Ecuador 6: Week 2, The Oriente
In the jungle, eyes are watching everywhere. Our two guides often could spot the animals hidden between branches and leaves. They also explained plants and trees. Many forest plants are medicinal plants and are used for healing purposes. Ayahuasca, for example, is a vine translated from Quichua as “vine of the soul”. It is used by Shamans as a powerful spiritual drug. Ecuador 5: Week 2, The Oriente
The days and the nights in the jungle were fascinating. We listened to the songs of the birds, the thundering noise of the howling monkeys and the splashing of the water when a caiman was disappearing into the darkness of the lake. We walked muddy paths through dense vegetation and were gliding through narrow passages of wet lands with a canoe. All the time, silence was our most important companion. We discovered miracles of life. A grasshopper ready to jump A little lizard crawling from leaf to leaf A tiny green frog, frightened of the bright light A spider waiting patiently for the prey … Continue reading

Ecuador 4: Week 2, The Oriente
The jungle, a word coming from Sanskrit meaning “impenetrable” , is a place where the competition for light and nutrition is most intense. Only a thin layer of soil is fertile. Light hardly penetrates through the thick green foliage. Plants had to develop survival strategies. The interdependence between different species is a crucial factor for survival. A good example is the Ficus or Banyan Tree, one of the most important trees in the Rain Forest. The sweet fruits feed hundreds of animals – like toucans, monkeys, gibbons, bats. The Ficus, also called Strangler Fig, starts at the beginning of it’s growth as a seedling -which was eaten by a bird – high up on a branch of a tree. Here, the seedling gets light, rain and nutrition from leaf litter. Slowly, they develop roots which grow far down to the soil. A network of roots encircle the host tree. After awhile, the host tree is strangled by the roots. The Ficus is a canopy tree and can reach up to 148 feet. View down from a platform mounted in a fig tree Walter, our Quichuan guide with a machate The Walking Tree is another unique plant in the Rain Forest. This palm tree moves by developing roots where it finds light and nutrition and lets the roots die which are of no use anymore. … Continue reading

Ecuador, 2: Busride to Otavalo, Papallacta and other places
. For three days, we traveled with family and friends to interesting places around Quito. Reloj Del Sol, a huge sun dial – it is the most accurate in the world. At spring and fall equinox, the sun is perfectly over the equator line. Otavalo, a town in the Northern Highlands, is famous for its market. Even in Pre- Inca time, trading was flourishing. The Otavaleños are well known for their weavings. Indigenous woman in the traditional outfit: white blouse embroidered with flowers, long wool skirt, fachalina (head-cloth), woven belt, canvas sandals and strand of beads The colonial flair could still be felt in the Hacienda Pinsaqui, which was built in 1790. Beside being an agriculture estate, for several hundred years the Hacienda employed up to 1000 weavers for the production of textiles. Most of the textiles were exported to the United States. Now, the Hacienda is a hotel and a restaurant. In the afternoon, we visited the Hacienda Zuleta. This Hacienda is famous for its wildlife preserve. Bears and condors live in the mountainous area. We saw the … Continue reading

Experience in Equador
The main reason for travelIng to Ecuador was the wedding of my son. I stayed for four weeks. After one week of getting to know the Ecuadorian family, the friends of my son and daughter in law and the actual wedding celebration, I visited different parts of Ecuador – mainly the Amazon jungle and the Highlands. Like always, trekking and getting in direct contact with nature was my favorite part. I am very happy that I can share my experience with you, the experience of people coming together from all over the world celebrating life and the experience I had in this incredible beautiful Anden country. Week 1: Quito and surroundings Quito is a bustling city at an altitude of nearly 9000 feet. The old, historic town with the picturesque 17th century facades, the plazas and magnificent churches were reason to dedicate the old town as a “World Heritage Site.” Many indigenous people with their colorful ponchos and skirts and the typical hats can be seen on the streets in this area. Every Sunday, the Centro Histórico is closed to cars and open for bikers. At the end of the street you can see the Neo-gothic Basilica del Voto Nacional … Continue reading
