Early risers can catch the cool, clear full moon. Early sitters can catch the bright, beautiful full moon minds.
Dogen saw the full moon and made his poem:
Even in the autumn, when
I’d expect to see it again,
I could not have slept
With the moon of tonight.
King Pasenadhî and Queen Mallikâ saw the full moon and agreed that the dearest thing is their selves. They visited the Buddha to ask if that was right. He agreed and told them to love others’ selves also, as others also regard their selves as dearest.
We hope early awakening to the full moon that is always there, beyond the shifting of its phases.
