Full Moon Mind
Good morning! We cannot see the full moon now, but can see only all variegated forms and colors of the phenomenal world. Only in the depth of the night can we see the bright full moon, the Buddha mind. In our ordinary lives we even do not care about it. Even though we usually do not care about it or can not see it, but far beyond winds, clouds, and dust of this phantom-like world there is always the clear cool full moon beyond the phenomenal appearances, and behind all its phase changes. 4/26/13
Supramundane Serenity and Satisfaction
Good morning! Our wisteria flowers have bloomed. “Flowers blooming, the world has arisen.” The world arising, flowers bloom. Sitting is settling, with selfless serenity and satisfaction, in the wholly wholesome supra-mundane world. Sitting is stopping the self sense and strife, the source of sufferings for all sentient beings in this super mundane world. 4/25/13 National Geographic _____________________________________________________ KARMA and DHARMA Good evening! I saw wisteria blooming which I planted recently in my garden. There is another one which has never bloomed for decades. Whether blooming or not blooming depends on the transmitted dharmas, environmental, and one’s own karmas. The nirvana flower and the bodhi (awakening) fruit depend on the transmitted dharma, social karma, environmental dharma, and one’s own karma. Buddha or Bubble
Good morning! It is now drizzling. All kinds of flowers blooming (hyakka-ryōran,百花繚乱) and flower chill (hana-bie,花冷え) are also the Indra-net forms and functions. Springing spring, sunny summer, falling fall, and windy winter are all due to the earth’s movement. It makes rain or snow, springing lives or falling leaves. Sitting in the Buddha mind seal returns to the limitless light and life of the Sun. Sitting in the bubble move seal remains in the limited liberation and love of the earth. Beautiful Blossoming
Good morning! We now have all kinds of flowers blossoming beautifully, and abundantly. This is the manifestation and function of the Indra-net in holy (wholly wholesome) harmony, health, and happiness. To enter into and enjoy it is “not deluded about causality,” (fumai inga, 不昧因果). Dharma Transmission
Good morning! Now we have a lot of green around us. Cherry blossoms have almost gone, but red buds have started blooming. I hope you have enjoyed deep breathing and profound peace. When we breathe deep with the Buddha mind seal, we completely refresh our whole system – body, mind, and the world. Thus we merge into the cosmos like the great ocean or the great sky. Actually the sky is called sallila, ocean in India. Then, we are liberated from small smelly skin sacks, returning to the origin, becoming one with the Dharma Dhātu, Domain. Then only, we find out our true selves, the true body, the great ocean like life. Only then, we become awakened to the truth of our original nature. We find that we have been deluded by our small bodies and minds, and find that all sufferings we had are dispersed like dense fogs, dispelled like dark clouds, and come to know wherefrom sufferings come – all from small selves sticking to small sacks. But, we never know it, until we reach nirvana, vast space, great ocean, and see things from there further, wider, and deeper. It is like waking up from our dreadful dreams. Even though we work in our daily lives, thinking that we are wakeful, it is not enough, not awakened, bound by all kinds of delusions, which essentially come from our senses that our selves, skin sacks, are the most important things. From this delusion, we create all kinds of problems and sufferings. Unless we stop it and merge into this great ocean, we remain in suffering, never solving our problems, individual, social, and ecological. As you know, they are getting more and worse. So, if we really want to solve our problems and sufferings, we must become Buddhas, stop becoming bubbles, becoming selfless. Only our practice makes it possible and perfect. The Buddha found this truth 25 centuries ago, and he devoted his whole life to save all beings from sufferings. Many followers practiced in the same way as he did, and became Buddhas. In this way from generation to generation, the Buddha Way has been transmitted and succeeded without interruption. If we want to keep this tradition, we all must become Buddhas and keep it alive and active. The most important thing for Buddhas is to keep the Buddha Dharma persist perpetually (reihōgujū, 令法久住). How? Make next Buddhas. Otherwise, it stops there, and disappears. The Dharma, as you know now, is like the limitless ocean or space, awakened by the Buddhas beyond the small selves, bubbles and clouds. If we stick to our small selves or other things such as money, material things, we lose our Dharma and the Dharma life. Even we stick to our lives, we lose them, much more the Buddha Dharma. Impermanence
Good morning! It has started drizzling now. Cherry blossoms are in full bloom here in this area. This morning I got the news of our member’s relative’s death and a request of officiating a marriage ceremony . Marry and bury are daily happenings for anyone. Cherry blossoms are famed for their mass flowering especially when they are with the mass group, but also for their incessant mass falling especially when it rains or winds “The vain cherry of the mind expecting tomorrow may fall by the night storm.” Let us sit with the whole body and mind here and now to realize unconditioned peace and unsurpassed awakening and to taste amrita, ambrosia of immortality, beyond the wind of karmas, and before the rain of impermanence let the beauty of life fall off. 4/15/13 Note: Asu arito Omou kokoro-no Adazakura Yowa-ni Arashi-no Fukanu monokawa? 明日ありと 思う心の あだざくら 夜半に嵐の 吹かぬものは
Juji (Residing in/Holding Dharma)
Good morning! We can see a small weeping cherry tree blooming in our back yard. I have a bigger weeping tree and Yoshino cherry trees in my garden. So, I hope we can have a flower viewing party with these trees. Flowers can bloom because of their trees, seeds, parent trees, all ancestral beings, all environments, and genes evolving and developing ecologically since the origin of life. They flower and fruit depending on all of them. The Awakened Way and its Dharma cannot be without the succession of all our ancestors from the Buddha. If we defile, degrade, and destroy it at our time, the Awakened Way and its Dharma will be defiled, degraded, and die. We receive, maintain, and continue them by receiving, restoring, and recreating the Buddha Dharma with the future generations with the Buddha -mind seal, sitting Zen and samu (作務), physical work (lit. doing duty). We can attain the right Dharma eye stored in the exquisite heart of nirvana, unconditioned peace, shobōgen-zō nehan-myōshin (正法眼蔵涅槃妙心), unsurpassed awakening stored in unconditioned peace. The Dharma is realized by the direct face to face, heart to heart, blood to blood training and transmission. This can be verified only by actually facing, practicing, penetrating the heart, and permeating blood – Buddha-body seal. The Sangha means a community of professionals – guild, brotherhood, etc. It must be wagō-sō (和合僧), harmonious unified community or gathering, like water and milk, not like water and oil. It is realized by the Buddha life seal by receiving ordination of the triple karmas, physical, verbal, and mental by the triple learnings of sīla, samādhi, and prajñā realized with the triple treasures, pure vows, and ten precepts. In ordination we repent all karmas, past, present, and future, then take refuge in the triple treasures, the triple pure vows, and the ten precepts. Right Realization Right Hereunder
Good morning! We had a light shower last night, so it is still a little cloudy. Thus we saw the very thin, dim moon. Today is the Flower Festival Day commemorating the Buddha’s birth. The full moon shines forth fully, only when the moon faces directly to the sun of clear and calm truth and peace. The King Mirror reflected the total truth of the great living elephant unlike the thin, dim image of it by the blind people, who insisted on their partial truth and fought for it. The realization right hereunder, stressed in the last chapter of the Collection of Cautions in Learning the Way by Dogen, is this coincidence the firm practice mind and the Buddha way right hereunder. This actual sitting is the direct contact with the Buddha way and the Buddha mind here and now. 4/8/13
