Unity of Cultivation and Verification
Good morning! We can see the morning star clearly. The Buddha was awakened when he saw it dawning. We enjoy peace here, now, after sittings and service. However, the world is distressed. These last few days Japan has been troubled by torrential rains and a river breaking, with several deaths, more missing, hundreds isolated, thousands evacuated, crops inundated. There used to be typhoons through the limited area called “Typhoon Ginza” for about a month, but now they are year-round and everywhere, with unusual behaviors like this time – the outbound staying along River Devil’s Rage (Kinugawa). We are seeing refugees dying in trucks, drowned in the sea, etc. It is said that 340,000 Syrian refuges are fleeing into Europe, and more than ten times that number into nearby countries. More than double that number – half of the population – are internally displaced people (IDPs) due to the civil war and ISIS. According to the UNCHR there were almost 60 million refugees and IDPs around the globe in 2014 – one in every 122 people worldwide. The world is flooded with refuges and liquefied by wars and warming globally, a worsening world of wreckage, regrets, and worries. Due to the heat and rain I was not able to take care of my veggie garden well enough this summer, but yesterday I worked there all day. Weeds and plants thrive rampant- ly, fortunately, with more bees and butterflies. Recently I saw a frog and I had an unusual guest, a deer. Decades ago I saw a red fox. Yesterday I cultivated the soil deeper for radishes, hearing the phrase “radish ten tillings,” though I have been trying to till little, use fewer chemicals, etc. I saw self-seeded radish seedlings, so transplanted them. I sowed seeds of a few kinds of greens. I harvested honeydews, eggplants, etc. We need some time between cultivation and harvesting in our karma world. So, we cultivate ourselves and verify the results later. Zazen, however, is the direct instant way to witness cultivation and verification at the same time. Sitting still is itself stilling karma and seeing unconditioned peace, nirvana, and unsurpassed awakening, bodhi, which serves and saves all in holy (wholly wholesome) harmony, health, and … Continue reading
Who, When, Where?
Good morning! Now we can feel the fall atmosphere in the early morning and late evening, especially after sittings and service. In a fortnight we will have the equinox, equal in day and night, neither hot nor chilly. So, the time is celebrated in Buddhist countries as higan (彼岸), yonder shore or nirvana, where there is neither coming nor going, neither one nor many, neither annihilation nor eternity, neither birth nor death. The Heart Sutra, which we recited earlier, tells us that all is empty (Pali: suñña, Sanskrit: śūnya) of substance. Seasons are neither coming nor going, but dependently originated on the earth’s action. When the earth is upright, leaning neither forward toward nor backwards away from the sun, there is neither heat nor chill. Likewise, when one sits solid and upright, leaning neither forward nor backwards, stilling karmas of the triple poisons, there is nirvana without suffering, the rampant raging of the five aggregates. Anyone can and must come from and go to it without or withdrawn from one’s karma – better earlier, before one cannot. The Buddha said, “The world is on fire. Eyes are on fire. Ears are on fire. Nose…, tongue…, body…, mind is on fire.” The world is on fire, burning down all like a wildfire – global warming, mass extinction, etc. – due to our eyes, ears, …, minds being on fire. Our six senses have been evolved and developed due to karma and driven by karma with the triple poisons of desire, divisiveness, and delusion, causing devastation to individuals and societies, and eventually the destruction of the world. The Buddha also said, “Better than conquering thousands upon thousands on the battlefield is conquering one-self. That is the true conqueror.” How can one conquer oneself? Sit still, still karmas, see dharmas, and serve and save all in interdependent origination, in limitless relation and relativity. Anyone can and must cultivate his karma to witness nirvana and enjoy holy (wholly wholesome) harmony, health, and happiness in limitless life, light, liberation, and love for all. Only practice makes perfect. Who, when, where? 9/6/15 … Continue reading

Concentration Is Contentment
Good morning! We are having a sesshin today. Sesshin means embracing the heart-mind (摂心) and touching the heart-mind (接心). Our minds (in the wider sense, including intellect, emotion, heart, and volition, hara, guts) are usually out-going for survival with the Triple Poisons (desire, divisiveness, and delusion) and for action (karma), and thus diversion, diffusion, and confusion. Just like water in a bowl surges, spills, and spoils as the bowl moves, the mind surges, spills, and soils as the body moves. As the bowl settles still, the water settles calm and clear, without turbulence and turbidity. As the body settles still, the mind settles calm and clear in peace and prognosis. Through continued concentrated cultivation, anyone can witness nirvana (unconditioned peace) and bodhi (unsurpassed awakening). Sesshin – intensive sitting, stilling, seeing, and serving for holy (wholly wholesome) truth, goodness, and beauty – is the first, only, and best way to enter into such cultivation and witnessing. Animals are moving beings, constantly in physical, verbal, and mental karmas with the Triple Poisons obsessed by pressing needs, obscuring the wholly wholesome way world in nirvana and bodhi, the deepest, widest, and longest peace and prognosis. This is why the human species, with its most delicate bodies and brains, create consciousness in suffering (birth, aging, sickness, death, losing, parting, meeting – in short, the rampant racing of the five aggregates) through the transmigratory Six Ways of hell beings, hungry ghosts, fighting devils, beastly beings, human beings, and celestial beings. Trees, sharing the etymological root with true (lasting, deru or dhrī, root of dharma, form/norm, phenomena/law of phenomena), can survive ten thousand years because of their wholly wholesome way with water, wind, and the world throughout time and space (genes, generations, geographies, galaxies, etc.) settling still and strong, withstanding storms. This is the time of the tenth anniversary of the Katrina hurricane disaster, which destroyed more than thousand human lives and other species and spheres. This is also the fourth anniversary of the East Japan Earthquake with the associated tsunami and Fukushima nuclear disaster, which engulfed more than two hundred people and still leaves more than one hundred refuges from radiation contamination, some never able to return to their homes. We have droughts and wildfires causing … Continue reading
