Ambrosia, Amrita (Immortality) with Wholly Wholesome Way World
Good morning! We have now abundant flowers around us, inside and out. The Buddha found the truth that all living beings are karma-heirs, -owners, -machines, and -refuged and the way to go beyond karmas for the first time in the history of life twenty five centuries ago. This is to sit, still karmas, see the truth, and save all beings from samsara suffering through the Six Paths. Most of living beings, however, remain in their karmas, not having the opportunity to encounter the Awakened Way and not having sufficient striving to realize it. Dogen said, “Even though this Dharma is abundantly endowed to everyone, there is no development without cultivation and there is no attainment without witnessing.” We are in sesshin, touching the heart (接心) or embracing it (摂心), today. When we sit wholeheartedly, we can touch and embrace it. Thus, we can attain the wholly wholesome way, our head/heart/hara in friendly, free, and full function and the wholly wholesome world in harmony, health, and happiness. We have been reading the Dhammapada in our Dharma Study class and came across the following verse recently – nectar (rasa) is also essence, thus can be ambrosia (amrita, immortality), enjoyed without damaging the world: Just as a bee leaves the flower, not hurting the color or fragrance, Having taken the nectar, so should a thoughtful one walk in a village. The Dhammapada, 49 4/26/15 Note 1. We as karma machines transmigrate through the Six Paths of hell beings, hungry ghosts, beastly beings, fighting devils, human beings, and celestial beings with suffering (duk-kha, wrong-going, dis-satisfaction). 2. Rasa means juice and taste in general (object of tongue) and also essential taste in arts (music, dance, literature, etc.). … Continue reading

Limitless Life, Light, Liberation, and Love
Good morning! We can appreciate the beatitude and beauty of perennial peace in sittings, service, and sudden spring with green plants and colorful flowers. The latest topic of the Science for Everyone program of TV Japan was grapefruit. Its origin was in Barbados, hybrid on Asian citrus. A tree in Japan grown out of a discarded seed started bearing fruit after 35 years. A budding seed in the kitchen planted 35 years ago first bore fruit after 20 years and now is bearing 1,000. The life tree seed has evolved into branches of all kinds of species. Our species has also developed into twigs. Mr. Otsuka, who often sends us his beautiful photos from Japan for our blog site, recently informed us of his mother’s passing away. His grand children living in California sent him a card saying, “Grandpa, even if you’ve lost your parents, you are not alone. We are always with you!” We are all with our ancestors and descendants – actually with all. Humans, creating languages and legacies in individuals and institutions, tend to become selfish and sinful (separated), but we are sharing our common assets of genes – actually the genetics of all. When we sit still, stilling our karmas with their triple poisons, we become true, harmony and peace, like trees that are harmonious with water, wind, and the world. When we become harmonious with all, we can function freely and fully with all throughout space and time. Dogen advised in his Tenzokyokun, Lessons for the Cook Monk, to cultivate the triple heart (great, mature, and joyful heart). We can enjoy greatness, maturity, and joy in truth, goodness, and beauty. The Buddha taught us the fourfold Limitlessness or Brahma-vihāra (abode, living, behaving) of friendship, compassion, joy, and equanimity (renunciation/windless of karmas, nirvana). We can live a great, mature, joyful life, limitless in life, light, liberation, and love. 4/19/15 … Continue reading
Practice Perfects Penetrating Prognosis-Peace
Good morning! We can enjoy the splendid spring Sunday morning with beautiful flowers around us – redbuds, dogwoods, lilacs, cherries, plums, magnolias, and so forth, especially after sittings and service. We are, however, surrounded by many problems – all kinds of calamities and crimes, global warming, nuclear holocausts, hot wars, horrific terrorism, mass extinction, etc. The Buddha, sawing the fire and telling the newly converted fire worshipers, said, “The world is on fire. The eyes are on fire. The ears are on fire. The noses are on fire. The ears…, the bodies…, the minds are on fire. The triple poisons are fire. The physical, verbal, and mental karma winds are feeding fuels and blowing fire, flaring up. Nirvana is stilling the karma fuels and winds to peace and truth. Only in this unconditioned peace can one witness the unsurpassed awakening of truth. The Fukanzazengi, Universal Recommendation for the Right Zazen, tells the root of the way to be perfect penetration, purity, priya-dhāman (freedom, lit. beloved domain), and presentness. Gandhi said, “There is no way to peace. Peace is the way.” Me-ism, materialism, militarism, and money-ism can never be the way to peace, but to wars. Prajñā (prognosis, awakening), purity, priya-dhāman, and peace are the only ways to a harmonious, healthy, happy, and holy (wholly wholesome) way – though present in person, only practice makes perfect. 4/12/15 … Continue reading

Flower Festival and Flower Fragrance
Good morning! We can enjoy a lot of flowers now – daffodils, forsythia, magnolias, pears, peaches, cherries, … The Flower Festival on April 8 is the Buddha’s birthday. We read the following verse in the Dhammapada last Friday at our class: Who will conquer this earth and this Yama’s world with its gods? Who will pick up the well-taught Dhammapada like a skillful one a flower? The Dhammapada, 44 A disciple will conquer this earth and this Yama’s world with its gods. A disciple will pick the well-taught Dhammapada like a skillful one a flower. The Dhammapada, 45 Last night I watched a film titled Fruit of Faith based on Mr. Akinori Kimura’s story of growing miracle apples without chemical sprays, usually applied 20 times a year. He is now helping farmers in his way at home and abroad. He wanted to cure not only his wife’s sickness – she was stricken in bed due to chemicals – but also all of life in holy harmony, health, and happiness. The Buddha tells of the fragrance of morality spreading throughout time and space: The fragrance of flowers, sandal, tagara, or jasmin does not go against the wind. The fragrance of the good ones go against the wind. A good person pervades all directions. The Dhammapada, 54 Note: You can watch the quoted movie here: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=zKhiLI7TCFk … Continue reading
