Fly Freely Function Fully from Karma Cocoon and Cave
Good morning! After our sittings and service, we have a quiet, calm, and clear Sunday morning with blue sky overhead and green trees around us. We had the Mindfulness Day event at the Pulitzer Foundation for the Arts yesterday. I spoke about individual karma cocoons, social karma caves, and environmental karma catastrophe, using the story of the blind turtle sticking its head into a hole of a floating log in the ocean to discuss human evolution and the solution for it: sitting, stilling karmas, and seeing dharmas, etc. Regarding my comment on the common root of tree and true, enduring in time and space, harmonizing with the wholly wholesome system, another speaker told me about getting the core hardwood rather than the other parts of a tree. The Heart (wood) Sutta was given by the Buddha after Devadatta left, telling us to attain the heart(wood) or essence (sāra), not the leaves, branches, or bark. I told him about the empty core of plantain trees (Foam Lump Simile Sutta), which teaches that everything is empty (suñña) of substance, like a lump of bubbles or the core of plantain trees. The core, heart, or essence is nirvana, un-moved (a-kuppa, a-cala) in equanimity (upekhā, lit. discarding) or emptiness (suññatā). When we sit like trees, we become truth and peace in harmony with the wholly wholesome world empty of and unmoved by karmas. The Buddha’s awakening was first expressed by a tree and monasteries have been called sōrin (group or grove of trees). Becoming awakening trees is the systemic, sustainable, saving, safe, simple, straight, sure way to still mind monkeys and will horses and the Triple Poisons of attachment, aversion, and delusion. For a questioner asking about the way to cope with a busy life, I spoke of the two essential elements of concentration and continuity, like a water-jet cutting through metal and dripping water piercing through rock. We must continue concentrated practice to cope with the immense karma force accumulated through four billion years and acting through our movements and functions. In this way only can we break through cocoons and caves to fly freely and function fully in wholly wholesome, limitless life, light, liberation, and love. 9/14/14 … Continue reading
Beyond Brains
Recently we posted the video “Zen and the Brain” here. We have been discussing Dependent Origination in our Friday classes, and I spoke about the vast width and depth of Dependent Origination awakened to by the Buddha in time and space. The Buddha said that what he described to people is only a small part of it, like a few leaves in the palm compared to the leaves of an entire jungle. In connection with the above Jimu showed me the book Buddha’s Brain – the Practical Neuroscience of Happines, Love & Wisdom. The authors of this book admit that no one knows the full nature of the brain of a Buddha or of any other person, and that something transcendental is involved with the mind, consciousness, and the path of awakening. The triune brain theory of reptilian, paleomammalian, and neomammalian brains is interesting, but it overstretches. The triune function of head-heart-hara (guts) is essential for our psycho-somatic selves. The mind-brain parallelism is intriguing but oversimplified. Mind-world (and mind-body-world) unity is the essential understanding of Buddhism. Our genes carry on billions of years’ evolution throughout the universe, constantly, depending on their situations and developing through their surroundings. Our bodies and brains cultivate and create new abilities and actualities like babies, adults, bodhisattvas, and buddhas. Buddhas and bodhisattvas regard themselves and others as babies limitlessly growing in the limitless worlds. 4/6/14 … Continue reading

Full Moons
Good morning! We heard strong winds blowing while sitting. This may be the First Spring (Haru Ichiban: 春一番), clearing clouds so that we may see the full moon tonight. With it we start settling into the spring equinox, equal in day and night, chill and heat, thus called hi-gan (彼岸:yonder shore: nirvana). Then all starts to spring up – plants and animals, especially plants with bulbs and buds, leaves and blossoms. Crocuses, cherries, and other flowers bloom. Then, the Flower Festival, the Buddha’s Birthday, comes. The full moon represents the Buddha’s heart fully blown and blooming, clearly and calmly illuminating the whole world. Last night TV Japan aired the program Science Zero, which featured the space station. Satoshi Furukawa said that one can widen one’s views in space. he had thought of his native place as being Japan, but after staying in space for about a month he changed it to being the entire globe. He said there is no war in space lest you are blown back by blowing someone else with the same reaction force. This year the Soto School will hold the Preliminary 650th Anniversary Ceremony for Gasan Zenji, the Second Ancestor of its Head Temple Sojiji, followed by the 650th Anniversary Ceremony next year. It will then hold the 700th Anniversary Ceremony for Keizan Zenji, the Founder of Sojiji, and in between these two events it will have many activities. Their main theme is “Sojo: Can you hear the footsteps?” Sojo (相承) is mutual transmission of the true Dharma, or rather mutual maintenance throughout limitless time and space. The true Dharma of the Buddha has been rightly transmitted to us through so many ancestors with the true awakening and unconditioned peace (nirvana) mutually witnessed and upheld throughout ages and areas, mutually maintained in responsibility for all throughout the cosmos in time and space. Keizan Zenji told Gasan Zenji that if he did not know the two moons, he could not succeed to the Dharma. Gasan Zenji strove hard and at last awakened by hearing the sound of Keizan Zenji’s snapping fingers while sitting with the two moons, beautiful and brilliant. 3/16/14 … Continue reading

Good evening! Tonight we can see the bright clear cool full moon. It represents the Buddha heart, round in perfection, nothing lacking or superfluous, brilliant, clear, and calm in unconditioned peace and unsurpassed awakening. Some can’t see, care not to see, can’t appreciate, care not to appreciate such a mind moon. Some can understand, can even activate the full moon behind the apparent shift of its phases of new, crescent, half, and full shining state. 12/17/13 The Full Moon Taken at 10:10 p.m. in St. Louis, MO, U.S.A.
