Practice Perfects Penetrating Prognosis-Peace

    Good morning!   We can enjoy the splendid spring Sunday morning with beautiful flowers around us – redbuds, dogwoods, lilacs, cherries, plums, magnolias, and so forth, especially after sittings and service. We are, however, surrounded by many problems – all kinds of calamities and crimes, global warming, nuclear holocausts, hot wars, horrific terrorism, mass extinction, etc.   The Buddha, sawing the fire and telling the newly converted fire worshipers, said, “The world is on fire. The eyes are on fire. The ears are on fire. The noses are on fire. The ears…, the bodies…, the minds are on fire. The triple poisons are fire. The physical, verbal, and mental karma winds are feeding fuels and blowing fire, flaring up.   Nirvana is stilling the karma fuels and winds to peace and truth. Only in this unconditioned peace can one witness the unsurpassed awakening of truth. The Fukanzazengi, Universal Recommendation for the Right Zazen, tells the root of the way to be perfect penetration, purity, priya-dhāman (freedom, lit. beloved domain), and presentness.   Gandhi said, “There is no way to peace. Peace is the way.” Me-ism, materialism, militarism, and money-ism can never be the way to peace, but to wars. Prajñā (prognosis, awakening), purity, priya-dhāman, and peace are the only ways to a harmonious, healthy, happy, and holy (wholly wholesome) way – though present in person, only practice makes perfect.   4/12/15     … Continue reading →

Samsara Suffering or Amrita Ambrosia

    Good morning!   We are at the Spring Equinox, equal in day and night, heat and chill, thus empty of heat and chill. We can now open our windows, equalizing air and emptying inside and out. Equinox is identified as higan, yonder shore or nirvana, where no wind of karma blows – no discriminations whatsoever.   Our karmas create separations and sectionalism, selfishness and suffering. Our evolution has become devolution. So revolution to original holiness, wholesome whole, is necessary now or else only destruction follows. Stilling karmas is in sitting still, stopping physical, verbal, and mental karmas.   The Buddha’s awakening to the nature of karmas led to the fundamental and drastic Spiritual Revolution – awakening from delusions and dreadful dreams, as awakening from delusions like waking up from dreams can only attest the emptiness of delusions like the entity-less nature of karmic worlds.   All living beings, karma machines, stray and suffer in karma dreams and delusions, devastating and destroying their lives and living in realms drunken in the triple poisons of attachment, aversion, and delusion. Samsara suffering in karma makes it difficult to still and settle in nirvana and amrita, ambrosia, immortality.   3/22/15

Karma Nescience to Karmaless Nirvana

    Good morning!   I forwarded an article on the “Terror of War” or “Napalm Girl”, the famous photo from the Vietnam war of the girl running naked, burnt by a napalm bomb, in a Vietnamese field. The picture was taken by an Associated Press cameraman, Nick Ut, on June 8, 1972.  It was distributed to every paper throughout the world. It helped end the Vietnam war in January, 1973, with Americans leaving there in March, and the photo eventually gaining the Pulitzer Prize.   This picture–along with the picture of a man with a gun at his head in Vietnam, as well as that of the skinny, naked women at Auschwitz concentration camp– shocked me and changed my life, living for peace. The article that I forwarded was a recent report on the “Napalm Girl”. Kim Phuc, as she is named, was burned to the third degree, and was not expected to survive.  But, she survived, and eventually founded Kim Phuc Foundation International, healing children of war.   Discrimination and war historically started with the origin of city-states, whose structures of power and money are distinctly pyramidal.  The 20th century was called the century of nationalism and war.  Now, this pyramidal system seems to be increasingly taken over by money-ism, along with me-ism, materialism and militarism. The money machines have made money on wars, but they are ultimately destroying their own existence, with their creation of the catastrophic problems of nukes, global warming, mass extinction, etc.   Spiritual Revolution counters this pyramidal tomb of discrimination, deprivation, destruction, etc. The Buddha foresaw the destruction of the world due to the selfish strife and suffering, and solved the fundamental cause of karma, sitting and stopping karma, to realize nirvana–“no wind of karma”–and awakened life. The historical figures of King Ashoka, Prince Regent Shotoku, et al, followed his path of peace, and Gandhi, Martin Luther King, et al, followed suite, working for truth and peace.   3/15/15     1972年6月8日、南ベトナム軍と北ベトナム軍が激戦を交わすチャンバンで、南ベトナム軍がナパーム弾を投下しました。焼夷弾が落ちたのは、キム・フックという少女が暮らす村。この爆撃を受けたキム・フックさんは裸のまま、大勢の村人と一緒に逃げ惑いました。  Facebookでシェア  ツイートする 「戦争の恐怖」”Terror of War” … Continue reading →

Foxy Fixed Fate or Free Full Function

Good morning!   It is bright and brisk with the Sunday sunlight reflecting on white snow and the temperature going down to single digits. We have sesshin today. Sesshin (摂心・接心) means embracing and touching the heart/mind. Our mind/hearts are usually straying like kites with their strings cut much less contacted.   We talked about the 500 fox lives due to the error of “not falling into the Dharma of Dependent Origination.” All living beings have been living a billion fox lives in that law. No one can escape from it and must receive its retributions – presidents and prime ministers with greater responsibilities.   Foxes are believed to transform their figures to deceive humans. All living beings, specifically specially evolved humans, transform their figures as beastly beings, hungry ghosts, fighting devils, hell beings, and celestial beings, constantly and continuously by their karmas.   Only when we sit and still our physical, verbal and mental karmas, can we see and serve dharmas as they are. Only when we witness nirvana, can we awaken to the Dharma freed from fox lives and fully function as buddhas. Sesshin is essential and endless effort in this purifying and purity path.   It all depends on our practice of this path, whether the world is doomed to destruction in suffering, in sanguine strife in the ocean of tears and blood, or saved in bliss in wholly wholesomeness in limitless life, light, liberation, and love. Awaken from the dreadful dreams of foxy cries in the tiger skin!   2/22/15

From Ablazed World to Awakened World

    Good morning!   The days are getting longer and warmer. This week’s issue of Time Magazine featured longevity. Its cover showed a baby’s picture with the caption “This baby could live to be 142 YEARS OLD: Dispatches From the Frontiers of Longevity.” The section GET YOUR HEAD IN THE GAME, with a picture of a baby in half lotus, with a juzu (rosary), talks mostly about mindfulness, meditation, relaxation, and optimism. The portion “Putting Out Fires” says that meditation reduces inflammatory cytokines, revitalizes genes, Telomere gene and gray matter.   Nirvana (nibbāṇa) is almost universally believed to mean “putting out fire,” following the traditional interpretation, taking the prefix nir as “out.” The often used stock phrase “ni-vāte padīpa” (lamp in no-wind) clearly illustrates the nirvana state of light (awakening) in no karma wind blowing.   The magazine feature toward its end notes that not only longevity but also lifestyle is important. Nirvana is the key to a paradigm shift of lifestyle, civilization system, ecology sanity, and life system sanctity into crucial cultivation and culture with wholly wholesome way and world.   Our cold-blooded world on fire, of stresses and sufferings with small, short-sighted sinful karmas blown into hungry ghosts, fighting devils, and hell beings, must shift to a warm-hearted world in holy harmony, health, and happiness in limitless light, liberation, love and life.   2/15/15

Awakened or Adumbrated

    Good morning!   We are now officially in spring, since February 4, so it is brighter and warmer now. Especially after sittings and service we feel brighter and warmer in harmony and happiness. Wholly wholesomeness depends on our practice in truth and peace. Even being born, we may become wolves or awakened ones depending on environment, education, effort, etc. Dr. Suzuki often told the story of girls fostered by wolves, and taught parents not to make their children wolves.   Villagers in the suburbs of Kolkota (Calcutta) found monsters like wolves with long hair, glaring eyes, etc. in the forest, and caught them. They ran on all fours, could see in the darkness and smell meat more than 200 feet away, howled with other wolves at certain times at night, and were like and liked animals more than human children even after they were caught and put into an orphanage. They were discarded by their parents and saved and raised by wolves.   They seemed to be girls of two and seven when they were found. The younger one was named A-mala and the older one Ka-mala. Amala died one year later, but the older one survived eight more years. Kamala could not understand the death of Amala for a day, but she shed streaks of tears, noticing no more movement in her, after she tried to move her, open her eyes, etc. Kamala gradually adjusted to the human world and behavior, but she never stopped howling with other wolves.   Recently I watched an NHK program titled Science for Everyone, where they discussed the discovery of the mechanism of weather-related pains (pains in bad weather) and our heart ability. They found that weather pains are caused by a disturbance in the nucleus accumbens (NAcc) in the inner ear. It excites air pressure sensor cells, which disturbs the lymph, which contradicts the visual sense, whose perplexity causes sympathetic nerves to excite the pain nerves, causing pain and the nerves around the capillaries to cause swelling.   Another aspect of pain is heart ability. The subject endures up to the endurable amount of electric shock. Then, he is given a special ball made of special material from South America to block the electric shock on his palm. He could then endure up to the maximum test point, where ordinary people cannot endure. The ball was, in fact, nothing but an ordinary rubber ball. The relationship between the heart and … Continue reading →

Ending Endless Enmities

    Good morning!   Now it is February. Time flies! Life empties! Did you hear about a Japanese journalist who was decapitated by ISIS members? It is a detestable savagery. They warned the Japanese Prime Minister that any Japanese anywhere is now in danger because of his participation in the Voluntaries, to destroy them. It is a horrendous and ominous thing, but we must know why it happened. The Japanese have been considered a peace loving people, with its Peace Constitution renouncing wars and weaponry after their atomic bomb experience of 70 years. Prime Minister Abe wanted to change that history with revisionist views and bellicose venting to work with allies anywhere in the world. He visited the Middle East to give aid to countries to contain ISIS. We must mentally orient to the source (yoniso manasi-kāra) – why it came out – to take revenge against the Iraq War allies!   The Buddha said:   “Abused me, hurt me, conquered me, robbed me.”  For those who hold a grudge, enmity is never appeased.                                            Dhp. 3 … Continue reading →
