Five poems in reference to the Lotus Sutra (法華経: Hokekyō): The Way of Dharma Through day and night Is all sound and heart Of this very Scripture Hokekyō-to daisuru go-shu-ni iu Yomosugara Hinemosu-ni nasu Nori-no … Continue reading

Dogen’s “Doei (道元道詠): Poems in the Way,” 1
Dogen’s poems were collected by Toun Kishun, 8th abbot of Hokyoji Temple in Oh’ei 27 (1420 C.E.), 168 years after Dogen’s parinirvana, passing away, and later added. The first one is on his journey from Eiheiji to Kyoto … Continue reading

Good Friends (Kalyana Mitra/Mitta)
Good morning! We live in the world of interdependent co-origination. Our life is dependent on the environment which is then dependent upon with whom we live. Our life is good if we have good friends, and bad if we … Continue reading
Good morning! I hope you saw the full moon. The full moon represent the Buddha heart- mind with brilliant full, round, perfect light, fully clear and calm. Some can’t see it. Some don’t care about it. Some catch it only occasionally. Some can see it always, which is the merit of constant care and cultivation. Otherwise, we remain in the triple poisons of delusion, desire, and divisiveness, taking them as dawning, deliverance, and decisiveness. 8/22/13
Good morning, We can now smell wonderful scent of incense burning. The Buddha said, “Even though the scent of incense or the fragrance of flowers can be sensed only downwind, the fragrance of sîla can be sensed anywhere any time.” Sîla is straight spine, upright character, unmoved by worldly winds like a giant Sequoia standing solid and sky-high for thousands of years. Sîla is stabilized in sustained, solid, serene sitting, shared by and serving for all always. 8/20/13

Prognosis Shift
Good morning! Due to the abnormal weather we have been enjoying cool wet conditions with abundant greenery and vibrant flowers here now, while other places are afflicted with record heat, wild fire, drought, pouring rain, flooding, and land slides. There was nothing, but grass in the yard here when we moved in, but now we have dense plants thriving and variegated animals playing. So, please enjoy strolling and sensing the peacefully prospering life system here. Here we have now practitioners for four, three, two, one decades, cultivating and verifying flowers and fruits of practice of their lives and hearts, just like cultivating and verifying our lands and habitats. We have been reading Dogen’s Yūji, Possessing Time. He mentions the virtues of experience and the virtues of practice. I forwarded Chomsky’s informative commentary on the really existing capitalist democracy (RECD) titled “A Roadmap to a Just World” to our listserve. He does not discuss in detail whether capitalism and democracy are compatible, but what he describes there clearly tells them incompatible: lower 70% wealth scale population having no policy influence, but only 0.1% get what they want, which is not democracy, but plutocracy. He gives the roadmap of RECD, more of its failures, and for the future, dark shadows under it, two particularly ominous ones: environmental catastrophe and nuclear holocaust. He shortcuts the former, as it is clear it is occurring. He cites many opportunities to eliminate the latter’s threat, not acted on due to the dogma of the U.S. hegemony. Such sole supremacy can never be compatible with the salient system security and sure survival. He mentions the two components of the Magna Carta, the source of the Anglo- American laws and modern democracy: the Charter of Liberties, which has been dismantled, and the Charter of the Forests, which is for the protection of commons. The latter has been dismantled by the capitalist dogma of privatization – the tragedy of commons – commons of community of all. Privatization is creating the pyramidal power poisons. Our modern civilization (from civitas, city) is forced by five fictitious bodies of nation, corporation, media, education, and religion, all infected by the five maladies of militarism, materialism, money-ism, me-ism, and mannerism, essentially stiff sectionalism. We must have the prognosis shift from the triple poisons to the triple learnings, essentially wholly wholesomeness of all with all – beyond divisions such … Continue reading
Pealed Seal, Paradigm Shift
Good morning! Sittings seem like great old trees standing tall, surrounded by many green trees and all kinds of flowers, solid and serene in the blue sky ocean. Our abundant greenery is due to the unusual weather, like a rainy season with a lot of rain and cool air. This is abnormal, but the abnormal climate of pouring rain with flooding and landslides, and with record high temperatures with drought and wild fires are going on in many places. A severe heat and thirst far more severe than the scorching sun took place in Hiroshima and Nagasaki sixty eight years ago. I forwarded the Peace Declarations this year, as well as a video titled “Opened Seal – Nagasaki Seen by An American Marine Cameraman” broadcast by NHK in 2008. The video featured Joe O’Donnell, who sealed in a trunk 30 pictures of Nagasaki taken just after the A-bomb hit; after 43 years he opened the trunk for the public. O’Donnell volunteered to be a Marine in 1940 at the age 19 due to the Pearl Harbor attack. He was sent to Nagasaki for seven months on Sept. 22, 1945 in order to record the devastated Nagasaki. He secretly brought back the pictures, but he could not sleep because of nightmares. He sealed the photos in a trunk and sent it to the attic. Seeing, in an abbey, the devastation anti-nuclear activists had pictured on the Christ’s crucified body, O’Donnell decided to open the trunk and share the pictures with the public. The record of his voice to the local media shows his change of hate into compassion toward the devastated people, and the unbearable weight in his heart: “How can human beings do this? I could not understand it.” His wife left him, considering his action anti-American. He had 25 operations due to cancer, etc., but the government denied his claims that the illnesses were due to the effects of radiation. He died in 2007. His son, Tige, regretted not understanding well, but succeeded to his father’s will. O’Donnell saw many burned and dying children, including small orphaned children taking care of younger ones. He was especially impressed by one heavily burned child, without hair, nose, etc., who continued to cry out: “You enemy, kill me.” The boy was standing straight and biting his lip with his dead younger brother on his back, waiting for the order of cremation. He left the scene with no words. O’Donnell later searched for him, in vain, to learn whether or not he had survived. This story tells us that one can go beyond nationalism in wider, common human … Continue reading
