Thirty casual poems at my grass hut (4):
How could they know
The very true Way
Who have never ridden
On four horse carriages?
Sōan-no gū-ei sanjisshu (4):
Yotsu-no uma
Yotsu-no kuruma-ni
Noranu-hito
Makoto-no michi-wo
Ikade shira-mashi
草庵之偶詠三十首 (4):
駟の馬
四つの車に
乗らぬ人
真の道を
いかで知らまし
Note: The Four Horse Carriage seems to mean the Fourfold Holy Truth (used to be
know as Fourfold Noble Truth, but ariya/arya is hagia/holy, thus Holy is better way
to render it) which leads to the True Way (Awakened Way with unconditioned peace
and unsurpassed complete right awakening). “Four” horses in other versions are
“three,” in which case “three” seem to mean the triple treasures of Buddha, Dharma,
and Sangha, which lead to the True Way.
