Law Is Life: Five Precepts

Law (of all phenomena, the Dharma of all dharmas, Dependent Co-origination) is the truth/ethic of life, and the loss of it is loss of life. If one ignores it, one commits sin, separated and sunken from all. If one kills one person, one kills all of humanity, the Quran says. If one kills hundreds and thousands, one is a criminal against all. Better than conquering thousands upon thousands is conquering one self, who is the supreme of war conquerors, the Buddha said.

The Buddha prescribed the Five Precepts of no killing, stealing, lying, committing sexual misconduct, and intoxicants. These Five Precepts are essential to life, materials, societies, gender-generation, and wakefulness. They became the principles of the Global Ethic issued by the Parliament of the World’s Religions in 1993 in Chicago. If we observe it, there will be no war, nuke holocaust, global warming, militarism, mass extinction, pollution, poverty, power politics, etc.

All living beings are four billion years old, continuing life forms and functions since life started, limitlessly related and relative. No one has the right to kill them out of ignorance and arrogance, depending on the delusion of ego, national ego, etc., which are fictions of human karma conventions. Heroes in the past will be regarded as hegemons or Hitlers of hubris in the future. Humans in awakening and action will overcome the holocaust of war, nukes, destruction of eco, etc.

Religion means reunion with holiness (wholly wholesomeness). The history of it shows the advancement from that of clans, tribes, and nations to global and universal; from the worship of nature, nature deities, and anthropomorphic gods to abstract principles; from local to universal; from barbaric practices to refined ones, etc. More universal religions share the ideal figure of friend (Mitra, Mithra, Maitreya, Messiah, et al.) meeting with the common proverb, rational thinking.

Notes:

Dharma means 1. form (from d-harm: phenomenon) and 2. norm (from d-h-arm: norm: law operating through phenomena: ethic), and 3. the teaching of the law of all phenomena, that is, Dependent Co-origination (originally awakened on the origination of perception/consciousness depending on the sense organs and objects, but later applied to all phenomena, cf. note 5). This law is similar to the law of causality, now used by sciences, but deeper and wider, applied beyond objects – more on subjects and symbols – ideas, etc.).

“The Dharma (Norm/Law/Truth/Ethic) of all dharmas (forms/phenomena/ truths/ethics)” is Dependent Co-origination, i.e., all phenomena are interdependently co-originated on limitless causes and conditions (similar to the Law of Causality, but deeper and wider – beyond conventions, conceptions, objects, etc.). This means that we are interrelated with other beings (other species, elements, stars, etc.), and relatives to each other, and that we must therefore live together harmoniously and strive to make a wholly wholesome world to become harmonious, health, and happy. Dharma is typically translated as law, but the meaning is wider. All dharmas mean all phenomena (things, persons, etc.) and the Dharma of all dharmas means the truth/ethic operating in them, which can be regarded as the total universe or the Dharma world. The relation between them can be regarded as that between each crystal ball (each individual, microcosm, small life, bubble) and its entirety (total universe, macrocosm, great life, ocean). A bubble can’t ignore the ocean from ego-view, ego-interest, or ego-pride, and if it does ignore it, it is burst and destroyed. But if it learns from and follows the ocean, it can grow great and become the ocean itself. Life is enlivened, learned, and perfected by the Dharma, not the other way around.

The Quran (5:32) says “Whoever kills one person unless it be for murder or spreading corruption, it shall as if he killed whole of humanity.”

“Better than conquering thousands upon thousands is conquering one self. That is the supreme of war conquerors.” The Dhammapada 103

Life is interdependently co-originating on limitless elements and energies for four billion years, restoring and resuming forms and functions, developing and evolving through genes and generations, communicating and controlling among particles and participants in space and time. All are related and relative, even if senses and symbolisms suppose separate and subsume sovereign. All are in the universal law of Dependent Co-origination and cannot escape from it in causes and conditions in the karma kinetics as illustrated in the Indra-net.

The solution of the global problematique, interrelated global problems such as global warming, mass extinction, nationalism, war, nuke, dictatorship, dogma, discrimination, prolusion, poverty, requires the global ethic (issued by the Parliament of the World’s Religions in Chicago in 1993 with more than seven thousand people from all religions and from all over the world attending), which is based on the Five Precepts (and the fundamental common elements in the Ten Precepts, the Ten Commandments, etc.).

Religion derives from Latin religare (reunion). Religion is, thus, to reunite with holiness (wholly wholesomeness, cf. Rudolf Otto’s definition of religion as the Holy) from sin (=separation, separated sick, cf. a-sun-der, sundry).

To reunite with the holiness of the limitless ocean of life from being a separated small bubble or foam of ego or group ego is the goal of anyone or a universal religion, where one lives as a true friend in need of all, as expressed in Mitra, Mithra, Metteya, Maitreya, Mazda, Massiah, etc., and who lives in limitless life, light, liberation, and love.

Ancient people worshipped awe-inspiring natural things like thunder, the sun (springing, scorching, etc.), mountains, the ocean, rocks, etc., which were later regarded as deities (deva, dyau, Deus, Zeus: shining, etc.), then anthropomorphic entities (dyau-pitṛ, Ju-piter: Father God, etc.). In the West, this trend became the monotheistic traditions (Judaism, Christianity, Islam). In the East, the trend became more natural elements or principles (Brahman in the Veda-Hinduism, Dharma in Buddhism, Jen in Confucianism, Dao in Daoism, etc.). The former has the potter (creating pots) type creation theory and the latter has the egg (hatching into a chick, Dao developing into myriad things, Dharma operating throughout the universe) type one.

法は命：五戒

（諸法の法：縁起、一切現象の）法は命の真理/倫理であり、その喪失は命の喪失である。人がそれを無視するなら、罪を犯し一切から離れ沈む。人が一人を殺すなら、一切人間を殺す、とクルアーンは言う。戦場で何千人を勝つよりも一己に克つのが良い、それが至上の戦勝者である、とブッダは言った。

不殺、不盗、不偽、不邪淫、不飲酒の誤解を定めた。これら五戒は生命、物資、社会、性・世代、覚醒に必須である。これらは地球倫理の諸原理として1993年シカゴで世界宗教会議により発せられた。私達がこれをまもれば戦争、核ホロコースト、地球己檀家、軍事主義、大量絶滅、汚染、貧困、力の政策等が無くなる。

一切生物は生命誕生以来形態と機能を継続し、無限に関連し相対して、40億歳である。誰も人間の業の習俗による仮構である我、我国などの迷妄に基づいて、無知と傲慢からそれらを殺す権利はない。過去の英雄は未来には驕慢の覇者あるいはヒトラーと見做されるだろう。覚醒と活動の人間は戦争、核、生態系破壊等のホロコーストを乗り越えるだろう。

宗教は聖（全体健全）との再結合を意味する。その歴史は氏族、部族、国家の宗教から地球的、普遍的なものへ、自然、自然神格、擬人神から抽象的原理へ、地方的なものから普遍的なものへ、野蛮な実践から洗練されたもの等へとの前進を示している。より普遍的な諸宗教は一般の諺や合理的思考に叶い友人（ミトラ、ミスラ、ミロク、メシア等）の理想の姿を共有している。

註：

法（dharma）は形態（form： d-harmより: 現象：真理)、２．規則（norm： d-h-armより:現象中の規則：倫理)、３．諸法の法、縁起（元来は感覚器官と感覚対象に依る知覚・意識の発生に覚醒したが後に一切現象に適用されたもの。註5参照）。この法則は、現今諸科学に用いられる、因果律と同様であるが、もっと深く広い－客体を越えて主体と観念などの象徴に適用される。

2. 「諸法（dharma: form/phenomena/truth/ethic）の法（Dharma: Norm/Law/Truth/Ethic）」は縁起、即ち、一切現象は無量の原因と条件により因縁生起するということである。これは、私達、人間、は他の存在（他種、元素、星など）と相関し互いに相対であり、だから、共に調和して生き、調和的、健康、幸福になる為に全体健全な世界を作らなければならないということを意味する。Dharmaは通常法（法律・法則の意）と訳されるが、その意味はもっと広い。諸法とは一切の現象（個物・個人など）を指し、諸法の法とはそこに働いている真理・倫理のことであり法界・宇宙全体と言っても良い。その関係は帝釈網の個々の水晶（小世界・小宇宙・小生命・泡）と全体（全世界・大宇宙・大生命・海）と言っても良い。泡が我見・我利・我慢で海を無視できず、無視するようなことがあれば破裂・破滅するし、海に学び従えば大きくなり一致する。法に生かされれ習い完成する命であり、逆ではない（法：真理倫理を無視すれば命は成り立たず破滅のみ）

3. クルアーンは「殺人や腐敗に対するものでない場合、一人をころすことは全人間を殺すようなものだ。」と言っている。

5. 命は四十億年にわたり無限の要素とエネルギーに依存して共生起しており、形態と機能を復元し再生し、遺伝子と世代を通して発展し新化し、時空に諸元素と諸参加者で通信し調整している。感覚や抽象は分離を想像し主宰収容しても、一切は関連し相対している。一切は縁起の普遍法の中にあり帝釈網に例示されるように業活動の内に原因と条件の中にあり、それを離れることは出来ない。

6. 地球問題群、地球温暖化、大量絶滅、国家主義、戦争、核、ドクサイ、独断、差別、汚染、貧困の様な相互関連した地球諸問題、は（1993年シカゴで世界中から諸宗教の七千人を超える人々が集まった世界宗教会議により発出された）地球倫理を必要としますが、これは五戒（と仏教他の十戒の基本的共通要素）に基づいている。

7. Religion(宗教）はラテン語religare (再結合)に由来します。だから、宗教は罪（sin = 分離、分離病患, cf. a-sun-der, sundry)から聖（holiness = wholly wholesomeness 全体健全、参照 Rudolf Ottoの宗教の定義：the Holy）に再結合することである。

8. エゴや集団エゴの分離狭小の泡沫あるいは泡群から無限の命の大洋に再結合することは誰もあるいは普遍宗教の目標です、そこでは無量寿、無量光、無量解放、無量愛を生きる友・友情（Mitra, Mithra, Metteya, Maitreya, Mazda, Massiah）で表される一切の必要の時の真の友として生きるのである。

9. 昔の人々は雷、日（芽吹き、干上がらせるなど）、山、大洋、岩などの畏怖させる自然物を崇拝し、それらは後に神格（deva, dyau, Deus, Zeus: shining, etc）、更に擬人化された実体（dyau-pitṛ, Ju-piter: Father God, etc.）として崇拝した。西方ではこの傾向は一神教の伝統（ユダヤ教、キリスト教、イスラーム）持つことになった。東方ではもっと自然な元素や原理となった（ヴェーダ‐ヒンドゥー教のブラフマン、仏教の法、儒教の仁、道教の道など）。前者は陶工（壺作り）型創造説となり後者は卵（雛になる、道が万物になり、法が宇宙に働く）型を持っている。
