Good morning! We have a beautiful Sunday in sesshin, with a lot of beautiful flowers and lush greenery around us. Sesshin (摂心) is embracing the heart/mind, like a turtle embracing limbs and head within its shell, without wandering around and working with leaks. Sesshin (接心) also means touching the heart/mind, like touching ice or fire directly witnessing it, though usually we live using almost automatic responses with small selfish karmas without a great, mature, and joyful heart/mind. I have been watching a baby grow from a helpless state to one of more developed and controlled sense and motor organs, with attention and actions, crying, calling, contacting, coordinating, articulating, identifying, distinguishing, and separating. Alienation creates egoism, exploitative economies, and an exploited ecology – now global warming (as the Buddha said, “The world ablaze, as eyes ablaze, ears…”), the Stolen Future (as he said, “Parents lost in the desert eat the son’s flesh”), etc. We must make a paradigm shift, as we are at the critical cliff of catastrophic mass extinction – due to us, for us. The Buddha opened the gate of amrita, ambrosia, immortality, for all to sit, stop karmas, and see the Dharma of Dependent Origination. Zazen is to witness the Dharma domain/body before our parents giving birth to us. Schumacher recommended a Buddhist economy in his book Small Is Beautiful, telling us to cultivate “small desire to know satisfaction.” The Four Holy Truths tell us of suffering, the source of it (craving), the cessation of it … Continue reading

Still Sitting Scene
Good morning! We had a shower with thunder last night and could enjoy lush green gardens this morning. While we have been sitting, we could hear the rain rustling on leaves, starting with thunder and with a haze of rain following. We can now enjoy the fresh green wind going throughout the world of our still sitting. We call animals dō-butsu (moving things), plants and places sei-butsu (still things). Plants sit still thriving on earth, water, air, fire (sun), wind, and space (four or five elements). Buddhists added consciousness as the sixth element, which evolved through movements for food, shelter, and clothing, etc. Motor and sense organs have developed into perceptions, emotions, volitions, and conceptions called mind. The mind-body-world complex is inseparable, but conventionally separated as if independent entities, creating delusion, discrimination, destruction, etc., into mass extinction, and ecological extremes. Sitting stills karmas – movements and minds – and unifies into harmony, holiness, and happiness with calm, clear, clean conditions like trees in our wholly wholesome world of truth, peace, and purity, like a lake without turbulence and turbidity, with wind and waves stilled (nirvana) in amrita, ambrosia, immortality. Rain rustling on leaves Penetrating through sitting Solstice lush green! 6/22/14 Enjoy seibutsu and dō-butsu scenes (at … Continue reading

Practice and Perfect Pure Peace
Good morning! We have a sunny Sunday with sittings, surrounded by fresh green and lilies, etc., after a spell of rain like the rainy season. With much rain we also have rampant weeds, even poison ivy, and broken branches. We sowed some seeds in our veggie garden so that we may enjoy fresh lettuce, tomatoes, cucumbers, etc. Working in the garden I have learned a lot about life. Some seeds sprout, but others don’t. Even if they sprout, a lack of water, soft soil, or sunlight can cause plants to grow poorly, without flowers and fruits. The cold and dry winter made some trees dead or flowerless, late budding or with shoots that became suckers, causing trunks to dry and die. Plucking them may or may not revive them. Dr. Suzuki of the Suzuki Method, also called the Mother Tongue Method or Ability Education, said that observing the five principles of better environment, better method, better instruction, earlier start, and more practice will make anyone a genius in any field. Dogen said that cultivation is verification. Only practice makes perfect. The Buddha said that one can enter nirvana by going through the gate of samādhi, like entering into a palace garden through that gate. Everyone must cultivate oneself to enter nirvana or pure peace (sometimes translated as Pure-land) through samādhi, and also cultivate good soil, seeds, and saplings with sunlight and shade, water and wind, etc., to verify, full of flowers and fruits. 6/15/14
