Wishing Wholly Wholesome Way World
Good morning and Happy New Year! Have you made your New Year’s resolutions? I have resolved to do the most important thing first. What is the most important thing? That is the life-death matter. The Buddha was awakened to the truth of it as karma-kinetics and solved its suffering by stilling karma, settling in nirvana beyond karma, and striving wakefully in the supra-mundane truth. I am reading the work Smiling Zen by Toru Matsumoto. When leaving Taiwan after WWII, he faced the problem of selecting only his personal effects to take to Japan. He spent days worrying about leaving six truck loads of books, some of them rare ones left by his father. This was solved suddenly, when he thought of his death. So, he took with him only one book – the Shoshikan. The Shoshikan (Small Version Calming-Visioning: Samatha-Vipassanâ) is a compilation of lectures given by Tendai Daishi, and it is the commentary on this work, delivered by Matsumoto in a series of NHK (Japan Broadcasting Association) broadcasts and later transcribed, that I am currently reading. Calming-visioning leads anyone to nirvana-bodhi (awakening), making every day a good day as buddhas (awakened ones). The Buddhist Paths are said to be composed of 37 limbs, but they are the sum of the Eightfold Holy Way, Seven Awakening Limbs, etc., so the basic items are the Triple Learning of Sîla, Smâdhi, and Paññâ (Morality, Concentration, Prognosis). Right livelihood, donation, and patience were added for lay practitioners. Donation is the first step to open up small egos, which leads to the Wholly Wholesome Way World. 1/4/15 … Continue reading

Wholly Wholesome Way World
Good morning! We have now a still, serene summer Sunday after sitting. We can see the beautiful sun, sky, lush leaves, abundant flowers, fruits, and hear birds singing. As we cultivate, we verify. As we seed, we reap. Weeds and vines thrive and squirrels and rabbits are also rampant. Grape-like vines cover hibiscus trees and rabbits cut morning glory, even dug and eat the lily roots planted for the Buddha. All these seem natural, but they have come from karmas. Karmas cut holy harmony and create separated suffering. Short-sights and short-circuits may serve for selfish profits, but harm holy happiness. Holiness is sometimes added as the fourth element to truth, goodness, and beauty – corresponding to intellect, volition, and emotion – but should come first to make they truly holy – wholly wholesome – way world. For this purpose we must sit, stop karmas, and see the dharmas in the holy (wholly wholesome) perspective, proportion, and priority. We have abundant flowers and fruits, even if squirrels and rabbits ravage. These small animals can’t climb lattice-laden grapes and pears or cross over fences. Humans must caution their small, separated, selfish truth, goodness, and beauty – sciences, technologies, politics, economics, arts, and arms. 7/20/14 … Continue reading

Wholly Wholesome Way World
Good morning! Did you see the full moon last night? The full moon represents the bright, beautiful Buddha heart — calm, clear, and complete in its form and function in fullness (round and radiant). It is reflecting the Sun of truth and illuminating the earth in coolness and quietude. The Buddha heart comes from the Buddha-heart-seal of solid and serene sitting as seen in his statues. Sitting serves stopping Karma-kinetics (nirvana), settling in the Dharma-dhātu (domain, root), and savoring amrita, ambrosia or immortality — limitless light, liberation, life, and love. Ichi-en-sō (One round form, unified perfect form) expresses the full moon representing the wholly wholesome way and world of the Buddhas. Karmas create division, delusion, and desire in antagonism, alienation, and attachment, thus the Triple Poisons and the Triple maladies. As all are in karma-kinesis, the concrete countermeasures are to still and see them with the wholly wholesome way (Eightfold Holy Way, Sevenfold Awakening Way, etc.). So, sustained strenuous striving only serves for such a purpose. Only practice makes possible and perfect. Let’s practice constantly! 7/13/14 … Continue reading

Limitless Life, Liberation, Light and Love
Good morning! We have now a cool summer Sunday after our sittings. We had Independence Day on July 4. We will have Tanabata (七夕) on July 7, which celebrates the once a year meeting of Orihime (織姫, Weaver Girl, Vega) and Kengyū (牽牛, Cowboy, Altair) across Ama-no-gawa (天の川, Heaven River, Milky Way). Taking this opportune occasion, people express their wishes by writing on paper slips and hanging them on bamboo trees planted near the entrance to their houses (originally the wishes were to become skillful at weaving, then at any skill, and now anything). The Declaration of Independence proclaims people’s independence from a colonial power, asserting the rights of life, liberty, and the pursuit of happiness arbitrarily confiscated by feudal lords. Rights must accompany responsibilities, but often they are claimed arbitrarily, with disregard for the latter. Thus, they become limited, ego- centric life, liberty, and pursuit of happiness in the triple poisons of greed, anger, and delusion, resulting in a fight for the triple maladies of materialism, militarism, and mammonism. The triple poisons and maladies come from karmas. The fundamental solution lies in stopping karmas with the triple learnings of sīla (morality), samādhi (concentration), and prajñā (prognosis), and the holiness (wholly wholesomeness) of harmony, health, and happiness. Sitting and stopping karmas leads to samādhi, which embraces sīla and prajñā, enabling one to attain unconditioned peace (nirvana) and unsurpassed awakening (bodhi), and to settle in and serve for holy harmony, health, and happiness. We wish the Awakened Way of cultivation and verification of the triple learnings and holiness with amrita, ambrosia, immortality, not only on the day of Tanabata, but every day, everywhere, not only for us, but also for all. We weave with skillful means beautiful tapestries of all beings in limitless life, liberation, love, and light, not egoism, ego-nomy, and ego-logy, but eco-ism, eco-nomy, and eco-logy with holy truth, beauty, goodness, and peace, all the time, at all places. 7/6/14 … Continue reading

Still Sitting Scene
Good morning! We had a shower with thunder last night and could enjoy lush green gardens this morning. While we have been sitting, we could hear the rain rustling on leaves, starting with thunder and with a haze of rain following. We can now enjoy the fresh green wind going throughout the world of our still sitting. We call animals dō-butsu (moving things), plants and places sei-butsu (still things). Plants sit still thriving on earth, water, air, fire (sun), wind, and space (four or five elements). Buddhists added consciousness as the sixth element, which evolved through movements for food, shelter, and clothing, etc. Motor and sense organs have developed into perceptions, emotions, volitions, and conceptions called mind. The mind-body-world complex is inseparable, but conventionally separated as if independent entities, creating delusion, discrimination, destruction, etc., into mass extinction, and ecological extremes. Sitting stills karmas – movements and minds – and unifies into harmony, holiness, and happiness with calm, clear, clean conditions like trees in our wholly wholesome world of truth, peace, and purity, like a lake without turbulence and turbidity, with wind and waves stilled (nirvana) in amrita, ambrosia, immortality. Rain rustling on leaves Penetrating through sitting Solstice lush green! 6/22/14 Enjoy seibutsu and dō-butsu scenes (at … Continue reading
Clear Calm Complete Cosmos
Good evening! High in the sky we can see the bright beautiful moon. The clear calm full moon represents the Buddha heart/mind. It seems to appear only once a month, but it is always there, if we see it in the right way. Far in the sky we can see the brilliant bountiful sun. It goes around in the Milky Way Galaxy. The earth goes around the sun. The moon goes around the earth. Our life goes around them and farther in space and time. Please enjoy the clear calm complete moon and appreciate the timeless truth and harmony penetrating through and going around throughout the universe. Settle in sitting and see the clear calm complete cosmos beyond small sights. 1/14/14

Wholly Wholesome Way World
Good morning! This straight solid sitting (Shikan-taza: 只管打坐) makes the body still, the mouth silent, and the brain serene. This is the cultivation (bhāvanā: cause to become, shugyō: 修行) of karma-becoming (bhava) into Dharma-being (being in Dharma, Truth, Thusness: Tathatā, Tathā-gata: being Thusness). All beings are karma-heirs, karma-relatives, and karma-machines, but can stop karma in the straight solid sitting, sever bad karmas, and serve good karmas. Thus, we can change our haras (guts: digestive, nutritional, immune system, etc.), hearts (circulatory system), and heads (nervous system). Our mental and material worlds are intertwined and can be changed by our cultivation and culture. Thus, we can cultivate intellectual, emotional, and volitional realms and create culture of truth, beauty, and goodness to contemplate and become content with them – all interrelated. Civilization (urbanization for limited matter and power to fight) must be changed to culture (cultivation for limitless mind and life to share) to save all from the destruction of the wholly wholesome way world. Religion is to reunify sinful (=separated) sickness/suffering to holy harmony/happiness. A human adult has a hundred trillion cells, each of which contains a hundred trillion atoms, a hundred trillion bacteria or more in hara, and two hundred billion kilo meter total gene length (5 million rounds of the globe) – all working with water, wind, plants, animals, the moon, the sun, galaxies, etc. Thus, our life or whatever is not ours (“Not yours,” Na tumhākam,” the Buddha said) and is more like ocean rather than bubble, and more like space or “empty flower” rather than an iron ball. The “independent eternal ego” is the delusion to develop into desire and divisiveness – the threefold poison. The countermeasures for them are the threefold learning of sīla, samādhi, and prajñā. Sīla is pillar, backbones or morality. Samādhi is serenity, equanimity or concentration. Prajñā is prognosis, foresight or insight. These work on volitional, emotional, and intellectual realm respectively. (cf. mature, joyful, … Continue reading

Good morning! We have abundant beautiful flowers inside and out. I worked in my garden yesterday enjoying flowers blooming and fruits borne, birds and butterflies – even monarch butterflies. I was amazed at plants growing so fast and flourishing and new things – after more than two decades a hydrangea bloomed, which I thought only to enjoy its patterned leaves. An apple tree, though dwarf, is growing so big and now blooming and bearing fruit. An inch thick grape tree is now bearing fruit densely on a hundred square feet. This morning I got an email from Teibi, who planted a weeping cherry tree and is going to enjoy its blossoming. I have a weeping cherry here and at my house with other cherry trees. We missed cherry blossom viewing this spring, but maybe next year. Today’s Tricycle message was about the pursuit of happiness. It said that all want happiness but Buddhism tells about suffering so that we may know how to pursue happiness. We must not mistake true happiness from false. We have been reading Dogen’s Yūji (有時), Possessing Time. We must find the opportune time for the right purpose and good result, and make our careers wholly wholesome. So, Dogen recommended that we put our whole power in the Way Cycle of aspiration, cultivation, awakening, and unconditioned peace. Last time I talked about the paradigm shift from civilization to cultivation. Civilization is urbanization with city or citadel walls, discriminating inside and out. It is said, “Before civilization were forests. After civilization are no forests.” Civilization with its one-directional pyramidal system fights for limited matter and power, and thus forces the five calamities of delusion, bondage, discrimination, exploitation, and extermination. It can not thrive and survive going against the Dharma of Dependent Origination. Cultivation with its multi-dimensional Indra- net system shares a culture of limitless heart and life in truth, goodness, and beauty; and thus strives for the fivefold bliss of awakening, freedom, equality, love, and peace. Now we must see what kind and what way we are pursuing happiness. True happiness is not in the quantity of matter and power; and much less in selfish, sinful, fighting for them; but in quality of truth, goodness, and beauty – much more in selfless, holy (wholly wholesome) sharing of them. The more and harder we seek and struggle for matter and power, the severer and stronger we stray and suffer. The harder and more we strive and share in heart and life, the healthier and happier we enjoy and enjoin with all always. … Continue reading
