Coming Home, Day 9
In Emmersdorf, I met my high school friend Heidi. It was pure coincidence. She took part in the village festival of the 1st of May celebration. At this festival, a May tree was erected on the village square by the local fire department. The local wind ensemble (Blasmusik) was playing folks music. The women of the village wore the traditional Dirndl, which is the national costume of the area. In the past, young men tried to climb up the slippery barkless tree in order to touch the wreath and win a prize. Fire departments and the Blasmusik (like marching band in the US) are community building institutions. Nearly all young men are part of at least of one of these groups. Women also join now and even children are admitted. Firemen erecting the May Tree Blasmusik with French horn Heidi hiked with me to the city of Melk, where we met her friend Andrea. In the monastery garden, Andrea created an herb garden according to the writings of the medieval herbalist Walahfrid Strabo. She explained the garden to us. The monastery in Melk is famous for its incredible library, the imperial rooms and the church. Heidi and myself Benedictine Abbey of Melk The herb garden consisted of 22 little sections, each with its own theme. In former … Continue reading

Coming Home, Day 8
When leaving Aggsbach Markt, Mrs. Theresia Frischauf looked out of her window and started to chat with me. Soon another woman stopped on her way to the grocery store. They were full of stories from the past. Aggsbach Markt village with a Gothic church tower in the background The path led me up to the forests and meadows and away from the Danube. Spring flowers surrounded me. Since the beginning of my hike, the cuckoo bird was my constant companion. Meadow with dandelions, blooming cherry trees Cock and two chicken and blooming sloes (Schlehen) behind the wood stack Blooming apple tree Violets Before I entered the village of Emmersdorf, the view opened to the Danube, the Benedictine monastery of Melk and the castle of Emmersdorf. Coming Home, Day 7
The area around Maria Laach is farmland and especially used for cultivating Christmas trees. Winters are cold and even in the summer, nights stay cool – a good condition for growing fir trees. The meadows in the summer are often covered with gorgeous flowers. Here, life has a slower pace than in the valley. Village street of Litzendorf In the village of Litzendorf, I recognized the farmhouse of the organic farmer who delivers his products to Krems and also to my sisters. Unfortunately, he was not at home. But his mother-in-law arrived on her bike. We had a nice conversation. Before I left, I visited the goats and geese. Each goat looked like a queen. They are well treated here. The geese had an important meeting. I wondered what they were discussing. Organic Farm Gwschendinger In the afternoon, I arrived in Aggsbach Markt, a village in the Danube valley. I still had time to visit the neighbouring village of Willendorf. Here, the famous Venus of Willendorf was found, a fertility statue dating back 26,000 years. The original statue is only 4.3 inches tall. Replica of the Venus of Willendorf Text and pictures by … Continue reading

Coming Home, Day 6
Through dense forests and over creeks and meadows, the path brought me up to the top of the Jauerling, the highest mountain of the Wachau. It is 3000 feet high. The trees just showed tiny green tops. It was still early spring here. Past storms had uprooted sections of the forest; big trucks tires had dug deep grooves in the wet soil. The area reminded me of a war zone. It was good to get out of that place. Old barn with blossoming cherry trees Granite rock, moss and trail marker View to the Danube valley from the Jauerling Dry thistle in the grass I stayed overnight in Maria Laach. The village is famous for its pilgrimage church. This church is a jewel of art and architecture. I liked the unusual and humorous little details of the art objects. In one of the goethic altar pieces, Mary is holding a rosary in her hand. Her hand has six fingers. On the main altar, Jesus is keeping a firm hold on a poppy seed pacifier. It was common in this area to calm down babies with poppy seeds. On one marble sarcophagus, a person peeks out from behind a curtain. I spent hours in this church, just looking and observing. Coming Home, Day 5
At the foot of the 1000 Eimer Berg (1000 bucket mountain), I entered the cemetery of Spitz. In good years, it was said that 1000 buckets of grapes could be harvested from the vineyards on this mountain. The entrance tower to the cemetery was once a Protestant chapel destroyed by the Catholic forces. Each grave has a little flower garden. It was nice to walk from grave to grave – a feast of colors and smells. I recognized many names on the crosses and gravestones. Pastorenturn (tower of the pastor) and cemetery For hours, I walked through vineyards and little villages. Green lizards seem to like the place, they are everywhere. Spitzer Graben, vineyard terraces Stone wall with blooming peach tree Green lizard and dry oak leaves cowslip (Himmelschlüssel) In the evening, I approached the village of Mühldorf with the castle Oberranna. I was looking forward to meeting my long-term friend, Lydia, who owns this castle, now a hotel. Her husband and she renovated this place with a lot of love and knowledge. … Continue reading

Coming Home, Day 4
The path winds through vineyards, grass land areas and forests and provided gorgeous views down to the Danube valley. Castles, rocks and churches tell stories of the past; legends of robbing knights and stories about deals with the devil came into my mind. Path with cherry tree St. Michel‘s mountain with Danube St. Michel‘s church Through the Red Door (Rotes Tor) I entered into the former city area of Spitz. The Red Door was part of a fortification wall surrounding Spitz. The name Red refers to a fierce battle against the Swedish forces in the 30 Years‘ war. At one time, Spitz was a center of Protestant religion. It was crushed by the Catholic forces in the time of the Counterreformation. Also in my family, the two religious forces met. One family branch was serious Protestant, the other one was Catholic. My grandmother was raised in a strict Catholic boarding school, but she became an atheist. At the time when I was a child, religion was not important any more in our family. … Continue reading

Coming Home, Day 3
When I left Dürnstein, the sound of church bells filled the valley. Each church bell in the villages sounds differently, yet they are tuned to each other. From the bakery, the smell of fresh bread surrounded me. This bread is famous in the valley and is called Wachauer Laberl. On the stone walls of the hundreds of years old terraces, plants grow under difficult conditions. These plants are survivors. I had forgotten how much I loved this vegetation. The stone walls are home for many animals. One of them is the green lizard. In German, it is called a Smaragdeidechse. The best wine of the Wachau is named after it. Green lizard (Emerald lizard is the German translation) Because of the difficult access to the terraces and the tiny fields, all of the work in the vineyards has to be done by hand. As a child, I worked in the vineyards too. Every season, work has to be done. Even in winter, the farmer has little rest. At this time, the vines have to be cut. In the evening, I arrived at the city of Weißenkirchen. Succulent with mullein Field worker with handspray Field worker with handspray Gothic church of Weißenkirchen In Weißenkirchen, I visited the Raffelsbergerhof, once the home of a Schiffsmeister (shipowner). A Schiffsmeister had the right to own ships on the Danube. My ancestors were also Schiffsmeisters. Before the steam motor was invented, these ships were barges which had to be pulled upstream by horses. Until the 19th century, there existed a law that those who wanted to work on a barge were not allowed to know how to swim. In case of a shipwreck, everybody would try to save the barge at all cost. Barges were more worth than human life. In the 18th century, this lead to a disaster for my family and the village I am from. Two of my male ancestors and half of the men of the village drowned in the Danube. … Continue reading

Coming Home, Day 2
The trek took me through the historic town of Krems, the beginning of the Wachau area. In Krems, I went to High School. Medieval churches and buildings, baroque houses, tiny, winding, cobblestone streets, steep stony stairways; all these things welcomed me after forty years of absence. Street in Krems Town of Stein, View through a medieval gate to the Frauenbergkirche (Women‘s mountain church) At the piety column (an Austrian name for that is Marterl, which comes from Martyrium) I rested and looked back to my home village, the Göttweig monastery, the city of Mautern and its iron bridge.
