Stronger Support System, Healthier Heavy Hanging
Good morning! I found the grape trellis framework collapsed due to weathering, with heavy snow on the net and heavy hanging of Topsy Turvy bags. It is very difficult to build, keep, and rebuild such systemic framework. It requires constant caution, care, cure, and cultivation. It needs support systems with reinforcers, eliminating the damaging elements of wintry winds and baggy burdens. The more complex a system it becomes, the more careful caution, care, cure, and cultivation it requires. Make support systems stronger, and heavy hangings healthier. We need supporting systems, but not baggy burdens. 4/4/13 NG (National Geographic), mime-attachment1

Mirror Moon Mind
Good morning! We can see the bright half moon in the clear sky. Beneath it is the calm clear full moon, the Buddha mind. The renowned moon, “Get me it!” say Crying children. 名月を 取ってくれろと 泣く子かな Meigetsu-o Totte-kurero-to Naku-ko kana No one can get and give it to others, but each and every one must get it by actual cultivation and verification. Otherwise the triple poisons and the triple maladies get us. The great round mirror mind is always right hereunder, now, underneath apparent changes. We hope everyone gets it so that all can enjoy total truth and pure peace, with the great Indra-net giving all the triple learnings and the triple treasures. 4/3/13 Note: The haiku quoted above is made by Issa Kobayashi. The following is made by Basho Matsuo: The renowned moon, Going around the pond, For the whole night. 名月や 池をめぐりて 夜もすがら Meigetsu-ya … Continue reading
Stable Sitting Confers Comfort
Good evening! The spring evening sitting is priceless, with unconditioned peace and unsurpassed awakening. Otherwise we must pay the big prices of the triple poisons of delusion, desire, and divisiveness. Today I read the news that babies born within 1 to 16 weeks after the Fukushima meltdown in Alaska, California, Hawaii, Oregon, and Washington were 28% more likely to suffer from congenital hypothyroidism, which causes psychophysical problems. We have been experiencing nuclear tests and nuclear power problems or radiation with unsolved nuclear waste problems, etc. Haste makes waste. Haste makes hasty death and destruction. Stable sitting confers comfort. Stable sitting confers comfort for all always. 4/2/13

Beyond Billows and Beclouding
Good morning! We can now see the clear-cut half moon in the clear sky, changed quickly from the full moon after the spring equinox. If we are caught by the changing phases of the moon, we do not really get the full moon behind them. So, we cannot see the Buddha mind behind the superficial changes in the world and our minds. The full moon is always there. The Buddha mind is always here and now, beyond billows and beclouding. 4/2/13
Habits Halfway or Holy (Wholly Wholesome)
Good morning! The predicted snow did not come. The moon, however, now waning almost to half, can be seen partially in the clouds. I read a little bit of the best seller, The Power of Habit. We can create new habits, either good ones or bad ones. We must, however, come and see deeply enough into our karmas. Good habits in the short term may be bad karmas in the long run. That’s why we need to take care, cure, and cultivate our karmas without stopping our practice in sitting, stilling, and settling. While we are in karmas, we cannot see the true nature of them. So, we must constantly and concentratedly come to nirvana and awakening. 4/1/13
Becoming Buddha Beyond Boundaries
Good morning! On this sunny spring Sunday, we sit together with a lion, a horse, and a kitty also sitting on cushions. When we sit in serenity and stillness, we go beyond the boundaries and differences among us, all becoming buddhas together in one world. So, let us enjoy our best body, brain, and breathing forms and functions. 3/31/13 (family sitting)
Full Flower Festival
Good morning and happy Easter! Easter is the festival of the first full moon day after the spring equinox. Easter is Eoster, which some scholars say is Uśas, Dawn, the Indo-European goddess. It is the time of brightening and warming with the morning star and the dawning sun from the dark cold night. It is the transition from windy winter to sunny spring. So, all over the world people celebrate this time of the year in different names. Pesch(a) or Pesah is also from Uśas, the Passover from slavery suffering to limitless liberation. It is the birth of new things and the renewal from the old life. All kinds of flower start to bloom. So, we have flower festivals. We talked about the spring equinox, which is identified as equanimity, nirvana, the other shore. The Flower Festival is the Buddha’s birthday on April 8, a celebration under the cherry blossoms, which is celebrated as Vesak in the southern tradition. Already in Japan people are appreciating cherry blossoms with families and friends and food and drink, participating in “hanami” (花見: flower viewing) – here hana (花:flower), meaning cherry flowers. Cherry blossoms represent massive glorious blossoming and also massive grandiose falling – immediate evanescence of life – in wind and rain, and even without them, as if it is in their own nature. It shows naturalness, the natural flow of phenomena in impermanence, which has become the Japanese sense of aesthetic attitude and living way of “isagiyosa” (acceptance of the natural course and non- attachment) or “akirame” (clarification and giving up) endowed with abundant natural beauty together with brittleness, brevity, and the trainings and traditions of Buddhism penetrating through their cultures. Yesterday I watched an NHK TV program which featured the Cherry Festival in D.C., how the cherry trees were brought and how their blossoms have been appreciated for more than a hundred years. In 1885 Eliza Scidmore, an international journalist, came back from Japan and asked the U.S. Army Superintendents of the Office of Public Buildings and Grounds to plant cherry trees along the Potomac River. She continued to ask, in vain, for twenty four years, until in 1909 Helen Taft, the new first lady who had lived in Japan and also appreciated cherry blossoms, agreed to the idea. On January 6, two thousand cherry trees arrived in Washington, D.C. from Tokyo, as a token of friendship from the Japanese people to American people. These trees were found to be infested and diseased, so burned and destroyed. Soon, their goodwill determined to send three thousand twenty trees, which arrived on March 26, 1912 and were planted. Diana Parsell, an American writer, wanted to write a biography of Eliza Scidmore. Because many of Scidmore’s records had been destroyed, Parsell visited Japan to research her travels to archives, etc. While there she, too, appreciated cherry blossoms and people’s blessings. She found that Scidmore had joined a club for growing morning … Continue reading
