Attaining Awakening in Nirvana: 涅槃で覚醒を得る

Gate of Amrita Opened
Good morning! In Zen Communities all over the world, December 8th is celebrated after a week in Rohatsu (Last Month) Sesshin (Touching or Embracing Heart) to commemorate the Buddha (Awakened) Gotama and his awakening in the Dharma of Dependent Origination – that is, that all dharmas (phenomena) are dependently originated on causes and conditions. This means that all phenomena are dependently ceased. Thus, the Buddha could solve the ultimate problems of birth and death in samsara (flowing, constant becoming) suffering. He opened the gate of the ambrosia of immortality (amrita). This was described in the legend of his going out of the four city gates and encountering a sick person, an old person, a dead person, and a person striving in steadfastness. He renounced his royal household life to become a mendicant striver at the age of 29. After six years of hard striving with fasting, etc., he learned that mortification was not conducive to awakening, and he accepted some gruel from a young girl, regaining the strength to sit in solid meditation. He determined never to leave his seat unless he attained unsurpassed awakening (bodhi) in unconditioned peace (nirvana). Deeply immersed in his seated samadhi (concentration), stilling karma conditioning and staying in nirvana (no wind of karmas blowing us up and down), he achieved those things as the day was dawning: a complete release from defilements, starting with the triple poisons of thirst, anger, and delusion. This was the epoch-making achievement for all living beings to be able to still karmas and see the Dharma of all dharmas, becoming and living the awakened life in the Awakened Way. This has been transmitted face-to-face and heart-to-heart down to us through our ancestors. Though he said that there is neither Zen Sect nor Soto School, but only one Awakened Way, Dogen, regarded as the founder of the Soto School in Japan, left us the Universal Recommendation for Right Zazen. This is not a simple manual of Zazen, but his instructions and cautions for the Right Way of it, as in his Zazen-shin (Zazen Lancet), wherein he quotes Nangaku’s comments on polishing a potsherd to make a mirror, cautioning his striving student, Daijaku. The essential message is: “Learn the right form (usually mistranslated as “Never … Continue reading
Dec. 8: Awakening Day
Good morning! This is December 8, the day Siddhatta Gotama became buddha (awakened) about twenty five centuries ago, and the Awakened Way started. It was six years after he renounced his household life. He had tried many methods and eventually settled in meditation practice under two distinguished masters. He found the right way to stop karmas (present and past – physical, verbal, and mental), as he recognized that all beings are karma heirs, relatives, and machines. He attained awakening by reaching nirvana (free of all karmas) and constantly practiced meditation until his pari-nirvana (complete nirvana). The scriptures say that all seven past buddhas attained awakening to the Twelvefold Dependent Origination. This illustrates the dependent origination of consciousness, samsara, and suffering, caused by karmas, driven by nescience and craving (two roots) in three steps (delusion-action-suffering). All living beings are driving bhava-cakkhas (becoming wheels) driven by karmas, becoming beastly beings, hungry ghosts, fighting devils, hell beings, and celestial beings in constant flow (samsara), always in suffering (duk-kha, wrong- going, going against grain or wishes through birth, sickness, aging, death, etc.). Nescience (a-vijjhā/a-vidyā – non-witnessing) of the above truth or existential three marks of impermanence (systemic synergy), suffering, and selflessness. It is created by appropriating and identifying the five aggregates (form/feeling/idea/formation/ consciousness) as “self” (soul, spirit, etc.) . Animals (dōbutsu, moving things) sense motions, bodies, the world, then “my” body, the outside world, I, etc. When we sit still, especially in constant cultivation, the sense of in/out, self/other, etc. disappear and the unity of all manifests, through cessation of conceptions, emotions, and volitions. Unity of all in time and space (or infinite interrelations of life in dependent origination) manifests and is witnessed, beyond intellectual understanding of the interdependent origination of all (air, water, food, vegetation, the sun, stars, genes, languages, etc.), which is the awakening from delusions. … Continue reading
Coming Home and Sitting in Complete Comfort (kika-onza, 帰家穏坐)
Good morning! Now we have the very thin new moon. We know that we will soon see the full moon and flowers blooming in the Dharma dhātu, Dharma domain. Flowers in spring, Cuckoo in summer, The moon in Autumn, Snow in winter Cool and clear. This is the poem “The Original Face” made by Dogen. We are very fortunate to be able to sit in complete comfort coming home (kika-onza, 帰家穏坐) every morning and evening together enjoying all things. Colors of peaks and Sounds of valleys are Altogether voices and Forms of my Shakyamuni. This is also his poem among the five poems referencing the Lotus Sutra. We are always at home in pure peace and prognosis in the Dharma dhātu, resting in great comfort in the Buddha’s house. 3/14/13
Shakya Muni: Mindful from Shakya
Good evening! Shakya Muni means the Mindful One from the Shakya Clan. Muni came from the root man, to mind, sharing the etymological cognate of mind. When we sit still, we stop karmas, then dharmas manifest themselves and fill in our bodies and minds, filling the entire world. We become mindful of the dharma, dharma-embodied. Our static sittings make our dynamic deeds dharma-embodied in our daily lives. When we sit in Suchness, we become Such persons, and Thus-beings, Tathâ-gata, in Thusness, Tathatâ. Whoever starts sitting, starts being satiated by the Dharma, becoming satisfied with and in the Dharma. 1/14/13
