Manaslu and Tsum Valley, Day 11: Bihi – Namrung
Practice is about making this moment, each moment, the best of our time. In the morning, our porter Chandra is leaving us. He does not feel good and walks back to Jagat. Our path takes us through fairytale forests. Like a horde of wild horses, the water of the Budhi Gandaki River rushes down the valley. We are witnessing a powerful landslide on the other side of the valley. In the evening, we meet a Spanish expedition group in the place where we stay overnight. They plan to climb the Manaslu mountain. Walking chairs Chautaraa with baskets Path through fairytale forest Powerful tree Resting place for lunch with Kani in the background View along the path … Continue reading
Manaslu & Tsum Valley, Day 10: Lopka – Bihi
Showing no sign of soon dying, cicadas’ sound. Showing no sign of soon dying, squirrels’ stealing. I remember I posted these haikus (1st: Basho, 2nd: mine): http://missourizencenter.org/mzcherenow/?p=1110 In leaving Tsum Valley, the vegetation becomes lush again. Monkeys jump in trees, radiant, blue butterflies are surrounding us and the sound of uncountable cicadas is a constant companion. Women carrying baskets Prayer wheel in creek Another beautiful flower Hanging bridge Old hanging bridge soon to be replaced Rhods, Chandraman and Chandra (porters) waiting for us in front of Kani (entrance door to village) … Continue reading

Manaslu & Tsum Valley, Day 9: Lamagoan – Lopka
Sitting quietly, doing nothing. Spring comes and the grass grows by itself. Zenrin Kashi Due to bad weather, we do not continue our trail to Mu Gompa, which is located at the end of the valley, but return to the Manaslu circuit. On the way back, we meet the first foreigners – a small group of Australians who organized medical help for the population of Tsum Valley. Australian doctors come with helicopters from Kathmandu, medical supply is brought by donkeys. Manaslu & Tsum Valley, Day 8: Lamagaon
Heaven and earth come from the same root as myself. All things and I are one. 天地同根 萬物一體 Sêng-chao/Sõjõ (僧肇 384-414) Today we stay in Lamagaun and visit Piren Phu, the Pigeon Cave, where Milarepa, Tibet‘s most famous yogi and poet, meditated almost 1000 years ago. Except for one Lama, who lives here temporarily and has been here for three years already, the monastery is only used for ceremonies. In the afternoon, we visit Rachen Gompa, a monastery for nuns. Over 100 nuns live here, mostly children. Manaslu & Tsum Valley, Day 7: Dumje – Lamagaon
We should continue our practice forever. How we continue our practice forever is to be involved in what we are doing right now. Shunryu Suzuki Roshi In steep spirals, the path leads up to the high mountain valley. For hours we do not meet anybody. Since the Chinese occupation of Tibet in 1951 – 60 years ago – the trading routes to Tibet are basically closed. Manaslu and Tsum Valley, Day 6: Lopka – Dumje
Speech is blasphemy, silence a lie Above speech and silence there is a way out. I – Tuan (Age of Zen) Tsum Valley is one of eight sacred valleys in Tibetan Buddhism. It is called beyul kyimolug, hidden valley or oasis of peace. In this sacred place it is forbidden to kill an animal. Milarepa and Guru Rimpoche once stayed and meditated here. A thirty day pilgrimage path is leading through this valley. People are of Tibetan origin and speak Tibetan. Crossing Syar Khola Path through Rhododendron forest. Trees are overgrown with farn, moss and orchids. Manaslu & Tsum Valley, Day 5 Jagat – Lopka
Like the clear stillness of autumn water, pure and without activity, in its tranquil depth are no destructions. Such a one is called a man of Tao, also a man who has nothing further to do. Man of Tao In Jagat we hire an additional porter. On the way up the Budhi Gandanki Gorge we pass a Shankri stone. In front of this shrine, a Shankri had just recently performed a healing ritual. In this area, people go to shamans for healing. There are no medical doctors available. After lunch, we leave the Manaslu circuit and enter Tsum Valley. Chandra arguing with his wife in front of a chautaraa (resting wall for porters) View up the Budhi Gandanki River Walking the path Shankri stone with cow dung, egg shells and other unknown items Refreshing Entering Tsum Valley: … Continue reading

Manaslu & Tsum Valley, Day 4: Tatopani – Jagat
Alas, the moon in the window was not taken away Ryokan With the change of altitude, the vegetation changes. Instead of rice and millet fields, we are passing fields of already harvested corn. Tibetan prayer flags are the first signs that people are followers of Tibetan Buddhism. In Jagat, we see the first Chorten, the Tibetan version of a stupa. We are at an altitude of over 4000 feet. Path in the rain Sharing the path Another view up the Budhi Gandaki River Intimacy Three year old child washing dishes Crossing a hanging bridge over the Budhi Gandaki River Two children playing with a tiny bird in Jagat Little bird with child (Text … Continue reading
