Dogen’s Doei (道元道詠): Poems in the Way, 8

 

 

Poem made when the first snow of more than one foot fell

on the 25th of September in kangen 2 (1244 C.E.)

 

Snow has fallen

On the red leaves of September.

Having seen this

Who would not make a poem?

 

Kangen ninen kugatsu nijuu-go-nichi hatuyuki isshaku

amari furuni gyo-ei

 

Nagatsuki-no

Momiji-no ueni

Yuki furinu

Min-hito dareka

Uta-wo yomazaran

 

寛元二年九月二十五日、初雪一尺あまりふるに御詠

 

長月の

紅葉の上に

雪ふりぬ

見ん人誰か

歌をよまざらん
