Foxy Fixed Fate or Free Full Function
Good morning! It is bright and brisk with the Sunday sunlight reflecting on white snow and the temperature going down to single digits. We have sesshin today. Sesshin (摂心・接心) means embracing and touching the heart/mind. Our mind/hearts are usually straying like kites with their strings cut much less contacted. We talked about the 500 fox lives due to the error of “not falling into the Dharma of Dependent Origination.” All living beings have been living a billion fox lives in that law. No one can escape from it and must receive its retributions – presidents and prime ministers with greater responsibilities. Foxes are believed to transform their figures to deceive humans. All living beings, specifically specially evolved humans, transform their figures as beastly beings, hungry ghosts, fighting devils, hell beings, and celestial beings, constantly and continuously by their karmas. Only when we sit and still our physical, verbal and mental karmas, can we see and serve dharmas as they are. Only when we witness nirvana, can we awaken to the Dharma freed from fox lives and fully function as buddhas. Sesshin is essential and endless effort in this purifying and purity path. It all depends on our practice of this path, whether the world is doomed to destruction in suffering, in sanguine strife in the ocean of tears and blood, or saved in bliss in wholly wholesomeness in limitless life, light, liberation, and love. Awaken from the dreadful dreams of foxy cries in the tiger skin! 2/22/15

From Ablazed World to Awakened World
Good morning! The days are getting longer and warmer. This week’s issue of Time Magazine featured longevity. Its cover showed a baby’s picture with the caption “This baby could live to be 142 YEARS OLD: Dispatches From the Frontiers of Longevity.” The section GET YOUR HEAD IN THE GAME, with a picture of a baby in half lotus, with a juzu (rosary), talks mostly about mindfulness, meditation, relaxation, and optimism. The portion “Putting Out Fires” says that meditation reduces inflammatory cytokines, revitalizes genes, Telomere gene and gray matter. Nirvana (nibbāṇa) is almost universally believed to mean “putting out fire,” following the traditional interpretation, taking the prefix nir as “out.” The often used stock phrase “ni-vāte padīpa” (lamp in no-wind) clearly illustrates the nirvana state of light (awakening) in no karma wind blowing. The magazine feature toward its end notes that not only longevity but also lifestyle is important. Nirvana is the key to a paradigm shift of lifestyle, civilization system, ecology sanity, and life system sanctity into crucial cultivation and culture with wholly wholesome way and world. Our cold-blooded world on fire, of stresses and sufferings with small, short-sighted sinful karmas blown into hungry ghosts, fighting devils, and hell beings, must shift to a warm-hearted world in holy harmony, health, and happiness in limitless light, liberation, love and life. 2/15/15

Awakened or Adumbrated
Good morning! We are now officially in spring, since February 4, so it is brighter and warmer now. Especially after sittings and service we feel brighter and warmer in harmony and happiness. Wholly wholesomeness depends on our practice in truth and peace. Even being born, we may become wolves or awakened ones depending on environment, education, effort, etc. Dr. Suzuki often told the story of girls fostered by wolves, and taught parents not to make their children wolves. Villagers in the suburbs of Kolkota (Calcutta) found monsters like wolves with long hair, glaring eyes, etc. in the forest, and caught them. They ran on all fours, could see in the darkness and smell meat more than 200 feet away, howled with other wolves at certain times at night, and were like and liked animals more than human children even after they were caught and put into an orphanage. They were discarded by their parents and saved and raised by wolves. They seemed to be girls of two and seven when they were found. The younger one was named A-mala and the older one Ka-mala. Amala died one year later, but the older one survived eight more years. Kamala could not understand the death of Amala for a day, but she shed streaks of tears, noticing no more movement in her, after she tried to move her, open her eyes, etc. Kamala gradually adjusted to the human world and behavior, but she never stopped howling with other wolves. Recently I watched an NHK program titled Science for Everyone, where they discussed the discovery of the mechanism of weather-related pains (pains in bad weather) and our heart ability. They found that weather pains are caused by a disturbance in the nucleus accumbens (NAcc) in the inner ear. It excites air pressure sensor cells, which disturbs the lymph, which contradicts the visual sense, whose perplexity causes sympathetic nerves to excite the pain nerves, causing pain and the nerves around the capillaries to cause swelling. Another aspect of pain is heart ability. The subject endures up to the endurable amount of electric shock. Then, he is given a special ball made of special material from South America to block the electric shock on his palm. He could then endure up to the maximum test point, where ordinary people cannot endure. The ball was, in fact, nothing but an ordinary rubber ball. The relationship between the heart and … Continue reading

Ending Endless Enmities
Good morning! Now it is February. Time flies! Life empties! Did you hear about a Japanese journalist who was decapitated by ISIS members? It is a detestable savagery. They warned the Japanese Prime Minister that any Japanese anywhere is now in danger because of his participation in the Voluntaries, to destroy them. It is a horrendous and ominous thing, but we must know why it happened. The Japanese have been considered a peace loving people, with its Peace Constitution renouncing wars and weaponry after their atomic bomb experience of 70 years. Prime Minister Abe wanted to change that history with revisionist views and bellicose venting to work with allies anywhere in the world. He visited the Middle East to give aid to countries to contain ISIS. We must mentally orient to the source (yoniso manasi-kāra) – why it came out – to take revenge against the Iraq War allies! The Buddha said: “Abused me, hurt me, conquered me, robbed me.” For those who hold a grudge, enmity is never appeased. Dhp. 3 … Continue reading
Good morning! After our sittings and service, we feel a still, serene, and satisfied Sunday morning, even with rather severe summer weather. I have been weeding and easing the steep slope easement and clearing creepers covering trees at the farthest back yard and at the fence there. Grass-like weeds and ordinary- looking trees would also cover and choke grass and trees. Even we cut them, they grow bigger and broader again and again, unless we clear and cleanse them from their roots. Still, winds and wings may bring their seeds from somewhere else so long as there is the fertile soil for them to ground and grow. Bad karmas have the chances to ground, grow, cover and choke green grass and tall trees from free, full functions for flourishing. The Five Coverings and the Four Fluxes are cleared and cleansed by sitting and stilling karmas as shown in the Four Zen (Jhāna) Stages. Formations (saṅkhāra: past, present physical, verbal, and mental karmas) create roots of nescience and craving, causing samsara and suffering as seen in the Twelvefold Dependent Origination. People do not know karmas, much less are not able to cope with them, as in the case of Ferguson shooting, etc. We must constantly care and cure ourselves by cutting, clearing, and cleansing karma coverings and fluxes. Ryokan said that it would be easier to commit suicide than continue practice. Only constant practice makes perfect wholly wholesome way world. 8/24/14 Note: Regarding the Four Zen Stages and the Twelvefold Dependent origination, please refer to the Download Documents in this website. … Continue reading

Himalaya Karmalaya
Good morning! Now we see the stored snow melted away, the wintry wind gone, and the freezing chill crept away with the brighter sunlight and the longer daytime. Himalaya is the snow (hima) stored (ālaya) mountain, once under the sea, but later raised by pressures, so now no plants can bud, bloom, or bear fruit. Our store (ālaya) consciousness, once under no storage, later came to store by pressures, and now no purity can bud, bloom, or bear fruit, free and full. Store consciousness is the result of stored karmas (heredity, habits), a result of poisons (delusion, desire, divisiveness) and now not known nor negated. Sciences see that we can control gene functions to change our ‘nature’ to ‘nurture.’ The Buddha sat, stopped karma-ālaya, and saw nirvana and bodhi. Anyone can sit, stop karma-ālaya, and see the selfless, supramundane truth and taste amrita, ambrosia of immortality, in nirvana and bodhi-awakening. We fail to change our instincts and institutions unless we stop karma-ālaya, resulting in delusion, bondage, discrimination, exploitation, and destruction. Well-being (Su-gata) is an epithet of the Buddha, who dedicated his whole being for his whole life to fostering the well-being of all beings altogether. Fortunate One (Bhaga-vān, lit. Luck-abound) is another epithet of him, who was fortunate and who makes all fortunate, not a simple beggar (vagabond). 2/23/14 Note: The Ten names of the Buddha: 1. Tathā-gata (Thus-being, being in Thusness) 2. Arhat (The Worthy One to be said “pure career carried out, duty done, no more return to this state – worldliness.”) 3. Sammā-sambuddha (The Rightly Completely Awakened) … Continue reading

Cloud-covered or Cloud-cleared
Good morning! Last night we still could have seen the round moon. The full moon represents the Buddha heart/mind -perfectly round, brilliant, beautiful, clear, and calm. However the clouds covered it to make the world dark, dull, and dangerous. When our heart/minds are covered by clouds of karma with the triple poisons of delusion, desire, and divisiveness, they make the world dark, dull, and dangerous, and into the difficult destinies (du-gati) of hell beings, hungry ghosts, and beasts or fighting devils. To prevent them the Awakened Way provides the triple learning of morality, concentration, and prognosis, which make the world brilliant, bright, and beautiful, and into the delightful destinies (su-gati) of the triple treasures of the Delighted (Su-gata), Dharma, and Dharma Community (Saṅgha). Aṅglimālā, who had once worn a finger-necklace made of finger bones taken from his murdered victims, made the following poem telling that one could be like the moon cleared from the clouds of karma, if one completely changes one’s heart/mind and enters into the supramundane realm. The one formerly drunken, But later not drunken, Illuminates this world like The moon cleared from clouds. The one who formerly did vice, But later repented with virtue, Illuminates this world like The moon cleared from clouds. The one striving in the Awakened Way, Even if still a young mendicant, Illuminates this world like The moon cleared from clouds. … Continue reading

Good morning! Early risers can drive straight shortcuts through winding highways, without other drivers and with good perspective. Everyday drivers know that straight shortcuts may have ups and downs, including other drivers without good views. Expert fliers can reach the goal with perfect perspective and priority without other drivers and obstacles – nirvana and bodhi (awakening). Late drivers course through winding ways in jammed traffic, meandering at slow speed. So many minds drive so many karma-cars, but there are only two car kinds or gaining goals: fortune and fame. Me-ism drives materialism and militarism, manipulated by money-ism. Mankind makes misfortunes in egoistic entity, economic entrapment, and ecological extinction. Karma cars, dividing and driving the unified universal Dharma Dhātu (Root, Realm), run politics, economies, societies, and civilizations into a runaway course of extermination, exploitation, exclusion, and extinction with artificial unilateral pyramidal systems. One Dharma Dhātu, like a limitless ocean, comes first, not ego or economy, like a limited bubble. The Dharma of Dependent Origination of the Dharma Dhātu dictates the total perspective and top priority, deciding them as wholly wholesome ecology, not ego or economy. We must sit, stop karmas, and see limitless liberation, life, light, and love, like the limitless windless sky, waveless sea, bright stars, and warm sun. 12/15/13
Stopping, Surpassing Samsara Suffering
Good morning! It is a beautiful autumn Sunday morning with sittings and service, the sounds of birds flapping and flying. It is the best season, just after equinox with equal day and night, a cool and clear atmosphere. Yesterday I posted Dogen’s poem on one mind treading on the Six Paths or transmigrating through them –hell beings path/way/passage/destiny/career, etc. at our website: 1. Hell being path/destiny (niraya-gati) 2. Beastly being path/destiny (tiracchānayoni-gati) 3. Ghostly being path/destiny (pittivisaya-gati) 4. Devilish being path/destiny (asura-gati) 5. Human being path/destiny (manussa-gati) 6. Celestial being path/destiny (deva-gati) Because of our karmas, we appropriate and identify the body as “I” and act as (if) “an independent, eternal being.” This is the common convention, to get into self- centeredness and self-assertion, creating the triple poisons. This is the fundamental delusion or nescience (non-witness of nirvana/bodhi, unconditioned peace/unsurpassed awakening), evolved by karmas (actions, habits, heredity, etc., even called the selfish gene) for desire/divisiveness. The triple poisons lead to the Six Paths with limitless varieties, which is called samsara, and involves suffering due to impermanence (no self-same) and dissatisfaction (no self-sovereign) of dependently originated phenomena. This has been the case for all beings in all places and at all times, because they are karma heirs, karma relatives, karma machines, in short, karma slaves, not knowing how and thus not acting to put an end to such state. The Buddha could know and act the right way to solve such a slave state in samsara suffering for the first time in the history of living beings. He sat, stopped karmas, saw the dharma of dependent origination and solved suchness. He solved the problem of nature and nurture, which Dr. Suzuki called the law of heredity and the law of ability, from the very root of life with body, mind, and the world in the dharma of dependent origination. … Continue reading

Supramundane Serenity and Satisfaction
Good morning! Our wisteria flowers have bloomed. “Flowers blooming, the world has arisen.” The world arising, flowers bloom. Sitting is settling, with selfless serenity and satisfaction, in the wholly wholesome supra-mundane world. Sitting is stopping the self sense and strife, the source of sufferings for all sentient beings in this super mundane world. 4/25/13 National Geographic _____________________________________________________ KARMA and DHARMA Good evening! I saw wisteria blooming which I planted recently in my garden. There is another one which has never bloomed for decades. Whether blooming or not blooming depends on the transmitted dharmas, environmental, and one’s own karmas. The nirvana flower and the bodhi (awakening) fruit depend on the transmitted dharma, social karma, environmental dharma, and one’s own karma. So, let us make good karmas with the good dharma of Buddha Mind Seal to bloom and bear fruit like the maņi in the lotus flower. 4/25/13 Note: Maņi is gem, crystal, etc. It may be a dewdrop in the lotus flower, representing “the clear crystal ball” (ikka-myōju, 一顆明珠, a ball of clear crystal, cf.
