Casual poems at the grass hut:
In the course of the horse
Of flying light of the day,
How few are those
Who ride the Right Way!
Souan zouei:
Todomaranu
Hikage-no koma-no
Yukusue-ni
Nori-no michi uru
Hito-zo sukunaki
草庵雑詠:
とどまらぬ
日影の駒の
行すえに
のりの道うる
人ぞ少なき
Note: Nori seems to mean both nori (乗り) and nori (法), thus the poem may be
translated as below:
In the course of the horse
Of flying light of the day,
How few are those
Who ride the Dharma Way!
The present first translation is to make this double meaning rhyming with
alliteration (ride and Right, Right Way (Shôdô: 正道) as the Dharma Way: 法の道).
