Coming Home, Day 6
Through dense forests and over creeks and meadows, the path brought me up to the top of the Jauerling, the highest mountain of the Wachau. It is 3000 feet high. The trees just showed tiny green tops. It was still early spring here. Past storms had uprooted sections of the forest; big trucks tires had dug deep grooves in the wet soil. The area reminded me of a war zone. It was good to get out of that place. Old barn with blossoming cherry trees Granite rock, moss and trail marker View to the Danube valley from the Jauerling Dry thistle in the grass I stayed overnight in Maria Laach. The village is famous for its pilgrimage church. This church is a jewel of art and architecture. I liked the unusual and humorous little details of the art objects. In one of the goethic altar pieces, Mary is holding a rosary in her hand. Her hand has six fingers. On the main altar, Jesus is keeping a firm hold on a poppy seed pacifier. It was common in this area to calm down babies with poppy seeds. On one marble sarcophagus, a person peeks out from behind a curtain. I spent hours in this church, just looking and observing. Mary as Queen of Heaven with Jesus holding a poppy seed pacifier, part of a tryptich, 15th century Detail of a marble sarcophagus Text and … Continue reading

Coming Home, Day 5
At the foot of the 1000 Eimer Berg (1000 bucket mountain), I entered the cemetery of Spitz. In good years, it was said that 1000 buckets of grapes could be harvested from the vineyards on this mountain. The entrance tower to the cemetery was once a Protestant chapel destroyed by the Catholic forces. Each grave has a little flower garden. It was nice to walk from grave to grave – a feast of colors and smells. I recognized many names on the crosses and gravestones. Pastorenturn (tower of the pastor) and cemetery For hours, I walked through vineyards and little villages. Green lizards seem to like the place, they are everywhere. Spitzer Graben, vineyard terraces Stone wall with blooming peach tree Green lizard and dry oak leaves cowslip (Himmelschlüssel) In the evening, I approached the village of Mühldorf with the castle Oberranna. I was looking forward to meeting my long-term friend, Lydia, who owns this castle, now a hotel. Her husband and she renovated this place with a lot of love and knowledge. … Continue reading

Coming Home, Day 4
The path winds through vineyards, grass land areas and forests and provided gorgeous views down to the Danube valley. Castles, rocks and churches tell stories of the past; legends of robbing knights and stories about deals with the devil came into my mind. Path with cherry tree St. Michel‘s mountain with Danube St. Michel‘s church Through the Red Door (Rotes Tor) I entered into the former city area of Spitz. The Red Door was part of a fortification wall surrounding Spitz. The name Red refers to a fierce battle against the Swedish forces in the 30 Years‘ war. At one time, Spitz was a center of Protestant religion. It was crushed by the Catholic forces in the time of the Counterreformation. Also in my family, the two religious forces met. One family branch was serious Protestant, the other one was Catholic. My grandmother was raised in a strict Catholic boarding school, but she became an atheist. At the time when I was a child, religion was not important any more in our family. … Continue reading

Holy Harmony Health Happiness
Good morning! Did you see the bright full moon last night and the brilliant beautiful sun this morning in the great glimmering sky? Great, you saw and enjoyed them! We can now enjoy abundant flowers all around us, window-sides and world-wide. Happiness is here now, with them and us, especially after our solid, serene sittings. We can enjoy them in nature, sow seeds, or grow them, but all originally from nature. Carl Busse (1872-1918) made a poem titled “Over the Mountains:” Over the mountains, Far to wander, people say, Lives the Happiness. Aah, so I went, In the swarms of others, Came back with cried out eyes. Over the mountains, Far, far away over there, people say, Lives the Happiness. Everyone wants happiness, but it is rare for us to get happiness. Usually we seek happiness far far away. So, we wander and stray into foreign and others’ realms. Thus, we come back with tearful eyes. We seldom find the true treasures. If happiness is far out somewhere else than where we are now, we will never get it. Even if we get it, we must lose it, if it is outside of us. Because we wander around in the dusty dangerous swarms of others seeking the Happiness, we must come back with swollen eyes weeping, believing in people’s hearsays. It is like moles’ mud-meddling in mundane matters, maladies, and miseries seeking matter, might, and me from the triple poisons of craving, anger, and delusion, only falling into sinkholes. Mundane matters are materialism, militarism, and me-ism epitomized in money- ism, murder-ism, and mole-ism. Economics, politics, and egoistic are piling up a pyramid pointing to the planetary perishing. Politics, either plutocracy or democracy, paves the path to mobocracy by mole-ism, with the triple poisons, driven by karma kinetics. … Continue reading

Straight, Strong, Balanced or Slant Sideways, Unbalanced
Good evening! The bell, the bell ringer, and the bell listeners are all different according to different conditions. So are the heavy snow, trees, and snow damage. I had two peach trees damaged by the recent heavy snow due to the different states of the trees, their covering nets, and covering snow. One tree was broken at the trunk, the other fell down, lifting its roots. The latter was pulled back to survive, but the former is difficult to revive. The surviving one had grown straight, strong and balanced, but the other was slanting sideways and unbalanced due to the neighboring trees. We must see our karmas, individual, social, and environmental, to grow straight, strong, and balanced, unaffected by them, inside and out. This sitting is to see all karmas and settle in holy (wholly wholesome) health and happiness in unconditioned peace and unsurpassed awakening. 4/4/13 NG wall paper, Michael S. Witness Wonderful Way and World
Good morning! On the way here I listened to NPR, which talked about solitude and separation and how to solve such problems and advised to pick up phone calls and meet friends. When we pick up phone calls, often they are robocalls. We may meet friends and make more foes. Essentially our small separated selves make small separated worlds. So, we need to stop it by solid serene sitting and sustained steadfast sesshin. Then, we wake up and witness the wonderful way and world, worthwhile having been born as humans. We can enjoy limitless, beautiful world, tasting awakening and amrita, ambrosia of immortality. Thus, we can find and foster the holy home and host. 3/26/13

Holy Host Home
Good evening! The equinox is called higan (彼岸), the other shore, and it is compared to equanimity, nirvana, holy oneness. In the holy oneness, all things are one – our minds and worlds, holy host and home, the triple magnanimous, mature, and mudita (joyful) minds, and their holy truth, goodness, and beauty. So, the truth of the equinox spring sphere has melted even the heavy spring snow greatly and quickly. The goodness of the Bodhisattva’s beneficial mind has made a passage through the still lingering snow. The beauty of the incense burner ash has arisen joy and even beatitude. The holy host and home come from the Bodhisattva way – host and guest in holy oneness, unlike emperor and minister, much less master and slave, separated. They became the cultivation and verification of the culture of all the “ways” (dō: 道) – tea way, garden way, calligraphy way, etc. The tea way’s four mottoes of harmony, respect, purity, and serenity (wa-kei-sei-jaku: 和敬清寂) come from the Bodhisattvas’ Brahma-vihāra, or limitlessness of friendship, compassion, joy, and equanimity – the exquisite mind of nirvana storing the right dharma eye (shōbōgenzō-nehanmyōshin: 正法眼蔵涅槃妙心). This solid and serene sitting and sustained steadfast sesshin are the cultivation and verification of holy host and home, actualizing and appreciating unconditioned peace and unsurpassed awakening, like the spring sphere meeting and melting spring snow for free and full function. 3/25/13 Homey Holy Host Home, picture taken by Erin when snowflakes started … Continue reading

Clear Calm Cosmos
Good morning! While most houses are dark or with dreamings, we can see the earlier dawning with the clear crescent moon and calm cloudless sky above, and scurrying bunnies and singing birds below. The Buddha was awakened to the dawning morning star with all living beings with lands, mountains, rivers, trees, and grass in one clear calm cosmos in limitless liberation life, and free full function. 3/8/13
