Commit, Conquer, Communicate, Cooperate, Coexist

Good morning!   Still sittings make us holy (wholly wholesome) and harmonious. I forwarded the speech Noam Chomsky gave at Riverside Church on January 5th at the 20th anniversary celebration of Democracy Now! to many groups and individuals. He … Continue reading

Blue Moon, Planet, Sky

Good morning!   After sittings and service we can feel the calm and clear world penetrated by emptiness (śūnyatā) like the penetrating blue sky we see now. As we sit still, karmas – conceptions, emotions, and volitions penetrated by the Triple Poisons of desire, divisiveness, and delusion – still also, settling into nirvana, unconditioned peace, and bodhi, unsurpassed awakening.   We could see the bright blue full moon a couple of days ago. The full moon represents the Buddha’s heart and mind in brilliant clear and calm prognosis and peace. Anyone can witness this full moon mirror mind and heart settled in the high, clear, and calm sky, illuminating the whole world brightly and quietly. Constant and continuous cultivation is conducive to verification.   The blue planet on which we live with all has been under threatening dark clouds with global warming, mass extinction, etc. The most imminent and worst disaster, however, is nuclear holocaust, not only nuclear bombs at hair trigger alert on our cities, but also nuclear power plants at risk of a terrorism attack, accident, earthquake, etc.   I forwarded two articles to our listserv, etc. last night. The first one says that even a “small” exchange of 50 – 100 nukes could create clouds that would cool the earth to cause two billion deaths, and that we must insist our rulers learn lessons from Hiroshima and Nagasaki: No more Hiroshima, No more Nagasaki, No more nukes!  The second article says that it’s time for the US and other nuclear powers to disarm.     Note: The titles of the articles are: Joseph Gerson. Our 70th Anniversary Homework: Confronting the Myths and  Learning the Lessons of Hiroshima and Nagasaki Sarah Lazare. Iranian Foreign Minister: Time for US, Other Nuclear Powers to  Disarm           … Continue reading

Man-made Madness

Good morning!   We have a splendid spring Sunday morning with lush green leaves, beautiful flowers, nice birds’ singing, especially after sittings and service. All this may suddenly be engulfed in an inferno flash of nukes by mishap, miscalculation, mishandling, etc. The latest Nuclear Non-Proliferation Treaty conference collapsed due to selfish sinfulness, never mind the possibility of a Nuclear Non-Possession Treaty.   The human species, a thousands last appearance on earth, are MAD, Mutually Assured Destruction, with nuclear arsenals and applied energy in imminent danger of nuclear holocaust any moment. Global warming is the other longterm catastrophe of this planetary life system. These problems come from human delusions of selves separated from the synthetic system, derived from bad karmas.   The Buddha was awakened to the Fourfold Truth of suffering, source, cessation, and its path to avoid delusion of anyone and destruction of the world. It is to sit still, still karmas, see dharmas and strive within that Fourfold Truth, not enslaved by money- ism, materialism, and militarism. All are in slavery, unless having attained freedom from forms and formations (karmas):          There is one means of getting gain, another means for going in nirvana.        Thus knowing, let mendicants, Buddha’s disciples, not rejoice in honor,        But practice solitude.               … Continue reading

Pealed Seal, Paradigm Shift

Good morning!   Sittings seem like great old trees standing tall, surrounded by many green trees and all kinds of flowers, solid and serene in the blue sky ocean. Our abundant greenery is due to the unusual weather, like a rainy season with a lot of rain and cool air. This is abnormal, but the abnormal climate of pouring rain with flooding and landslides, and with record high temperatures with drought and wild fires are going on in many places.   A severe heat and thirst far more severe than the scorching sun took place in Hiroshima and Nagasaki sixty eight years ago. I forwarded the Peace Declarations this year, as well as a video titled “Opened Seal – Nagasaki Seen by An American Marine Cameraman” broadcast by NHK in 2008. The video featured Joe O’Donnell, who sealed in a trunk 30 pictures of Nagasaki taken just after the A-bomb hit; after 43 years he opened the trunk for the public.   O’Donnell volunteered to be a Marine in 1940 at the age 19 due to the Pearl Harbor attack. He was sent to Nagasaki for seven months on Sept. 22, 1945 in order to record the devastated Nagasaki. He secretly brought back the pictures, but he could not sleep because of nightmares. He sealed the photos in a trunk and sent it to the attic. Seeing, in an abbey, the devastation anti-nuclear activists had pictured on the Christ’s crucified body, O’Donnell decided to open the trunk and share the pictures with the public.   The record of his voice to the local media shows his change of hate into compassion toward the devastated people, and the unbearable weight in his heart: “How can human beings do this? I could not understand it.” His wife left him, considering his action anti-American. He had 25 operations due to cancer, etc., but the government denied his claims that the illnesses were due to the effects of radiation. He died in 2007. His son, Tige, regretted not understanding well, but succeeded to his father’s will.   O’Donnell saw many burned and dying children, including small orphaned children taking care of younger ones. He was especially impressed by one heavily burned child, without hair, nose, etc., who continued to cry out: “You enemy, kill me.” The boy was standing straight and biting his lip with his dead younger brother on his back, waiting for the order of cremation. He left the scene with no words. O’Donnell later searched for him, in vain, to learn whether or not he had survived.   This story tells us that one can go beyond nationalism in wider, common human … Continue reading

The Wholly Wholesome Way Is World Without War

A “World Without War” is only possible by following the “Wholly Wholesome Way.” Separated sectionalism of any kind (self, sect, state, species, etc.) is contradictory and conflicting to a wholly wholesome system (society, sanctity, sentient, life, etc.). So long as … Continue reading

Sin = Separation, Holiness = Whollyness

Good evening!   I forwarded “A Time-Lapse Map of Every Nuclear Explosion Between 1945-1998,” showing 2053 nuclear explosions from 1945 through 1998, to our e-list. The explosions caused radiation disasters and resource damage. These and other problems come from the … Continue reading
