with the whole mind-body-world). In the Single-body triple treasures, awakening is called Buddha treasure, … Continue reading
Sesshin, Samyak-Sambodhi Seal
Good morning! We’re having the spring equinox sesshin. This is very auspicious, because the equinox is identified as equanimity. In the East we call this time higan (彼岸), the other shore, beyond the torrents and billows of this world. Further, the spring equinox is important as the night napping of plants and animals has ended and they’re waking up to start their new, free, and full lives. If we just continue our old habits, we must also continue our problems and sufferings. That is why we need sesshin, touching our minds (接心) and embracing our minds (摂心). Our minds are compared to the charioteers of chariots. Often our chariots are pulled by the “will horses,” or karmas. So, we must find our minds and control them, not be controlled by them. We need to embrace our minds. Often in the early Buddhist scriptures it is recommended that we protect our doors or gates (dvāra-gutta). Because we constantly leak through our sense organs and motor organs, especially leaks of conceptions, emotions, and volitions through the motor organs, we defile and destroy our world and ourselves. So, we must embrace our minds. We have a nice equinox day today in balanced day and night, chill and heat. Weathermen, however, have warned of a few to several inches of snow accumulation from tonight to tomorrow night. We have been having extreme weather due to global warming – droughts, hurricanes, tsunamis, earthquakes, even the globe itself warming to make more fluid magma movement. Recently we were warned about a Nankai (South Sea) Trough earthquake and tsunami, which could cause ten times more damage than the Great East Japan Earthquake. Scientists say the adjacent Tō-nankai (East South Sea) and Tōkai (East Sea) earthquakes may take place at the same time. Disasters happen not only in Japan, but all over the world with added human causes. Not only disasters, but disease, devastation from nuclear plants, and accidents by cars, etc., may happen any time to anyone. We must therefore be prepared for them and for deaths. We must solve our birth and death problems before our devastation and deaths. We must attain unsurpassed awakening in the truth of our life and living, and unconditioned peace, nirvana, … Continue reading
