Himalaya Karmalaya
Good morning! Now we see the stored snow melted away, the wintry wind gone, and the freezing chill crept away with the brighter sunlight and the longer daytime. Himalaya is the snow (hima) stored (ālaya) mountain, once under the sea, but later raised by pressures, so now no plants can bud, bloom, or bear fruit. Our store (ālaya) consciousness, once under no storage, later came to store by pressures, and now no purity can bud, bloom, or bear fruit, free and full. Store consciousness is the result of stored karmas (heredity, habits), a result of poisons (delusion, desire, divisiveness) and now not known nor negated. Sciences see that we can control gene functions to change our ‘nature’ to ‘nurture.’ The Buddha sat, stopped karma-ālaya, and saw nirvana and bodhi. Anyone can sit, stop karma-ālaya, and see the selfless, supramundane truth and taste amrita, ambrosia of immortality, in nirvana and bodhi-awakening. We fail to change our instincts and institutions unless we stop karma-ālaya, resulting in delusion, bondage, discrimination, exploitation, and destruction. Well-being (Su-gata) is an epithet of the Buddha, who dedicated his whole being for his whole life to fostering the well-being of all beings altogether. Fortunate One (Bhaga-vān, lit. Luck-abound) is another epithet of him, who was fortunate and who makes all fortunate, not a simple beggar (vagabond). 2/23/14 Note: The Ten names of the Buddha: 1. Tathā-gata (Thus-being, being in Thusness) 2. Arhat (The Worthy One to be said “pure career carried out, duty done, no more return to this state – worldliness.”) 3. Sammā-sambuddha (The Rightly Completely Awakened) … Continue reading

Cloud-covered or Cloud-cleared
Good morning! Last night we still could have seen the round moon. The full moon represents the Buddha heart/mind -perfectly round, brilliant, beautiful, clear, and calm. However the clouds covered it to make the world dark, dull, and dangerous. When our heart/minds are covered by clouds of karma with the triple poisons of delusion, desire, and divisiveness, they make the world dark, dull, and dangerous, and into the difficult destinies (du-gati) of hell beings, hungry ghosts, and beasts or fighting devils. To prevent them the Awakened Way provides the triple learning of morality, concentration, and prognosis, which make the world brilliant, bright, and beautiful, and into the delightful destinies (su-gati) of the triple treasures of the Delighted (Su-gata), Dharma, and Dharma Community (Saṅgha). Aṅglimālā, who had once worn a finger-necklace made of finger bones taken from his murdered victims, made the following poem telling that one could be like the moon cleared from the clouds of karma, if one completely changes one’s heart/mind and enters into the supramundane realm. The one formerly drunken, But later not drunken, Illuminates this world like The moon cleared from clouds. The one who formerly did vice, But later repented with virtue, Illuminates this world like The moon cleared from clouds. The one striving in the Awakened Way, Even if still a young mendicant, Illuminates this world like The moon cleared from clouds. … Continue reading

Dharma-dhātu or Defiled-dhātu
Good morning! Before I came here I watched TV Japan, which was broadcasting predictions for the Tokyo Gubernatorial Election. It seems that the two no nuke candidates had divided the no nuke votes and that the candidate supported by the LDP, CGP, and Power Companies League with its labor unions would win, even with some problems over his gift giving and party money management. The voter turnout was low at 46% with a 45-year record snowfall of about a foot. Money might win over life. The previous premiers Hosokawa and Koizumi were always popular, with their street speeches attracting gatherings of thousands of people, but they could not raise enough attention due to media suppression and the last minute start. Another ex-premier, Kan, published a book today describing the disaster on his duty and saying that the only safe nuke is no nuke. If the new governor faces the same fate as his predecessor, the no nuke side will win in the next election. Without nukes we have the clean Dharma-dhātu, and anyone can enter it by sitting and stopping karma, like the way one sees one’s own image in a clear mirror. With nuke spewing radiation, however, there is no more clean Dharma-dhātu, but only the Defiled-dhātu. We say we “share One World” or “are born in One Lotus” (Ichiren-takushō: 一蓮托生). Now we must live in the muddy water rather than be the lotus flower unattached to it. In response to my request for Tokyoites on my Hitachi friends listserve to vote in the spirit of the proverbial “no money overnight,” a friend said he wanted to “live robustly and roll down quickly” (pin-koro) rather than living longer in sickness knowing “the last jacket has no pockets“and “not leaving beautiful paddies” to his successor. There is a way to quickly “roll above and live robustly” (koro-pin), living the Eightfold Great One’s Awakening for the Economy of Contentment and Dharma based on Eco, not that of Craving and Delusion bound by Ego. … Continue reading

Tokyo Election Turning Earth?
Tokyo Governor Election: Critical Turning Point of the World:? The past Premier Hosokawa, with the strong support of the past Premier Koizumi (of LDP in line with previous Premiers Hatoyama, Kan of DP, and Murayama of SDP against nuke plants) and the more than 70% Japanese people that are against nuke plants, is in a race against previous Welfare Minister Masuzoe, backed by the present Premier Abe of LDP and the political partner CGP. Hosokawa’s candidacy is centered on eliminating the nuke plants (all off line after the devastating Fukushima No. 1 crises – three plants melted down and the fourth exploded with new and spent fuels 100′ above ground with weak supports – forcing about 200,000 refugees even almost three years after the disaster), meant to oppose Abe’s restarting them and exporting such. Hosokawa’s intention is to change the course of Japan against Abe’s militaristic (visiting Yasukuni Shrine enshrining war criminals against the strong oppositions of China and Korea and cautions from the States, EU, etc., pushing for altering the Peace Constitution, perhaps with the nuke capability option by putting the plants on line) and materialistic (growth, corporate) tendencies. Hosokawa (and Koizumi) recommend the energy policy of abolishing nuke plants with their problems of accidents (on earthquake prone country) and shifting to renewable energy for better, safer, and more prosperous life with the paradigm shift of GDP to GDH (harmonious, healthy, happy life with more peaceful, natural, ecological ways with people and planet). Polls say Masuzoe is leading and Hosokawa following with Utsunomiya, who also wants to stop the restart of nuke plants, thus dividing the no nuke electorate into two (failing the unified candidacy). If Hosokawa wins on 2/9, Abe needs to re- consider his prerogative push backed with majority rule in both Houses, and become a great sea change for nukes and paradigm shift in the world. 2/2/14 Morihiro Hosokawa … Continue reading
