Good morning! Still sittings make us holy (wholly wholesome) and harmonious. I forwarded the speech Noam Chomsky gave at Riverside Church on January 5th at the 20th anniversary celebration of Democracy Now! to many groups and individuals. He … Continue reading

Wholly Wholesome Way World
Good morning! We have a warm winter now with a window opened. Yesterday it was over 70. This is part of global warming. The COP21 had some success in tackling this. Paris had this meeting and a terror attack, so the French president said that these are the two biggest problems in the world. More imminent and devastating would be the nuclear holocaust and radiation disasters that could accompany natural or human disasters, like terrorism. A news report yesterday said that West Lake, the nuclear waste site in St. Louis, may become a Fukushima with its underground fire 1,000 feet away.1 Malala Yousafiai, the youngest Nobel prize winner, said, “With guns, you can kill terrorists, with education you can kill terrorism.” We could say, “With meditation you can terminate terror.” All the problems and sufferings we have now with the sixth man- made mass extinction as well as the inevitable eternal/universal sufferings of birth, sickness, aging, death, loss, separation, meeting with the hated – in short, the rampant raging of the five aggregates – come from the triple poisons of desire, divisiveness, and the delusion of ego, which ultimately come from karmas. So, the Buddha at around this time of year, twenty five centuries ago, for the first time in the history, found that all living beings are karma-heirs, -owners, -machines, -refuged, and provided us with the practical way to still karmas in sitting, settling in unconditioned peace (nirvana, lit. no-wind of karmas), and attaining unsurpassed awakening (bodhi) of the Dharma of dependent co-origination/cessation. We can witness nirvana or the supra-mundane (loka-uttara), and bodhi by constant cultivation of sitting and seeing the Dharma (Norm) of all dharmas (forms), not by walking, as the Buddha said. The holy (wholly wholesome) truth, justice, and way must come from nirvana and bodhi, beyond sinful (separate sick) truth, justice, and way – thus the Four Holy Truths (cattāri-ariya-saccāni) and the Eightfold Holy Ways (aṭṭhaṅgika-ariya-magga). Selfish truth, justice, and way are not “wholly wholesome.” Right view, thinking, speaking, acting, livelihood, mindfulness, striving, and concentration must be truthful (sacca, satya)2 and holy, based on nirvana and bodhi. So, the Buddha said, “Enmity is never appeased by enmity,” and “Conquer one-self not thousands in wars.”3 … Continue reading
Renouncing Home, Home Country, Karma Kinetics
Good morning! We seem to taste the early fall weather after some rain. Especially after our sittings and service, we have now a quiet, cool, calm, and clear world. Last night I watched an award-winning film titled The Burmese Harp. The story runs like this: Private Mizushima played the harp to accompany a Japanese soldier group fleeing Burma to Thailand, a no war zone, led by Captain Inoue who conducted their chorus on the way. One night while they were singing Home Sweet Home in a village, they were surrounded by British soldiers, who instead of raiding them, joined their chorus. They were told that WWII had ended and so they surrendered. Mizushima was dispatched to another fighting Japanese group to tell them the war had ended and that they also should surrender. He was unable to convince them in the time allotted, and when he tried to request additional time using an improvised white flag, he was misunderstood by the group, who had decided to fight to the end, and knocked unconscious by them. He was the only survivor of the ensuing attack, and he was saved by a monk, whom he robbed of his robe. He barely reached Mudon, where his group was detained, saved by that robe (food, shelter, etc.). On the way he saw many corpses and was determined to stay there to burn and bury them. He found a red ruby, which villagers, who first simply watched his efforts to bury and then helped him, told him is spirit. At the funeral procession he carried the Japanese style white cloth cover of a cinerary urn. Inoue found the ruby in it when he was taken to the charnel house to remove the urns. His group wanted him to return to Japan with them and they taught a true parrot to say, “Mizushima, let’s go back to Japan together.” Inside the Buddha’s Nirvana statue, Mizushima played the harp to accompany his group singing The Moon over the Ruined Castle outside. Despite their efforts to get in he remained, having locked himself inside. With only three days remain- ing before they were to leave for Japan, they started to sing aloud so that he might come back to join them. They asked the old sales lady to give him the parrot they had taught to speak. The day before they were to leave, he showed up beyond the barbed wire fences … Continue reading
From Sinful Separation, Samsara, Suffering to Holy Harmony, Health, Happiness
Good morning! We can wholly enjoy a beautiful spring Sunday morning with a lot of flowers, green leaves, birds, and animals after sittings and service. We have, however, an ugly secular world with wars, terrorism, global warming, mass extinction, etc. due to human karmas with craving, anger, and delusion for matter, power, and ego. Science and technology simply strengthen this tendency toward imminent nuclear holocaust and eventual total annihilation. The fundamental reason for this tragedy is in the fateful following of our karmas – selfish genes and sinful (separating) gadgets. Selfish sectionalism speeds up with scale and synergy. Mankind is supreme in evolutionary history in this. The Buddha foresaw the destruction of the world due to selfish karmas and provided the method to still them and see paramount truth in the supramundane realm of nirvana, unconditioned peace. The Four Holy Truths tell us the truth or reality of suffering, origin (craving – karma), cessation (nirvana – a-karma), and path (the Eightfold Holy Path). The Fourfold Application or Striving are concrete ways to decrease and stop bad karmas, and to start and increase good karmas. The unique point of the Awakened Way lies in nirvana and the concrete way called samādhi limbs (striving-mindfulness-samādhi), the last part of the Eightfold Holy Path. The Awakened Way is to be awakened from karma realms or the Six Paths, like waking up from dreadful dreams. Only stilling karmas can lead to nirvana wherein one can wake up from karma realms or samsara suffering. It is crucial for each and every one of us to practice sitting, stilling karmas, and seeing Cessation and the Dharma of Dependent Origination to truly avoid samsara suffering and appreciate holy truth, goodness, beauty, and peace. 5/3/15

Ambrosia, Amrita (Immortality) with Wholly Wholesome Way World
Good morning! We have now abundant flowers around us, inside and out. The Buddha found the truth that all living beings are karma-heirs, -owners, -machines, and -refuged and the way to go beyond karmas for the first time in the history of life twenty five centuries ago. This is to sit, still karmas, see the truth, and save all beings from samsara suffering through the Six Paths. Most of living beings, however, remain in their karmas, not having the opportunity to encounter the Awakened Way and not having sufficient striving to realize it. Dogen said, “Even though this Dharma is abundantly endowed to everyone, there is no development without cultivation and there is no attainment without witnessing.” We are in sesshin, touching the heart (接心) or embracing it (摂心), today. When we sit wholeheartedly, we can touch and embrace it. Thus, we can attain the wholly wholesome way, our head/heart/hara in friendly, free, and full function and the wholly wholesome world in harmony, health, and happiness. We have been reading the Dhammapada in our Dharma Study class and came across the following verse recently – nectar (rasa) is also essence, thus can be ambrosia (amrita, immortality), enjoyed without damaging the world: Just as a bee leaves the flower, not hurting the color or fragrance, Having taken the nectar, so should a thoughtful one walk in a village. The Dhammapada, 49 4/26/15 Note 1. We as karma machines transmigrate through the Six Paths of hell beings, hungry ghosts, beastly beings, fighting devils, human beings, and celestial beings with suffering (duk-kha, wrong-going, dis-satisfaction). 2. Rasa means juice and taste in general (object of tongue) and also essential taste in arts (music, dance, literature, etc.). … Continue reading
