“Truth only wins (satyam eve jayate)” with the Ashokan Dharma
Wheel is the Indian national emblem. Satya is made up with sat
(is, being) plus ya (suffix making abstract noun). Buddhists use
Dharma (from the root dhrî, holding, holding all phenomena),
because satya sounds static substance.
When the Buddha at his last bed was asked by Subaddha about
the true religious leader, he said, “I walked only on the Dharma
and the true way (naya: leading, eye, reasoning, morality, cf.
vi-naya, discipline). There is no other than the one who strives
in the way.”
Unless a blind turtle getting off its head from the floating log and
opening its eyes, it can’t see the vast sky and the great ocean and
swim free and full – humans with karma are like born blinds
groping a huge elephant, guessing, fighting for their limited views
or following other blind people.
We live on the earth at a corner of the solar galaxy in the
unlimited universe with billions of similar galaxies since
the big bang 150 billion years ago. In the cosmic calendar
the Buddha’s time was five seconds ago, thus almost
simultaneous for our awakening with other beings.
Anyone is a foam in the great ocean or a spec in the great
universe, appearing and disapearing instantly in this
limitless truth universe.
Dogen said to put our lives into the house of the Buddhas.
When we put our lives into the Dharma world, great ocean
of truth, being, holding life, etc., we attain the Dharma
bodies. We call one universal truth in different names like
Dharma, Dao (Way), Deva (God), Dei (God), etc.
The last picture in Garyo’s travelog I forwarded to our
listserv is the stupa of Amida (Amita-âyus: Limitless Life,
Amita-âbha: Limitless Light) Buddha. Namu-Amidabutsu,
Namo- Amita-âyus/ âbha Buddhâya, means “I dedicate
my life to Amida Buddha.”

liberation, and love!

「真理のみが勝つ（सत्यमेव जयते）」とアショーカ王の
法輪が描かれたものがインドの国章です。
サティヤ（Satya）は、サット（Sat：「ある」「存在」）と、
抽象名詞を作る接尾辞ヤ（ya）から成り立っています。
仏教では「サティヤ」という言葉が静的実体を示すように
聞こえるため、「ダルマ（Dharma）」を用います
（語源は dhrî：「保持する」、すべての現象を保持するもの）。
仏陀が臨終の床において、スバッダから真の宗教指導者に
ついて尋ねられた際、次のように答えました。
「私はただダルマと真の道（ナヤ：導く、眼、理性、道徳、
修養、cf. ヴィナヤ：律：悪を離れ善に導く）を歩んできた。
他に道の精進者はいない。」
盲亀が偶然、浮かぶ丸太の穴に頭を突っ込んだ（という人間
に生まれることの稀有の例えで）、丸太を外し目を開けなければ、
広大な空や大海原を見ることも、自由に泳ぐこともできません。
人間もまた、カルマに縛られた盲人のようなものです。
巨大な象を手探りしながら、自らの限られた視野で推測し、
争い、他の盲人に従っているのです。
私たちは、ビッグバンから150億年の時を経た無限の宇宙の
中で、何十億もの銀河と同じように存在する太陽系の片隅の
地球に生きています。宇宙カレンダー（ビッグバンから今日
までの出来事を一年のカレンダーに収めたもの）において、
仏陀の時代はわずか5秒前のことに過ぎず、私たちが他の存在
と共に覚醒するのも、ほぼ同時と言えます。誰でも大海の
泡沫や大宇宙の塵のようで、その無限の真理宇宙の中で瞬時
に消滅するのです。
道元禅師は「ただわが身をも心をも放ち忘れて、仏の家に
投げ入れて」と説きました。
私たちが己の命を法界、大いなる真理の海、存在の海、生命
の海へと投じるとき、私たちは法身を得ます。
私たちは一つの普遍的真理を、ダルマ、道（ダオ）、天
（デーヴァ、デイ：神）など異なる名で呼んでいるのです。
私がリストサーブに転送した Garyo の旅行記の最後の
写真は、阿弥陀（アミターユス＝無量寿、アミターバ
＝無量光）仏のストゥーパです。「南無阿弥陀仏
（Namu-Amidabutsu）」「ナモー・アミターユス／
アミターバ・ブッダーヤ（Namo-Amita-âyus/ âbha
Buddhâya）」とは、「南無阿弥陀仏（私は阿弥陀仏に
己が命を捧げます」という意味です。
どうか、あなたの命を無量寿、無量光、無量解、無量愛
へと献身してください！
